| SoulLord10-29-03, 04:29 PM | im trying to boost a wizards AC using only the dmg as a reference it seems so far thet the only things worth it are Bracers of armor +8 (armor bonus) Amulet of natural armor +5 (natural armor bonus) gloves of dexterity +6 (+3 dodge bonus) dusty rose ioun stone (+1 insight bonus) for a total of +17 wich doesnt seem so good are there any more ac boosting magic items in the dmg that would stack or be better than the above stuff? SoulLord |
| Jindl10-29-03, 04:37 PM | monks belt (Wis mod + 1 to AC) ring of forceshield (+2 AC, 0 acp, 0 arcane spellfailure) potion of reduce person (+1 size, +1 dex bonus = +2 AC) ring of protection +5 (+5 deflection bonus) So there's another 10+your wis mod to your AC... -Jindl EDIT: Boots of speed (+1 to ac from haste...) Thats 11 + wis mod... |
| nyphoenix7910-29-03, 04:40 PM | Yeah you forgot ring of protection +5 (+5 deflection bonus) Also one thing to consider is stuf like blur/displacement/ invisibility/fog/mist, etc. Not exactly armor class but does help keep you from getting hit. Doh jindl beat me to it.:tantrum: |
| SoulLord10-29-03, 06:14 PM | the ring of forceshield looks interesting i shall consider to burn a feat to have the wizard learn to use shields also missed the ring of protection i considered it but i tought it gave an armor bonus like the one from the bracers of armor :P SoulLord |
| eudas10-29-03, 06:35 PM | masterwork mithral buckler +5.. eudas |
| Lokathor10-29-03, 06:59 PM | You dont' need a feat to use shields (or armor for that matter) if it has 0 Armor Check Penality.... read the rules on non-proficiency with armor/shields. |
| Gruffmug10-30-03, 01:28 AM | Lets see what we have so far.... masterwork mithral buckler +5..+6ac monks belt (Wis mod + 1 to AC) ring of forceshield (+2 AC, 0 acp, 0 arcane spellfailure) potion of reduce person (+1 size, +1 dex bonus = +2 AC) ring of protection +5 (+5 deflection bonus) Bracers of armor +8 (armor bonus) Periflait of wisdom +6 (+3 dodge bonus see monks belt) Amulet of natural armor +5 (natural armor bonus) gloves of dexterity +6 (+3 dodge bonus) dusty rose ioun stone (+1 insight bonus) Boots of speed (+1 to ac from haste...) manual of dexterity(+5)+2dodge bonus So a grand total of 49+wis AC if ring of forceshield and +5 mithral buckler stack. Can spell effects increse this further? Gruffmug |
| Endarire10-30-03, 01:42 AM | Add the Dodge feat for +1 AC, though I'm unsure if that was what Soul wanted. -EE |
| SoulLord10-30-03, 11:08 AM | Impressive i hadnt noticed those details about the shield proficience ill add the mithrill buckler to the arsenal a quick question tough whats the spell failure for a mithral buckler? SoulLord |
| Setanos10-30-03, 12:36 PM | a quick question tough whats the spell failure for a mithral buckler? 0% :) |
| Psyrus10-30-03, 12:46 PM | Polymorph or Shapechange can be used to increase AC. The natural armor gained will stack with an Amulet of Natural armor. Green Hag (via polymorph) have +11 natural AC and Planetar (via shapechange) has +19 natural AC. |

Can spell effects increse this further? Gruffmug Ring of forceshield gives shield bonus to AC so does buckler -> No stacking there. Buckler does not stack with "shield" spell either. The monk's belt is uber broken, but its in DMG. Monks lose the WIS to AC when wearing shield though. Thus the user of monk's belt would lose it also. -> Either no shield or no monk's belt. As the belt is a broken item you might as well skip that one. |
| Lord_of_the_Seven_Towers10-30-03, 02:57 PM | Where does it say that Natural Armour bonuses from race/creature stack with a Natural Armour bonus from the Amulet of Natural Armour. It does not specify in the DMG that the two natural armour bonuses stack and natural armour PHB p.136 does not mention any stacking either. Seeing as Dodge bonuses specifically say that they stack then i am guessing that the same would be made apparent if the same was also true of these types of natural armour bonus. In the epic level handbook p.50 under Armour Skin it specifies that the +2 bonus the feat grants is added to the character's natural AC bonus but that this does not stack with natural AC bonuses that are provided by magic items. However this is an enhancement bonus to Natural Armour and we know that some enhancement bonuses to natural AC do stack with normal natural armour for tough skin etc. The spell Barkskin P. 203 of the PHB says that the enhancement bonus from the spell stacks with normal natural AC bonuses (but obviously not with other things that provide an enhancement bonus to natural AC, like the Amulet of Natural Armour). So does anyone have the definitive word on whether the enhancement bonus to Natural Ac stacks with the Natural Bonus to AC from say having tough skin etc? I.e. does it appear in wizards product anywhere? |
| Vorpal Warhammer10-30-03, 03:34 PM | The Barkskin spell and the Amulet of Natural Armor both provide an enhancement bonus to your natural armor. Alter Self, Polymorph, and Shapechange give you a base natural armor score, which then benefits from the enhancement bonus. |

| SoulLord10-31-03, 11:32 AM | ------active most of the time-------------- masterwork mithral buckler +5..+6ac ring of protection +5 (+5 deflection bonus) Bracers of armor +8 (armor bonus) Amulet of natural armor +5 (natural armor bonus) gloves of dexterity +6 (+3 dodge bonus) dusty rose ioun stone (+1 insight bonus) manual of dexterity(+5)+2dodge bonus AC.- 10 base +30 = 40 ac ----have to be activated------------------ potion of reduce person (+1 size, +1 dex bonus = +2 AC) Boots of speed (+1 to ac from haste...) ac 43 i removed the monks belt and their subsecuent wis to ac increases to be able to use the shield i was cheking the dmg and was womdering if the bonus from the ioun stone could be increased ....after all the formula is there SoulLord |
| Jindl10-31-03, 12:55 PM | SoulLord - I don't see why one couldn't increase the bonus from the ioun stone. But if you're going to make magic items, I suggest an item that lets the wearer shapechange into a creature with super high base natural armor (which would stack with the amulet...) As for an additional item, how about a +5 defending/ +5 defending quarterstaff? The defending bonus is a dodge bonus, so both ends would stack (giving an additional +8 dodge bonus total...) BTW: I think a druid could get a higher AC than the wizard. -Jindl |
