| SmiloDan02-01-04, 09:25 AM | I play a 3rd level dwarf ranger right now. Str 18 Dex 16 Con 19 (20 after level 4) Int 12 Wis 13 (14 after level 8) Cha 9 Feats: 1. Power Attack 1. Dwarven Waraxe (dwarf bonus feat) 1. Track (ranger) 2. Combat Style (Two Weapon Fighting) 3. Cleave 3. Endurance (ranger) He currently wields a pair of +1 dwarven waraxes. Should I get Weapon Focus (dwarven waraxe) or Great Cleave or something else entirely? The only applicable house rule is that initiative is rolled on 1d10 instead of 1d20, so Improved Initiative would also be very potent. Also, while I'm thinking of it, what would a good animal companion be? I'm leaning towards wardog, but the half-caster level of the ranger really makes the animal companion relatively weak compared to the CRs of the opponents. Would it be better to have a scouting-type animal companion? If so, what kind? The rest of the party is: Pyschic Warrior/Fighter/Swashbuckler (6th total?) with an insane AC and few hp. Uses rapier and whip to great effect. A rogue 2 /wizard 2 wannabe loremaster. A rogue 5 /sorcerer 1 A cleric 6 A wizard 6 |

| Snow Savant02-01-04, 11:15 AM | SmiloDan, You are at -4 to hit with those bad boys ... (-2 = TWF ... -2 = Twin Medium-Sized Weapons). Are you having a rough time hitting your foes even with a STR 18 and +1 enchantments? Your next feat should probably be one to help you boost your attack bonus higher (your Weapon Focus suggestion). XO, Snow :cloud9: |
| pawsplay02-01-04, 11:37 AM | Weapon Focus, yes. It would effectively reduce your penalties for TWF to -3/-3, if you want to look at it that way. |
| SmiloDan02-01-04, 11:38 AM | Yeah, with 2 waraxes, my attack bonus is +4/+4. With one it's +8, and with my main axe and shield spike is +6/+5. |
| BenjCano02-01-04, 01:34 PM | SmiloDan... You realize that you get proficiency with the Dwarven Urgosh as well as the Dwarven Waraxe...a double weapon that you don't even need to blow a feat on works well with your two-weapon mojo. Why not start using one of those to reduce your penalties to -2/-2? As far as your feat goes, Weapon Focus with the Urgosh wouldn't be a complete waste....I've never seen Great Cleave get much use, so I wouldn't recommend it. If you were to increase your Intelligence at 4th level, you would qualify for the Expertise feat tree...Improved Trip would be a valid pick for you at 9th, since the difficulties of tripping a dwarf and all that. Any airial scout would make a fine choice for a scouting companion, hawks and eagles and owls. Don't forget that you can pick up a horse, and if your Handle Animal skill has seen some modifiers put into it, you could train it to be a warhorse. If you kept with the warhorse, you might want to consider Mounted Combat and Mounted Archery. |
| SmiloDan02-01-04, 01:59 PM | I don't think there are horses in this campaign. It's all underground in these huge caverns. We already have a rapier and whip-wielding tripper. I'm supposed to be the tank. Also, the urgosh does less damage. And I don't have a way to get one readily for a while. I considered using one, since when charging or moving and attacking, I could add 1 1/2 Str to dam, but it's not really worth it if the damage dice are 1d8/1d6. Also, my character's name is Duncan Axestorm, so having lots of axe strikes is kind of poetic or whatever. |
