| Cyraen04-26-06, 02:12 AM | Hey everyone! I'm trying to build a Kalashtar Elocator, but I'm having a really hard time deciding on what class(es) to use to get there. The basis will be on emphasizing the Elocator's abilities (I wish I could get it as a base class! lol). I was thinking, after much researching, that I would focus the build into a harrier and battlefield control with a reach weapon (I've been thinking glaive). So I do plan to be very combat-orientated. I also want to try and keep the psionic feel of the character because that will really be the only thing keeping Books that can be used are all core, XPH, the Complete series, the Races books and any Eberron books. Any suggestions outside those should be noted so I could show my DM. Also the Soulknife fix by BlaineTog and the Elocator adjustment for Soulknives has also been approved. Also want to thanks the people on the Psionics board for explaining the Elocator to me. Thanks in advance for the help. |

On the other hand you could also try psychic warrior, which grants a crap-load more feats and has great psionic powers to choose from. I'd personally go for psychic warrior. Those feats are invaluable, and their power list has all the good combat/battle control powers you'd ever want. |
| LogicNinja04-26-06, 03:33 AM | Elocater is a great mobility-focused class. The problem is, mobility on its own just isn't that great. You need to be able to do something with your mobility. Monk/PsyWar and Scout/PsyWar or /Psion make for a good entry into Elocator. You also need to decide how much Elocator to take. The first level is great--"Scorn Earth" is a sweet ability with a cool name, and you get it at 1st. It lets you float a foot above the ground, at your normal speed, constantly, which can be handy, and is very stylish--and it also lets you levitate at 10ft speed (who needs Slow Fall). You also gain a level of manifesting here. You lose manifester levels at 2nd, 5th, and 8th. At 2nd, 5th, and 8th, you get "Opportunistic Strike", which gives +2, 4, and then 6 AB/damage against an opponent who has been hit since your last action on your first attack against them. Since it's only one attack, that's not that great, but it can help compensate for low AB. 3rd gets you Dimension Step, which is Dim. Door 1/day for free. This isn't that great, although if you combine Monk with Elocator, you can take the Sun School tactical feat to take advantage of this. 4th gets you Flanker, which means that you choose which square counts as "the square you need to stand in to flank with Buddy X". This IS useful, for sneak attackers (psychic rogue, or rogue/psion types). 6th gets you Psi. Telepor and Psi. Planeshift as third-level powers, which is okay. 7th is the best level of the Elocator--you get a second five-foot step! With a Scout that means you can take two 5-foot steps and get Skirmish damage on a full attack (moved 10')! 9th lets you use Spring Attack with your Dimension Step--Dim. Door over, make an attack, and end back where you were. Hitting someone in the face from 400 feet away is nice... but it's once/day, and one hit won't do all that much. At 10th, you get, essentially, 5 rounds of haste/day. 1st, 4th, and 7th are IMO the ideal exit points of the Elocator--8th if you're not using Partial BAB and want to be a fighter type instead of 7th. The reason Kalashtar is nice for this build is their extra power points--that's *very* helpful for psychic warriors, say. So here's a couple of ideas: Scout12/PsyWar or Psion 1/Elocator 7. Without partial BAB, this would mean a BAB of 14; with, BAB 15. You get two 5-foot steps/round, manifest as a 6th level PsyWar or Psion (use Practiced Manifester to get to augment powers better). Scout11/PsyWar1/Monk1/Elocator 7 will lose another point of BAB (again, unless you're using partial BAB, which you SHOULD be ) and a Scout bonus feat, but will get his wisdom bonus to AC--good synergy with the Psychic Warrior. So! Kalashtar 1 - Scout 1: Dodge, Skirmish +1d6 2 - Scout 2: Uncanny Dodge 3 - Scout 3: Weapon Finesse (use a bow 'til then) Skirmish +1 AC 4 - Scout 4: Bonus feat - Mobility 5 - Scout 5: Skirmish +2d6, Evasion 6 - Scout 6: Spring Attack 7 - Scout 7: Skirmish (+2d6, +2 AC) 8 - Scout 8: Bonus Feat: Combat Expertise 9 - Psychic Warrior 1: Elusive Target, Bonus feat - Two-Weapon Fighting 10 - Elocater 1: Scorn Earth, Sidestep Charge 11 - Elocater 2: Dual Strike (lets you attack once with each weapons with a standard action) 12 - Elocater 3: Dimension step 13 - Elocater 4: Flanker 14 - Elocater 5: Dual Strike or Elusive Target (whichever you don't have) 15 - Elocater 6: Improved Disarm (synergy with Opportunistic Strike) 16 - Elocater 7: Capricious Step 17 - Elocater 8: Opportunistic Strike +6 18 - Scout 9: Skirmish +3d6, Improved TWF 19 - Scout 10: Blindsense 30ft 20 - Scout 11: Movement +20, Skirmish +3AC That's not exactly optimized (I'm sure there are better feat choices) but it's a solid start. |
| hogarth04-26-06, 07:12 AM | How about Ranger 1/Fighter 2/Psion 2/War Mind 5/Elocater 8/Exotic Weapon Master 2? Ranger 1: Track, Dodge (Concentration 4, Know: Psionics 2, Know: History 2) Fighter 1: Mobility Psion (Egoist) 1: Psion (Egoist) 2: Fighter 2: Spring Attack War Mind 1-5: Exotic Weapon Master 1-2: Elocater 1-8: Not necessarily in that order -- you can take War Mind 1 and then 8 levels of Elocater and then the rest in case you want the Elocater goodies first. |
| LogicNinja04-26-06, 07:32 AM | Wow, that gave me a great build idea for a scout. |
| Cyraen04-26-06, 08:09 PM | Thanks for everything so far. One question though: what book is the Monk Sun School located in? |
| LogicNinja04-26-06, 08:11 PM | Sun School is in Complete Warrior. It's not great, but can be okay for Monk/PsyWar based Elocators. |
| LogicNinja04-26-06, 08:15 PM | http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=628420 I got an idea from this post--check that link out. It's my "Floating War Scout", a better build than the straight-up Scout11/Elocator8/PsyWar 1. |
| Cyraen04-27-06, 01:04 AM | Wow, you did a really great job on that. I know it might not be optimal, but I think I might work in BlaineTog's Soulknife fix instead of using Scout just to keep more of a psionic feel and convince my DM that Elocator also increases Mind Blade enhancement... it may not be as very good, but I think it sounds like fun and that's what really matters. :) But any other recommendations are still welcome. I'd love to hear them! EDIT: I'm trying to find it somewhere, but I don't understand quite what partial BAB means. Can someone explain it? |
| AngelLemmingThief04-27-06, 05:22 AM | Fractional BAB is from Unearthed Arcana. Basically you add up all the BABs from your classes before you round down rather than after. CL = character level Good BAB = CL Medium BAB = 3/4 CL Poor BAB = 1/2 CL Say a Wizard 3/Druid 3/Bard 6 under usual rules would have something like +7 BAB. With fractional they'd have (3*1/2 + 3 * 3/4 + 6 * 3/4) = 1.5 + 6.75 = 8.25, rounded down to +8. That way someone who multi-classed between 20 Poor BAB classes would end up with 10 BAB rather than 0 :) |

Thanks. :) Soulknife is *really* not optimal with Elocater, though--in fact, it's not optimal in general. :\ Soulknife is mediocre when you take all 20 levels (or 16S/4Fighter, etc), and if you only take a few, your mind blade will be really bad and unenhanced. You have to look at what you want from the Elocater. The class gives mobility, flanking ability, an extra 5' step at 7th... it's a very fun, very cool class, but it's frankly not that great because *mobility* isn't that great on its own. You need something to do with the mobility. The reason I used Scout is because Skirmish is a mobility-based ability. Rogue/Psion or Psychic Rogue-based Elocater builds might stop at 4th for Flanker and focus on sneak attack. If you want a soulknife and can qualify for Elocater, consider just *one* level of it: after all, that gets you Scorn Earth (whee, FLOATING!), Sidestep Charge, *and* a manifester level increase. This gives you pretty much all of Elocater's flavor (a floating mobile guy) without hampering you. You need to do something with the Elocater's mobility, or it's just not worth it. For a soulknife, I'd recommend the following builds--use Zen Archery, and focus on raising wisdom, as it'll apply to AB, AC, and damage with mind arrows (as RAW--don't know the BlaineTog fix): Soulknife5/Monk2/Soulbow 10/Soulknife +3, or Soulknife5/Monk2/Soulbow 4/Kensai 9 (to increase your mind arrow abilities). |
| Cyraen04-27-06, 02:42 PM | I suppose you're right. My main conundrum is trying to find something that will make my character unique in my very large group (and with starting at level 1, that's much harder to accomplish). We've got everything needed, 'cept a tank. I was trying to keep a psychic feel because that is what's missing so far from our group/campaign (since it is set in Eberron, psionics is appropriate). This is why, although your build sounds great, it doesn't sound like it would really do much for me in the low levels or keep that feel (if only there was a psychic scout!). I was also going for something melee based because I always played a caster/manifester before this, maybe a psigish would be more appropriate? At this point, I might just go Monk/Fist of Zuoken as the answer to my question. I orignally was trying to go Elocator just because it sounded different and all the mobility made it a bit unique with the rest of the group (when you have a bard, ranger, sorceror, fighter, swashbuckler, cleric and rogue, there isn't much left). So thanks for everything so far, its given me some real food for thought. |
| lears_fool04-27-06, 05:03 PM | One other thought is the Ardent from the Complete Psi They're basically a better armored/armed psion with a more limited power list (based on 'mantles', kind of like priest domains) However, a couple of those mantles are excellent with the elocator, including the freedom and time mantles. Ardent's also my favorite for my 'gatling gun' build (ardent/scout/highland stalker/master thrower build) (16 ranged attacks for 1d4+3d6 damage around isn't anything to frown at, especially from a character who can easily move 20' around while getting all 16 (dimension hop rules)). Two others to consider are Warmind and Psionic Fist, both of which actually get quite good power for ten manifester levels, almost equal to the Ardent/Wilder/Psion and far above what a Psychic Warrior gets. In fact, you can get more manifesting power from ten manifesting levels of Warmind/Psionic Fist than you can get from FIFTEEN levels of psychic warrior. |
| LogicNinja04-27-06, 06:41 PM | If you want a unique psionic tank, an Ardent/Slayer gish could be right up your alley, yes. |

I'm intrigued by it. Also, where is Psionic Fist (the class)? What kind of build are you suggesting with the Warmind/Psionic Fist? I'm interested in this as well. |
| LogicNinja04-27-06, 07:50 PM | Psionic Fist is the Fist of Zuoken prestige class--in the SRD, it's called "Psionic Fist" because Zuoken isn't OGL. |
| lears_fool04-28-06, 02:05 AM | Where might I find this gatling gun build? I'm intrigued by it. Hmm, I'm sure it's a ways back. . Ahh! [LINK] (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=147294&page=4) Really I took a similar mental leap to yours. . noticing that the elocator's special ability meshes disturbingly well with the scout's attack bonus. In this thread it meshed extra well, because it fed off of 'double throw' which is a master thrower ability that allows him to throw two weapons with each attack action but he loses his strength bonus (and I'll take +3d6 over that anyday). . and anyway I just kind of fed off of it. I really like that dimension hop ability too, means several times a day you can get the full attack even before you get the 10' step And yup, Logicninja answered the other question, the Psionic Fist is just the SRD version of the Fist of Zudoken |
