Barbarian/spell caster [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-13-04, 02:29 PM So I want to basicaly make a Fighter/spellcaster that uses a big axe of some sort (would also double as his "Staff" ) And using spells to enhance his fighting ability. IE buff Str, Dex, Con, enlarge person, that sort of thing

So I was thinking Sorcerer for the spontanious spell casting but then again it wouldn't be as versitile as Sorcerer, I haven't really looked at cleric but that might be a possibility as well.

I am using only the PHB, DMG, CW (I can't argue for gehstalt or BoED)

Any builds that you would recomend over another for this sort of character?

Level 16-17 will be the max this character will reach.

Huh? Do you mean Sorcerer wouldn't be as versitile as Wizard? I think Sorcerer would fit the theme better. Try Rage Mage. Essentially its a Barbarian spellcaster. It's got 1/2 caster progression, but that's ok cause it's got decent HD and cool spell rage abilities. Plus your high CHA will come in handy for cool skills like intimidate and bluff as a class skill from Sorcerer could open up Feinting as a combat option. Just a thought.

11-13-04, 03:03 PM Sorcerer is a dangerous choice for a barbarian, because Cha is usually irrelevant. Wizards are better for buffing then sorcs as well, because they can prepare a large number of different long-duration buffs, while a sorcerer is stuck with knowing only a few.

The two logical paths I can see are Barbarian 1/Wizard/Eldritch knight or a sorcerer build that takes advantage of Cha-synergy abilities (3.0 Holy liberator-type things.).

Remember that you can't cast spells while raging.

11-13-04, 04:49 PM I wouldn't go more than 2 levels of rage mage because I think the abilities don't make up for the CL loss.

A decent build for this off the top of my head is barbarian2/sorcerer4/ragemage2/eldricthknightx. Some feats to take with this are arcane strike, improved toughness, extra rage, power attack, and improved initative.

A cleric like you mentioned is good too, I'd go for a cleric of Kord with luck and strength domains.
