Can anyone help me figure out some good animals to transform into as a 6th level druid? I was thinking Lion and Brown Bear, but I can't change into those until level 8 (they are large).

Pretty much all of the animals that are either medium or small only have (at most) 2-3 hit dice, which seems kind of... mediocre. Is there something I'm missing?

I think the best MM1 animal is the deinonychus (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/dinosaur.htm#deinonychus). If you have more books, your options are a little better.

Ah, thanks. I forgot that that had been changed from the original MM, where it is large.

What other options are there for medium creatures from other sources?

The Fleshraker Dinosaur (MM3) is downright disgusting....

It will probably beat everything until you hit large size.

Ditto that. The Fleshraker actually stays competitive for quite a long time. It's easily the best low-level option.

The Druid Handbook (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=465005) has pretty big lists of the best forms to take, even if it's a little outdated.
