| Xenu02-12-06, 07:34 PM | In my last campaign, I wanted to play a Wizard/Sorcerer. But the DM said it was a bad idea, because I wouldn't get the really good spells that way. And he was right. So, next time I won't go for the good spells. Lets play a melee char insead, but a melee char that can Enlarge himself, cast True Strike, and maybe even Alter Self. And some other stuff like that. I plan to play a human or halfelf, my highest class will always be favored one. At level 8 I would be: Barbarian 2 / Wizard 2 / Sorcerer 2 / Fighter 2. So, I would have a BAB of 6, two lower then a standard fighter/barbarian. In return I would have two sets of first and second level spells. Both the sorcerers higher number of spells per days and flexibility and the wizards ability to learn all spells there is to know. So. What do you think of this concept? What feats and spells would you reccomend? Is there any WotC feat that let multiclass wizards cast spells with no penalty while wearing armor? (I do have one in a Scarred Lands book, but that's a external publisher.) What is the penalty anyway, and where can I find it? (Failin to find it in PHB at this time.) And then there's the progression past level 8. I plan to move on as a fighter. But maybe also take one more level of wizard, so I get Alter Self and such. Maybe even take two more levels of sorcerer and one more level of barbarian. Losing one or two more points of BAB would suck a bit, but the extra power would be nice. Any thoughts on this? |

You will be unable to wear armor if you want to cast your spells, ensuring that you WILL take damage. 3. Your character, as written, will have fair Fortitude and Will saves, and a nonexistent Reflex save. At level 8, your Ref save base will still be +0. 4. Your spellcasting will be extremely minor, and will in no way make up for the BAB lag, lack of armor, and hit point deficit. Fighting spellcasters (colloquially called "Gishes" on this board, though it's a misnomer,) are generally less powerful than pure spellcasters no matter what. A poorly built one is virtually useless. |
| GaffeR02-12-06, 07:42 PM | That level 8 build is.. bad. Really bad. BUT YOU ARE IN LUCK! We have numerous warrior-mage (or gish) threads around here! All for the low, low price of one click! (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=150451) The problems with your build are as follows: Low level spells Inability to cast while raging Low saves Low BAB What books are allowed? You can make a pretty damn good gish with just the complete warrior. Throw on some mithral armor and go to town! One of the most basic versions is the following: Fighter 2/Wizard 4/Spellsword 5/Eldritch Knight 9 (BAB 18, CL 15, reduced arcane spell failure, channel spell) or for a bit more on the spell side... Fighter 1/Wizard 6/Spellsword 3/Eldritch Knight 10 (BAB 17, CL 17, reduced ASF) Spellsword 3 + Mithral breastplate = 0% Arcane spell failure |
| AramilWindwalker02-12-06, 07:44 PM | you should probably either focus on sorceror or wizard, but since you want alot of the same spells over and over, I'd recommend sorceror, and fighter, then leaping into eldritch knight or spellsword, ask your dm about the battle sorceror variant in unearthed arcana, it has slightly lower spells/day and known, but can cast in light armor, has better hit points, and 3/4 bab, dragon disciple may also be worth looking at with your concept. |
