Any suggestions for an 12th level archer priest? I was thinking about taking Solonor as the diety with Elf/War (longbow). Possibly thinking about picking up Order of the Bow. High Wisdom and taking Zen Archery feat...

Or taking Sheverash (war/elf), being a 1/2 elf, possibly with some levels in Ranger. I noticied that retribution gives me full damage, so another version could have swiched early into Order of the bow (say 4 levels) to do due some major damage on a single hit.

Thoughts?

I'm not all that knowedgable about cleric archers, but I do know that caster level is everything for a cleric archer. You don't want to be taking levels of OotBI if you are going to go that route. I'm sure someone else will reply with more specific advice for a cleric archer soon. You could also do a search for cleric archer builds, as there have been several threads on it in the last month or so.

If you're looking for a straight warrior-type archer (ranger/fighter w/ PrC's) I could give you some good builds, but I don't think that's what you're looking for;)

Keep caster progression.

Try the build below, you might want to consider taking TIme as a domain instead but it requires reworking of the feats since you need +1 BAB for Weapon Focus (or you could just not take it).

Because of the upcomming nerf of Persistant spell, I much prefer Quicken spell for rapid buffing rather than all day buffing so you might want to take this earlier.
Also you could drop extend spell for Craft Rod and make rods of quickening, maybe taking the Time domain and changing Weapon Focus for Quick Draw.

Also you might consider evlen suraces that don't give a Wis penalty since Dex isn't really that important if you take Zen Archery.

Aslo as a side note, any 3.5 cleric that doesn't take 5 ranks in Knowledge (Religion) should have their head examined to see if anyone can locate their tiny little mind. :D

event -- i noticed the lack of Persistent Spell and replacing it with Quicken Spell. is this in antipation for the nerf coming to Persisant Spell?

Just wondering on your reasoning. for this 12th level character...

Why such a high Str? Since Solonor's chosen weapon is a longbow, you couldn't use a composite bow, or add your str bonus for arrow hits?

Why not a higher Wisdom, which would aid in spell casting and with zen archery?

Why not get another archery feat instead on Extend Spell or Impr Initiative?

Extend Spell is still awfully nice to have for Magic Vestment and GMW.

I also have to question the choice of Improved Initiative--I just don't see how it's crucial to the build. Getting it for free via domain choice is one thing; taking it as one of your limited number of feats is another.

I'd go with Time rather than War. As pointed out, the Weapon Focus isn't all that useful if you want to use, say, a Mighty Composite Longbow (depending on how generous your DM is in ruling weapons essentially similar.) Cat's Grace and Haste aren't as juicy as they used to be in 3.5, but they're still worth having...and Permanency, Contingency, and Time Stop open up some extremely interesting possibilities.

Contingency, in particular, is key to the Quickened Cleric Archer, IMO. Slapping your Divine Power into the Contingency is a lot more cost effective than a Quickened version of same. You can do it at 12th level, as opposed to 15th, and you can set the triggering event to be "When I cast Quickened Spell X," thereby allowing you to get off two of your key buff spells in the first round.

Helicopter - Yes as I mentioned, Quicken spell is to replace persistant spell because of the upcomming nerf.

SpartanMD - In 3.5 if you have focus/proficiency in a longbow you also have it with a composite longbow so you can use a high str modifier. The wis is 16 because this frees up more points to increase other stats and its more efficient to increase stats past 16 with level boosts and items than to do it at the start. IMO

Caelic - I agree that Time is a better choice, but I put in War as well because there has been som discussion on this board as to which is better. I always try to take II especially with a low dex character since it is quite useful at lower levels, althougth its usefullness drops as the charater levels up.

Anyway it was just a quick thought and i agree it needs some work, but its a place to start.

Thanks for your input....

What is the benefit of Time? remind me, but does it give free action for a few rounds? What are the first couple of spells that available?

If time is truly superior, then i'd take Elf and Time, and take weapon focus as a feat at later levels.

Time grants Improved initiative, the main reason for the domain is that it lets clerics get the contingency and Time stop spells which are really vital now due to the upcomming Persistant spell nerf.

20 Clr 20:

The last two feats (at 15th and 18th) are up to you. Either some archery feats, more Metamagic or perhaps craft rod and quickdraw to make Metamagic rods of Quickening and be able to draw and use them in 1 round.

Use rod to quicken buff spell number 1, use Contingency to cast buff spell number 2(contingency = using meta magic rod of quickening) and use your action to cast buff spell 3 normally. That’s 3 buffs in 1 round, almost makes up for the lack of persistant spell.

Wow, I did not know that this build is so popular. I recomend a wood elf, since the bonus to str gets you a nice bonus to your damage with your free mighty (+2) composite longbow. I think it's a matter of style to take Solonor a a patron, even if you don't get time as domain.

Instead of worshiping a specific deity, try worshiping the whole elven pantheon.

The elven pantheon is a tight pantheon, and as such, by worshiping the pantheon you can choose domains from ANY of the gods in the pantheon.

Now trade out 6 levels of cleric for 6 levels of Contemplative.

This hurts your HP and BAB, but you are not relying on these in this build. You can now choose a total of 4 domains.

I recommned:

Elf
Time
Luck
Travel

But you can pick from among about half the domains in the game, so feel free to shop around.

Note that this doesn't work in the forgotten realms because you have to have one (and only one) deity in the FR setting.

what do you guys say: rapid shot vs. zen archery?
DoubleD

zen archery is dependent on Dex of course...I was lucky in rolling two 18's...going wild elf that gives a natural 20dex, 21wis at 12th level (20, 23 at 20). I decided against Zen archery and went for spellcasting prodigy...I feel the few extra spells it grants is well worth the one less to hit.

But WTF do I know

I also like taking Elf and Travel for domains on a cleric archer. Travel is very useful out of combat (Teleportation) and lets you stay away from your enemies and actually use your bow alot easier with Dimension Door, Fly, and Expeditios Retreat. Of course, the party "mage" will probably have the Teleport spell too, but it is always good to have a backup escape route for when he's down or out of Teleports for the day.

Based on the Domains you reccomend, and that we're playing FR, what about being a Ranger2/Cleric4/Seeker of the Misty Isle4 as a 10th level char?

Then you would get 3 of the great domains (Travel, War, Elf), and get the Rapid Shot feat for free as a ranger, plus have some great skills. You could still max out stats in Wis, with moderate Str and Wis, and then nerf Dex if you took Zen Archery. You would have 8th level casting and be a pretty good archer.

If you can use the Prestige ranger, you're really in luck: Hnter's mercy becomes a 1st level Cleric spell =D
