Bag of Rats: Empathic Transfer, Hostile [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-17-05, 03:17 PM Arguments for or against using Empathic Transfer, Hostile on a bag of rats?

RAW seems to say nothing prevents it, and I'm considering having a bag of them, or possibly some more easily contained creature, around for individual Hostile Empathic Transfers anyway.

05-17-05, 03:40 PM There is some debate over exactly how the mass version of Empathic Transfer, Hostile works. I don't have a link, but there was a thread discussing it on the psionics board. You could certainly keep around a bunch of rats to use to heal yourself, but the power won't take you over full hit points, regardless of which interpretation you use. So I don't see that it's terribly game breaking to do so.

What's not obvious is if you could keep a bag of them around, and then when you've lost like 300 hit points, hit them all with the Mass version to heal yourself up to full.

Hence why I mentioned the thread where it was debated whether the spell does/heals a maximum of 50 hit points, spread among all targets, or 50 to/from each target? Etc, etc.

05-17-05, 03:54 PM i dont know......having a bag of rats would allow you to heal yourself far away from the action....and if you touch 1 rat and transfer 50+ hp of damage......the rat dies(-50hp...now a pile of dust) and you are healed...sounds like what he means...that way you do not run the risk of reinjury and getting into melee

05-17-05, 04:01 PM I dont know psionics,but since i love Death Knell, and i want to use bestow wound,healing sting,consumptive feild,power leach and other such spells to their fullest, i have considered what would be the right creature for such a tactic.
I came up with snakes.A tiny non venomous snake needs little food, can be kept in a leather sack, is fairly easy to come by, and is fairly clean, compared to rats and chickens.

But it's questionable whether you can transfer enough damage to a creature to take it below -10. It's also questionable if you can "damage" them for more hit point damage than you've actually taken, if you are using it offensively instead of on your bag of rats.

And then there are the questions of exactly how the Mass form works. Is the total amount transferred limited to 50, or is it 50 per target? Can you do more damage than the total hit point damage you've taken? Or is it instead limited by the amount of damage you've taken per target? Etc, etc.

There was a thread discussing all of this, and I wish I had a link to it. I don't think there was a general consensus reached in that thread either, though.

The "or lower" clause would suggest you can have -354,168,651,732,168 HP after the Hulking Hurler hit you.

I initially meant would it be fair to use the 20' spread version on a bag of rats to massively heal yourself.

Whether or not that's too cheesy (we'll see how much I need it) I'm going to use it on individual creatures anyway, most likely through a Command Word Summon Nature's Ally I item.
