how would you manage best to keep your opponents from escaping the battlefield and let them return for their revenge later times ?

i'd considers diffenrent factors:
base class: rouge - fighter - caster typ
your & their movement: overland - through land - fly - dimensional
terrain: overland - dungeon - something wierd
enemy: size - number - counterattack (your retreat ?) - keep it alive ?!

my favorite atm is the gish i'm - still... - working on, though i questioned myself how "perfect" it was considering above topic.

he is a half-celestial sorceror, so the tactics i had in mind:
he can fly and has wooping stats, so he can exercise battlefield control from the start on.
early on it's quite easy - flying you will take out quite anyone that time.
the time harder guys come into play, he has boosted tripping and got enlarge (whooping 15 ft range).
the more difficult part is dimension and other magic travel. the tactics would be to cast dimensional anchor and then close in to melee. mid levels assuming there are not too many dbl-power-casters (magic & melee), it should be sufficient to engange in melee with tripping + added mage slayer (from mhb) to completly deny any further casting.
on high levels for the bad buddys i'd go with amf (possibly try to gain some aoe shaping power) and again close into melee, using the mobility of fly (ex) and readied actions. (tough... i can retreat by fly - if that fails, i cut myself seariously from the power of emergancy use of magic until amf has expired)

this build doesn't care so much for high number - low power enemys, as fly & fireball alone should be almost always enough to deal with them.

Area effect spells that immobilize huge numbers of creatures: Grease, Sleep, Stinking Cloud, Web etc

Fireball might seem like a good idea, but Web + arrows/scorching ray is much better IMHO.

but web + arrow rains take some time, and you want to see those minions usually dead fast and close on the real bbeg(s)

solid spells though, at least for low levels.

Against one BBEG, MDJ (quickened via rod) + Dimensional Lock, followed by a Force Cage on the next round
