(new to character optimization)

I was wondering if there are not already threads on this, how you all would make a character that had the most fantastic and useful familiars possible? Would you go with wizard or hexblade, or sor 1 bbn 19 for the hp?

The familiar need not be optimized for combat, merely optimized for any task or for vesatility.

I had two that were pretty good.

Spell Stitched, Stitched Flesh Bat.
Could cast Summon Undead 1, Fire Ball, and vampiric touch 1 time a day each. Darkness and Web 2 times a day, and Negative energy ray 3 times a day. Was undead, flew, had blind sense, and added 4 hd of undead to my Necromancers control limit.

That summon Undead 1, would allow it to summon a human skeleton. So in effect, it could use it not only to attack, but as a pair of hands to manipulate things and carry things for it. With it's blindsense, he could cast darkness and not be effected. Lastly, he could heal himself with vampiric touch, and heal other undead with Negative energy ray.

Also;

Abberent Toad
I had a Fleshwarper with a toad familiar. Then added on wings, 25% to resist crits, Chitin armor, a dispelling eye, and a set of Beholder eye stalks.

The best familar would be probably be something like a Wiz3/Druid3/Beastmaster1/Mystic Theurge3/Arcane hierophant 10 with a Nature's bond feat.

Go go level 16 animal companion/13 familar combined animal thing.

A Bard/Marshal focused on Use Magic Device with a Coure Eladrin familiar would be pretty decent; your familiar gets your skill ranks so the coure could use all sorts of wands or scrolls as long as you were using the Motivate Charisma aura.

If you're looking for an easy answer, I would recommend taking the Improved Familiar feat. That allows you a blink dog, a hippogrif ... etc.

Those are substanial creatures to begin with.

Then with some spells selected to focus on the familiar ... (especially some touch spells) ... your familiar would be combat ready.

Otherwise hit up a druid and awaken your animal companion at some point.

I currently play a great grey eld abjurer, with an animated spellboom for his familiar. It is a tiny animated object from MM1, whuch means that it has a fly speed of 20, a slam attack that will make most filthy peasants think twice about grabbing my shiny book! It also have a hardness of 8 and a natural +1 enchantment bonus to attack because its cover and slipcase is made from adamantium, and it is imbued with the waterproof, pungent and major energy resistance. An expensive but worthwile familiar, and the sheer coolness of having a living spellbook as a familiar makes it all worthwile for me.

Currently playing a Draconic Necropolitan Kobold Dread Necromancer at 10th level; maxed ranks in Disguise, max'd charisma, and took a Quasit familiar that can change forms into a Wolf and a Bat. I'm disguised as a gnome.

So I look like a Gnome Druid with a Wolf companion, but actually am an undead necromancer with a demonic familiar.

I might make him spell-stiched later, if I can find room for the feat: it sure sounds flavorful, and after Corpsecrafter and a few others, it would be powerful too.

I totally support getting an Imp or Quasit for the poly aspects.

I second this motion. The ability to UMD is fantastic, essentially giving you an extra action each turn. An Eldrtich Disciple with a coure familiar and DMMP can be downright nasty. Can you say shared persistent Holy Star?
