I think you all know the webcomic "Order of the Stick".
My question is about the halfling ranger named Belkar. I think he must be seriously min/maxed because he is so badass and I always thought halflings suck at melee. What do you think are his stats?

Don't forget that he has 1 level of Barbarian now! :)

You don't know that for sure, Todd. All you know is that Belkar checked into multiclassing by going to the Barbarian's Guild. I want to see him rage before I believe he multiclassed (and therefore got hit with the XP penalty stick).

His first rage will likely be when he finds out about the hit. ;)

Well, he's 2 weapon dagger. It's been discussed he's a ranger, and if his wisdom was high enough he could cast spells - didn't he cast from a scroll while under the influence of Owl's Wisdom?

Invisible blade works for full BAB and sneak attack, a nice combonation for a TWF. But not all of the levels, we never see him feint. On the other hand, it could just be that 8 Int doesn't leave him enough skill points for Bluff, which seems correct from RP bluffs he's tried.

I'd be tempted to put in a few levels of rogue - sneak attack, favored class, etc. But he doesn't seem to have any sneakly skills. (Sneakly? Is that a word?) Actually, he doesn't seem to have any skills at all. ;) Wait, didn't he tumble and jump? That could be it.

Rage isn't all that big for him from a CO perspective - only half Str to the offhand weapon. Though it should add to hit - he doesn't seem like a finesse sort of fellow.

Okay, point by, we know 8 for Int, Wis, and Chr. I'd put his Int even lower if possible - he doesn't seem to have spent any ranger skill points. Wisdom seems about right. He does stupid things, but a Owl's Wisdom brough him up high enough to cast a spell. Chr just makes sense, he's a abrasive fellow.

Hmm, off to reread some OOTS to stat him out more. What level do you think they are? With them leveling all at the same time it seems likely they are of level.

Cheers,

I would say they are something between lvl 9-11

In #111 Durkon casts "Righteous Might" (lvl 5) and in #104 "Disrupting Weapon" (also lvl 5) so I think he is lvl 10 maybe.

Belkar seems to be under lvl 9 (if he hasn't multiclassed with something) because in #19 he didn't evade the breath of the dragon ( of course, he could have failed his ref-save).

V is probably at least lvl 9 or 10 ( if he is on par with the Drizz't clone I would say he's at least lvl 11 because of #53.

Ranger 9 seems the most straightforward. He's always a bit behind the party in XP, too, don't forget -- relying on monologues or trying to hunt Elan for XP -- so this suggests a slightly lower level than everyone else, which I'd say would be 10-11.

And those may not be daggers -- halfling-sized shortswords are dagger-sized to humans, and waaaaaay back in strip 1, his weapon shrunk (which implies he went from "short sword" to "small short sword").

He probably isn't all that min-maxed. He's just got the right feats and ability scores -- likely a high dex, weapon finesse, and a respectable strength (compared to a human, rather than a halfling). Remember that his Wisdom is at MOST a 10 (he couldn't cast anything without an Owl's Wisdom), and it's likely lower given his track record on Spot (though he is supposed to be a good tracker, so I assume he just has a lot of Survival ranks, and possibly Skill Focus). With a 10 wisdom, he's not that optimized of a ranger, now, is he? :D And he could certainly afford to put higher rolls in Strength if he didn't prioritize his wisdom.

To me, Belkar smacks of a wannabe min-maxer where the DM restricts everyone to core-only and doesn't like multiclassing. I mean, he probably has Int 10, Wis 8-10, Cha 6 -- and his player is playing them as such.

I'm pretty sure V is a she (recall the one comic V roomed with Haley).

I wouldn't put them over 10th level. None of them have ever cast 6 level spells and they do a lot of running away from ogres and such.

Belkar is, as before stated, a TWF Ranger. He has probably taken Weapon Finesse or has an abnormally high strength, because he seems to hit often. I'm leaning towards to the latter, given that he does quite a bit of damage. He also probably has middling Dex and high Con. His favored enemies seem to be Kolbold and Goblinoid. I wouldn't be surprised if he had WF. Oh yes, he has an evil alignment. Probably CE.

Vaarsuvius seems to be a straight Wizard. I suspect that V is either an evoker or transmuter, given the good blasting abilities. Of course, V might not even have a school. It is possible that V has a prestige class, since Blackwing the Raven Familiar almost never shows up (and Familiar's are quite spiffy if they're at full power). V has an 18 base Int (See Mind Flayer). Likely LN. Other Notes: Has Meteorswarm, Time Stop and Wish in spell book.

Durkon Thundershield is straight cleric, almost certainly. His domains probably include War. His god IS Thor, after all. LG.

Elan is a Bard with an 18 Cha (Base, at least, Haley mentions this). Elan's player is probably the best RPer. Elan himself is pretty dumb and witless (low int and wis), but he generally uses his spells and abilities judiciously (He fights splendidly vs Nale, and is able to extract himself from bad situations at the bandit camp). Also, as a side note: don't forget, Elan has a belt of Masculinity/Femaninity. CG. Other notes: Perform (Lute) and Perform (Singing)

Roy Greenhilt is a straight Fighter. WF: Greatsword, WS: Greatsword, and probably GWF: Greatsword and IC: Greatsword. Also, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave. Roy is the party's smartest member, or at least has the most common sense. He probably rolled very high. LN to LG.

Haley Starshine is a Rogue bow specialist. Highest Stat Dex. Middling Int, and a Good Cha to boot. She uses Manyshot and as a result has PBS and RS. CG.

You know, since Belkar never seems to level up exactly when the others do, he may actually be just behind them in XP. Which could mean he's already suffering multiclass penalties. Just a thought.
