I'm trying to figure out the best way possible to combine swordsmanship and spells, and I'm stuck between Bladesinger (the web version that isn't completely nerfed), Eldritch Knight, Spellsword (Complete Warrior version), and a couple other oddball ideas. Problem is, I have no idea which build is the best, and so I ask you fine people for some assistance.

Details: 3.5 Standard Books + 3.0 Guidebooks + Complete Warrior
32-point staggered stat-buy

Any help please? Should I go Bard, or mix Fighter and Wizard, or maybe Sorcerer instead, or what about Ranger then Wizard or Sorcerer? Lots of options, any help would be greatly appreciated.

bladesinger is the best option on the long run, plenty of builds on the boards i think.
just be aware of the fact that you have to invest all your feats into the requirements and will therefor suck for quite some time.

spellsword is just too good to pass up for a single level, its another crappy redesign.
if you are an EK you just need a few skillpoints to qualify, get a point of BAB, two good saves and 10% ASF-ignore.
absolutely no reason to take another level.
look around for EK-builds and compare them to the bladesinger, add a single spellsword-level and you are done. (just to list the options)

While I agree 1 level of Spellsword is great I just think it stands to note that Spellsword needs heavy armor proficiency to qualify as well as martial weapons. So you could qualify for EK with 1 level of Barbarian, Ranger or Hexblade but couldn't qualify for Spellsword with just those classes.

Ftr 1/Wiz 5/EK 10/Spellsword 1 is fairly optimal if you just want a down-and-dirty melee caster.

+14 BAB, 15th level casting, 2 bonus fighter feats, bonus wiz feat, can use mithril buckler and mithril chain shirt for armour, minimal pre-requisites.

If you don't mind only having a few spells, and being a secondary caster, bladesinger is the best choice (also feat choice is limited).

Ftr 2/Wiz 4/Spellsword 1/EK 10 is another option, trading 1 level of caster level for +1 BAB and a figher feat.

Rgr 1/Ftr 2/Wiz 2/Spellsword 5/EK 10 ends with +19 BAB and a caster level of 14. Not bad.

How did you qualify for Spellsword?

D'oh! That's what I get for posting at work, and not having the book handy. Spellsword requires casting 2nd level spells, not first.

I love that thread, just because I think Fighter/Mages are the coolest things ever.

Checked that huge post with all the builds, and it helped somewhat, but overall proved to be quite daunting. I've narrowed the idea down a little bit to make it more specific, so maybe this might help...

Definitely taking three levels of Swashbuckler, since the entire idea centers around dancing around with a rapier and casting spells. That probably means I'll be taking either a level of ranger or fighter next, plus one of wizard in order to get the reqs for Bladesinger. High int and dex are a must, so do you think Grey-elf would be the best race, or would the hit to str be too hefty?
