Beef up my Duskblade [Archive] - Wizards Community

(Moved from Classes and Prestige Classes board...)

I have a level 6 Duskblade in a campaign that will take us to level 9. As I see it now, taking all 9 levels in Duskblade won't net me much gain spellcasting-wise. Therefore, I want to beef up my melee fighting. What should I multiclass in? I am thinking some Fighter or Barbarian. Any prestige classes I should look at?

If it helps, I have my Duskblade setup for Two Weapon Fighting with Weapon Finesse (elven Duskblade, high DEX). Oh, and we are fighting a lot of undead.

Perhaps this thread would be more suited for the CharOp boards...

An interesting Prc for the Duskblade is the Green Star Adept from Complete Arcane. The skill reqs are easily met and you get Combat Casting for free from DB. However, acquiring a piece of starmetal may be a bit of a pain.

A 3 level dip would increase your caster level by 3 and spells/day by 1, get you DR 3/adamantine, +1 str/nat armor, a slam attack, +2 on saves against poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects and necromancy effects, and 25% fortification.

It would help if you gave us more of your current feat selections (elven DB has 3 feats at 6th), sourcebooks allowed, any house rules, etc.

Either way...just my 2 cp

My Duskblade:

Elven Duskblade level 6
STR - 13
DEX - 22
CON - 14
INT - 16
WIS - 12
CHA - 10

Feats: Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting

As far as I know we can use any books. No house rules, but my DM is flexible with rules and will allow most anything as long as its not overpowered.

I just read the Duskblade optimization thread and its full of great ideas, but it focuses on characters that will reach level 20.

Does anyone have any ideas for what I should take over the next 3 levels to get the most bang for my buck?

I'd say Power Attack, Arcane Strike (9th) would get you the best low level return. Leap attack could be nice at 6th, or Battle caster if you can't afford Mithral full plate.

Str> Con/Int > Dex > Wis > Cha

That sounds great, except that we already started the campaign and I'm stuck with TWF, ITWF and Weapon Finesse while dual-wielding Short Swords. In hindsight I should have went with a sword and board for the same AC and fewer, more powerful attacks. If I had gone that route, Power Attack and Arcane Strike would be pretty sweet.

I am considering adding a level or two of Fighter, Barbarian or Ranger for the following reasons.

Fighter: d10 HD, bonus feats
Barbarian: d12 HD, +10 movement, rage
Ranger: Favored Enemy(Undead), TWF class feat (might be able to convince the DM to let me replace this with another feat of my choice).

I just don't know what class to add and what feat(s) to pick up over the next few levels.

I'd probably stick to Duskblade until at least lvl 13. I likes my class abilities and spells sooner.

Shame about the TWFing, maybe retraining is an option (Swap Str/Dex too).

Campaign only goes to level 9.

Oh! In that case, I'd stick it through with Duskblade and snag Arcane Strike at lvl 9.

While Power Attack and Leap attack are great suggestions in a typical DB build, this character has already selected TWF and Wpn Finesse. Therefore, they would be rather counterproductive, IMO.

I'm almost positive there are some excellent options available from the Tome of Battle. However, being that I don't own it I cannot comment on anything specific.

The only otherr thing I can think of is adding Rogue levels to give you some bonus damage dice to enhance your TWF. I'm AFB, but I cannot think of any Prcs that you qualify for (other than GSA)

Feats: Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting

and combat casting ;)

Take Two Weapon Pounce from PHB II, it allows you to hit with both weapons on a charge attack.

Also if you have Tome of Battle take the Rapid Assualt feat. Anyway its a feat that allows you an extra 1d6 damage with all your melee attacks in the first round of combat.

So if you snag 2 levels of fighter you should grab these feats and maybe grab Weapon Focus at 9th level.

Rogue (for the sneak attack, I assume) wouldn't work with all the Undead we are fighting.

I was leafing through Races of the Wild and noticed the Racial Substitution Levels. If I take a level in Elf Ranger, I can pick Undead as my favored enemy to get +3 to attack and damage rolls. Also, with the Player's Handbook 2, I can change my ability scores a little bit. I could reduce my WIS by 1 to be able to increase my STR by 1. This will output a little more damage as well. With my +1 Shortsword, I would be dealing 1d6 +6 (+1 enchantment, +3 favored enemy, +2 strength, right?).

The Green Star Adept is really tempting, though. As well as just going straight Duskblade.

So many choices...

Thats not a bad idea. With my +6 initiative I am often first to go. Those 2 feats would certainly allow me to start the encounter with a decent one-two combo.

Duskblade 5/ Warblade 1/ Jade Phoenix Mage 3 is pretty good...
