I am looking to find some good contingencies... for my wizard always seems to find himself as not only a prime target in combat, but a magnet for attention and trouble out of combat as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some solid Contingencies? If I have to I will pick up chain Contingency as well to further my defenses.

Thanks in advance.

For contingency use spells such as Improved Invis, Teleport, Mislead, Displacement, Fire Shield, Stoneskin, Protection from Elements etc. Any of the usual buffing spells that are found.

If you get Chain Contingency just combine 3 of the above together.

My personal favourite combo is Mislead, Teleport and Ghostform.

Just remeber that you can only include spells that affect you, which is, I belive, a change from 3.0.

Finally, I would definately pick up Contingency and Chain Contngency as soon as you can.

Contingency: One minute before I'm attacked, teleport home.

Watch your DM cry as he tries to figure out what happens.

Contingency: One minute before I'm attacked, teleport home.

Nothing happens as Contingency is not able to predict the future despite what you may believe.

My personal preference for a trigger condition is "whenever I click the fingers of my right hand". It pretty much allows activation as a free action whenever you want it.

Me neither.

"Whenever I or x1, x2, x3 is attacked by a flying opponent, cast fly on me." (x1, x2, x3 are members of your group).

"Whenever someone casts magic missile at me: cast shield on me."

"Whenever my safety is being physically threatened: cast stoneskin/displacement/expeditious_retreat/shield/mirror_image on me."

"Whenever I am being grappled: cast dimension door [1000 feet up]/teleport/blink/etc on me."

Hmm, the problem there is that although clicking your fingers is a free action, you can technically only take free actions on your turn. Good for buffing, etc, but not as great for SYA situations, since contingency can act out of turn.

Basically you are getting an extra quickened slot that way, interesting.

. . .

I tend to use fairly standard stuff with contingency: stoneskin, teleport, etc.

It really depends on what your DM is throwing at you......

vs evocation spells and effects? protection from energy (assumes you know energy type, I know)

vs grapplers? blink or even grease.
vs grapplers with nasty touch attacks? protection from evil.

think BIG BROTHER is scrying on you? nondetection.

mirror image in just about any fight you get in......you could set up any defensive spell this way......just have your trigger as you saying "Oh, crap!" and you basically get a quickened defensive spell (yeah, I know this would only usually work on your turn in the initiative, but still.....)

then there is the silly/obvious:
-featherfall
-water breathing
-expeditious retreat
-jump
-enlarge person with your next intimidate check?
-locate object when you lose the keys to your house?

really need that ranged touch attack to hit? True Strike.

"When I am incapacitated, teleport to xxxx."

xxxx would depend on your alignment. If good, to a temple you have good relations with. If evil, to someone you've paid off ahead of time that you are certain will not double cross you.

Kinda annoying if you fail that save v. hold person, but general enough to save your life in the most dire circumstances. At least that's how it worked with a recurring villian I used for years.

Boy, did my players hate that BBEG.

they better hate the low score they gave to int, otherwise the second time they encountered him a little dimensional anchor would had worked wonders...

You're right of course. They finally managed to kill it, before 3ed came out. If I remember correctly, there was nothing in 2ed that could stop teleport.

Not so great in 3.0/3.5, but still nice to keep a BBEG alive for a second encounter.

Lutzaen's Frequent Jaunt from Magic of Faerun is a personal favourite of mine. It lets you do multiple dimension doors as move equivalents.

Very effective for my character as I play an Elemental Savant (Air). At 15th level, my character gets to fly as a natural movement mode, so I usually Contingency a Jaunt upwards if enemies act before me in a combat. Most enemies don't expect that so they usually spend the round looking for me. When it's my turn, I usually cast Haste, then Imp. Invis., and then Jaunt elsewhere for my move.

Not so effective in an enclosed area though.

For evocation spells and breath weapons, I use Energy Buffer from T&B. True, it only lasts one round, but Contingency is for those crucial moments when you don't have a defence up. Energy Buffer is great for that as you don't have to determine energy type beforehand. After the first round, you can cast whatever buff/protection you need.

Have your contingency be this.

Whenever I attempt to cast featherfall teleport me 6000 feet up. One night we figured that the freefall time from that height even without featherfall would grant you two combat rounds or so. With featherfall it gives you a lot more. This allows your wizard to think for two rounds what he wants to do. Typically my mage would then buff self and either end featherfall to freefall until he was 100feet up and then do a fly or perhaps a dimensional door(dim door does not carry your momentum. Great way to escape from terminal velocity speed and land safely)

The wording behind featherfall allows it to be cast as a free action even during someone else's turn. Thats what makes it so worthwhile.. If the featherfall goes off your teleport will and you float to ponder your strat. If featherfall does not go off you end up falling but am high up enough to not worry about splatting for a few rounds.

I had a wizard who loved to free fall. He loved flight overall. He would have been the first midevil bungie jumper but someone switched his rope of stretching with Rope trick rope. He dived off a cliff and after 50feet slammed into a dimensional pocket really hard.
