Ok I'm playing A Bard and my DM says that the new 3.5 rules don't allow me to use my +4 Bardic knowledge on any of my knowledge rolls. He says that only applys to know a person or location.
Then he says that the song and silence book does not apply to the new 3.5 rules.
And also the bard is not a jack of all trades.

Can you guys out there give me some ammo and some real knowledge on the situation.
I'm new to the 3rd edition

What bardic knowledge can be applied to is left vague in the rules. It mentions a bit about knowing famous people, places and things. Then it gives some examples. It is not clear, or perhaps deliberately left to the DM, how bardic knowledge applies to knowledge checks. So, if your DM wants to be strict about this, then you are stuck.

As for the "jack of all trades" bit. That is pretty much subjective. Bards are generally described to be like that, since they have combat, stealth, diplomacy and magic skills. I can't imagine an argument over this subject. Bards are versatile, but that can't be used to argue that bards should have ability x or skill y.

Song and Silence is indeed a 3.0 rulebook and is generally superceded by other rules. Fortunately (or unfortunately for your pocketbook) most of the content of S&S can be found in the Complete Adventurer/Arcane/Warrior/Divine set of books.

Um... My first RPGA Living Greyhawk Judge said that Bardic Knowledge was like "Knowledge (all)" And it is sort of fair. Bardic Knowledge is Bard Level + Int. Knowledge Skills are normally Level +3 +Int. So it is like having DC's 3 higher (until you get Knowledge -Local- 5 ranks for the +2 synergy).

Every level not of Bard (or Lore Master/similiar class) is 1 less pip for your Bardic Knowledge ability so it works out.
