I saw another thread that was a little like this..but not exactly..they wanted to have a melee hunter type, and people gave suggestions..and they said some magic-user type suggestions too..

Anyway..the idea I wanted worked out with is an archer-ranged type hunter..basically think of it in modern terms here..a guy that lives in a big ole hunting lodge lookin place with animal heads all over his walls and always tellin stories about how he took down the grand daddy of all grizzlies..

..I want something like that..but in a 3.5 FR setting..not really wanting ranger..track is okay..but I don't really want to have any real favored enemies that I can think of..well..actually he isn't big on the whole humanoid-killing thing..so he kinda has a problem with killing orcs and goblins..no matter how evil they are supposed to be..but he would take down a dragon, unicorn, umberhulk, dire badger..and all them 4 legged dealies..I mean I guess the favored thing of a ranger would be OKAY..but I kinda wanted this guy to want to be as good with one of em as the other..know what I mean?

Anyway..using whatever you can from the core books, splats, and whatever..give it a shot..1-20 :)

And if you MUST use a ranger, go for it..oh, and I am not really sure on if I wanna go with bow or crossbow yet :)

I do know that I want him eventually to own a wagon with a trailer on the back that has a mounted swivel ballista..but don't worry bout that in the build..heh

As you've already noticed there doesn't seem to be any "hunter" classes that aren't specific to one type of creature. Foe Hunter is a grand class, but it only works vs one type. Wilderness Rogue(unearthed arcana) is an option I've been considering. Huge skillpoints, sneak attack, uncanny dodge, evasion and special abilities. This could work for a ranged build, but you'de likely be better off just taking a archery prestige class and have your base classes be fighter/ranger. If you're doing 3.5 Ranger 2/Fighter4 then going into a prc is a fine path.

So unless there's something in a book I'm unfamiliar with your best bet is deepwood sniper, order of the bow initiate, or peerless archer.

What we need is a casterless ranger variant that gets more "hunter-like" abilities. Would be very interesting. Maybe if you;ve been tracking something for so long you get a bonus when you fight it.

Hrm..maybe a variation on the favored enemy ability..instead of getting a +1 vs goblinoids that lasts forever, then goes to +2 goblinoids, +1 dragons..maybe have it just be a flat +1 vs all IF you spend 10 rounds or something stalking the thing without being seen?

Because really..all humanoids tends to have the same basic body structure..none of the monsters I know of have their brain and their heart in their left foot.
