Best class choice for a Dark Stalker? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-13-03, 01:29 PM I recently noticed a very intriguing "race" named "the Dark Ones" in the Fiend Folio. It's basically a humanoid race with racial rogue-like abilities.

If I break it down by using Savage Species rules, it gives
1)+2 Str, +6 Dex, +2 Con, +2 Int, +4 Wis, +6 Cha

2)+3d6 Sneak Attack, +8Hide, +4Move Silently

3)Shadowcloak 3/day (40%miss chance) Fog Cloud 2/day

4) Poison Use, Blindsight 60ft.

It has three humanoid hit die, and a total ECL of 5.

What classes are most suitable Dark Stalker? Rogue is obviously good, as it continues progressing its SA, Fighter/Ranger classes could be helpful, since they provide Full BAB and Bonus feats.

Is anyone interested in posting a 20-level build for a Dark Stalker? (Dark Stalker5/ Combination of 15). Please share with us if you do, I'll post mine when I'm done :angel:

10-13-03, 04:16 PM This is a rough outline I've came up with :)

Dark Stalker5/ Rokugan Ninja5/ Shadowdancer2/ Ranger6 / Ninja Spy 2

Hide in Plain Sight has good synergy with the racial skill bonus (and the nice +7d6 SA)
Improved Uncanny Dodge, Improved Evasion, Track, Favored Enemy (2), TWF, Improved TWF are extremely powerful racial abilities IMO :)

The rest? Endurance, Animal Companion (read: flanking), Ki Breath, Exotic Weapon Prof, slowfall, and acrobatics are just icing.

Opinions? Critique? Better builds? I'm looking for ideas, please share them with me :)

Edit: Does any class other than Shadowdancer (lv7) and Rogue (lv10) grant the Slippery Mind Class feature?

10-13-03, 04:45 PM There is actually a typo in the dark stalker entry beneath the entry. The stat block is correct at level adjustment +5 which gives a total ECL of 8.

10-13-03, 05:30 PM Fiend Folio uses the 3.5 style stat blocks which list level adjustments rather than ECL's. Its listed as level adjustment +5 and 3 hit dice.

For some reason in the text beneath the 3hd have been forgotten when calculating the ECL. All of the other creatures in FF seem to get it right...its just this one thats wrong.

For comparison, the dark creeper is listed as +4 LA and the dark stalker is more powerful and so +5 LA seems right

10-13-03, 06:37 PM Actually, a few FF entries have mixed up LAs and ECLs. The dark creeper's LA should probably be listed as +3, and the Dark stalker's as +2. If you don't believe me, compare their abilities to those of creatures of LA+5 or +4.

10-13-03, 07:41 PM Darkstalker Rogue 15, Rogue 5/Blackguard 10, or Rogue 5/Assassin 10 all seem pretty straightforward.

Assuming the 3 racial HD give +2 BAB, DarkSt5/monk2/RokNinja13 would give you +16 BAB, evasion, Uncanny Dodge 2 and 10d6 Sneak Attack dice.

10-13-03, 08:23 PM Dark Stalkers look like human with dusky skin. They despise all forms of illumination, and always dress in dark, sober clothing.

I meant to find two different builds for a Dark Stalker, one for epic and one for non-epic. I know Assassin/Blackguard is pretty straightforward, but I'm trying get as much as possible from the remaining levels (as all good CO members should do) ;)

I think mine is alright for a non-epic build, but Dark Stalker 5 / Ninja 3 / Rogue 2 / Ninja Spy 9 is much more elegant pre-epic build. Good saves, an overabundance of abilities, and +6d6 SA.

Well~ except the very crappy BAB :sad:
At least it qualifies for Epic Dodge and Void Incarnate :P Any input guys?

Edit: Thanks for reminding me of Ninja Spy.. I can't understand how I could've miss that! Oh, and I just found out Contemplative also grants Slippery Mind.
