| Caelic09-29-04, 05:14 PM | Folks, Just toying with the idea of a monstrously-cheesy hammer wielder...a Shiba Protector gone a-travelling and adopted into a Dwarven clan. Has anyone done anything along these lines? I'm thinking some mixture of Cleric/Fighter/Stoneblessed/Shiba Protector/Battlesmith/Hammer of Moradin, but I'm unsure of what specific mix to use...particularly since I don't have the Hammer of Moradin handy. Any thoughts? |
| Battousai09-29-04, 05:26 PM | I can't help much with the build , but the hammer of Moradin can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040305a Maybe Paladin rather than fighter if you can afford it? The Wisdom will be more useful then. |
| Caelic09-29-04, 06:33 PM | Very rough build: Human (Shiba Clan) STR: 16 DEX: 8 CON: 14 INT: 10 WIS: 16 CHA: 8 1. Shaman 1: Unarmed Strike, animal companion, War and Travel domains (WF: Warhammer,) Iron Will, Endurance 2. Shaman 2: Spirit Sight 3. Shaman 3: Turn Undead, Alertness 4. Shaman 4: Combat Expertise 5. Fighter 1: EWP: Heavy Warhammer 6. Fighter 2: Power Attack, WF (Heavy Warhammer) 7. Shiba Protector 1: No Mind 8. Stoneblessed 1: Stonebond 9. Stoneblessed 2: Racial Battle Technique 10. Stoneblessed 3: Stoneborn, +2 Con 11. Battlesmith 1: One with the hammer, secrets of the forge 12. EWM 1: Uncanny Blow 13. Hammer of Moradin 1: Aura of Courage, hammer throw 14. Hammer of Moradin 2: Goblinkiller, hammer return 15. Hammer of Moradin 3: DR 2/-, Power Grip 16. Hammer of Moradin 4: Far Shot, Quake 17. Hammer of Moradin 5: Drowbasher, Power Strike 2/day 18. Hammer of Moradin 6: DR 4/- 19. Hammer of Moradin 7: Chaos Crusher, Stalwart 20. Hammer of Moradin 8: Giantslayer, Thunderstrike BAB: +17 Fort: +17 Ref: +4 Will: +13 When swinging a heavy warhammer two-handed, the character nets 2.5 times his Strength bonus to damage, Strength and Wisdom to attack rolls, and double Wis to damage. Assuming final stats of 30 for Strength and 26 for Wisdom (for the sake of argument,) we get a +18 to attack rolls and a +41 to damage rolls before Power Attack and before any weapon bonuses. Kinda neat, in an off-kilter way, although it has some SERIOUS drawbacks (like that Reflex save...ow.) Perhaps a more fruitful approach might be had with a Goliath who takes Stoneblessed in Dwarf...I'll investigate that possibility later. |
| Battousai09-30-04, 03:42 AM | Instead of the War domain , take the Metal Domain. That way, you gain EWP(Heavy Warhammer) and WF(Heavy Warhammer) at first level and you can replace fighter with something that gives a boost to your reflex save. |
| Blade271809-30-04, 10:38 AM | Kinda neat, in an off-kilter way, although it has some SERIOUS drawbacks (like that Reflex save...ow.)Alas, no room to fit Kensai. |
| PhoenixInferno09-30-04, 11:18 AM | The section on standard PHB races in Oriental Adventures suggests that Dwarves exist in the orient. Not only that, but it also suggests that Dwarven society is very similar to that of the Clans. To me, this implies that a Dwarf clan could be closely allied with the Phoenix clan - allowing for Dwarven Shiba Protectors without taking Stoneblessed levels. It relies on flavor text and a DM's interpretation, but hey - you can work in 3 levels of something else now. |
| Blade271809-30-04, 11:26 AM | Like Kensai!! [EDIT] Wait a minute...Withstand is Kensai 5! Darn, no dice unless you can find 2 more levels to give up. |
| Khazra Reborn09-30-04, 11:47 AM | i believe 1 level of the dwarven cleric subclass (races of stone) gives +2 to damage with warhammers, good if you want to go TWF. Actually i think the build would already be better as a Twf, using a double hammer, actually a heavy (gold) double warhammer as you need EWP anyway, for 2D6 each end. |
| Battousai09-30-04, 11:51 AM | Actually i think the build would already be better as a Twf, using a double hammer, actually a heavy (gold) double warhammer as you need EWP anyway, for 2D6 each end. IIRC , the damage bonus that the Hammer of Moradin receives only applies when you use the hammer as a two-hands weapon. |
| Khazra Reborn09-30-04, 11:55 AM | the exceprt you quoted the hammer of Moradin gains a bonus equal to one-half his Strength bonus (rounded down) on damage rolls when wielding a warhammer in melee This means a TWF gets 1.5*str mod with primary hand & 1*str mof off hand. |
| PhoenixInferno09-30-04, 12:10 PM | Shaman 1: Unarmed Strike, Animal Companion, Metal Domain (EWP,WF(Heavy Warhammer)), Travel Domain, Endurance Shaman 2: Spirit Sight Shaman 3: Turn Undead, Alertness Shaman 4: Combat Expertise Shaman 5: Shaman 6: Iron Will Shaman 7 Shaman 8: <FEAT> Sha 8/EWM 1: Uncanny Blow, <FEAT> Sha 8/EWM 1/Shiba Protector 1: No thought Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 1: Aura of Courage, Hammer Throw Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 1/Battlesmith 1: One with the Hammer, Secrets of the Forge, <FEAT> Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 2/Battlesmith 1: Goblinkiller, Hammer Return Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 3/Battlesmith 1: DR 2/-, Powerful Grip Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 4/Battlesmith 1: Far Shot, Quake, <FEAT> Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 5/Battlesmith 1: Drowbasher, Power Strike 2/day Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 5/BS 1/Kensai 1: Signature Weapon Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 5/BS 1/Kensai 2: Power Surge, <FEAT> Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 6/BS 1/Kensai 2: DR 4/- Sha 8/EWM 1/SP 1/HoM 7/BS 1/Kensai 2: Chaos Crusher, Stalwart You qualify for the Prestige Classes a little late, and need to say that being closely allied to the Shiba family is sufficient to meet the racial entry requirements. |

| Dain09-30-04, 12:43 PM | Shaman 1: Unarmed Strike, animal companion, War and Travel domains (WF: Warhammer,) Iron Will, Endurance War domain? This guy is supposed to worship Moradin, right? --> but the war domain isn't one of Moradin's domains. Am I missing something? |
| Lorimo the Disbeliever09-30-04, 01:21 PM | Dwarf -> Shiba Protector is flawed RP- and rulewise, imho. ShibaPr prerequisite: human(Phoenix clan). So no dwarf here, by the book. Shaman is out too - the only shamans in Empire belongs to Kitsu family. Glory of Phoenices = their shugenja, not shamans. |

Shaman is out too - the only shamans in Empire belongs to Kitsu family. Glory of Phoenices = their shugenja, not shamans. Its a silly racial requirement. Nothing about the PrC screams "human-only." Also, Dwarves - and Shamans - can exist in a modified Rokugan. Caelic never said this was for a Rokugan specific world - it could be any Oriental flavored setting where Dwarves and Shamans exist. And I did qualify my post by saying you need DM approval. shiba protector is rarely used in a good way, its one of the few classes it really smells like munchkin if its used... I'm just running with Caelic's idea. I don't like its stench of cheese, either. |
| Caelic09-30-04, 05:11 PM | Hey, I never said I'd actually use this monstrosity. On the other hand, on a board where people create billion-damage Hulking Hurlers and consider Ur Priest Divine Disciples kosher, I think complaints over a character using Shaman when officially all the Shamans belong to a different clan sort of pale. ;) |
| Caelic09-30-04, 05:13 PM | War domain? This guy is supposed to worship Moradin, right? --> but the war domain isn't one of Moradin's domains. Am I missing something? As a Shaman, he doesn't technically worship any god, and is free to pick any two domains. The Moradin-worship would come later in the story, after being adopted by a Dwarven clan. |
| Lorimo the Disbeliever10-01-04, 09:11 AM | As a Shaman, he doesn't technically worship any god, and is free to pick any two domains. Nah. As a Shaman, you must pick domains from Shaman's Domains list. Its a silly racial requirement. Nothing about the PrC screams "human-only." Well, then go further and make some dwarven bladesingers (axe-growlers? :D) or warforged Red Wizards (Hail to the C3PO, the new Zulkir of Transmutation!). Why not? You CAN add dwarves in modified Rokugan. But new races will (as nezumi and nagas) make their own clans. With they own clan-specific PrC (you can adopt Hammer of Moradin or Deep Warden for this role, if you wish). IMO, the only legal way to mix Shiba w/HoM is Shiba human->Stoneblessed->HoM. Imagine Drizzt exiled to Blingdenstone and became assimilated into gnome community. Same thing. |
| Caelic10-01-04, 03:25 PM | Nah. As a Shaman, you must pick domains from Shaman's Domains list. Err...that's what I meant. War and Earth are both Shaman domains. IMO, the only legal way to mix Shiba w/HoM is Shiba human->Stoneblessed->HoM. Imagine Drizzt exiled to Blingdenstone and became assimilated into gnome community. Same thing. Err...I thought that was what I did. |
| Blade271810-01-04, 03:44 PM | Yeah, but PhoenixInferno wanted to argue that in the case of a non-Rokugan, Oriental setting that featured a clan system and demihumans, a Dwarf could, theoretically, have ties to that campaign's Crane clan and therefore qualify. |
| PhoenixInferno10-01-04, 04:59 PM | Yeah, but PhoenixInferno wanted to argue that in the case of a non-Rokugan, Oriental setting that featured a clan system and demihumans, a Dwarf could, theoretically, have ties to that campaign's Crane clan and therefore qualify. You mean PHOENIX clan, don't you? :) Yes, I claim that in a non-Rokugan, Oriental flavored campaign setting that featured a clan system like Rokugan as well as demi-humans, then my build is legal. Oriental flavor != Rokugan necessarily. |
| Deepwood_Sniper10-02-04, 12:52 AM | Sorry if this sounds dumb but what boock is the heavy warhammer in? |
| Caelic10-02-04, 11:04 AM | Sorry if this sounds dumb but what boock is the heavy warhammer in? "Heavy" is a weapon property found in Magic of Faerun. It can be applied to most weapons, not just warhammers. |
