Does anyone have any really cool specialized magic items they've made that were especially good? could be over-all or just very niché specific. Or whats your favorite combinations of regular magic items that when used together are really neat and/or funny (folding boat and a decanter of endless water and sail across the land..........)

I really like craft contingent spells and setting groups of spells to go off in sequence at predetermined phrases. Always nice to have a good simultanious GTFO/FUBAR your enemy combo.

so, what magical items do you like?

Adventurer's cloak: Robe of useful items + Travel cloak [MoF] (8,800 gp).
If I were to choose the patches, I would probably go with the standard plus Door (2), 10 gems (5), pit (2), Cure serious wounds (5), and window (2) .

The Unbroken circle: Dwarvencraft [RoS] Astral driftmetal [A&E] Aureon's spellshard [Ebr] + Ring of meditation [Drg 317] (12,275 gp).

Jade headband of thoughtfulness: Intellect +6 + Persuasion, can be used as the focus for Shapechange (42,750 gp).

I also really like the Druid's satchel [Dng 92] (5 lbs, 3,000 gp).

From an epic game where I played a bounty hunter.

Orb of Destruction
Very rarely, a bounty is placed not on an individual, but on an organization or even a city. In these circumstance, Vosrak uses his most powerful weapon: The Orb of Destruction.
A flawless adamantine sphere four inches in diameter with silent waves of red energy making their way across its surface, the orb pulses with power.
To use the Orb, the owner selects two targets and begins to concentrate. The user may take no other strenuous actions for those four rounds. After those four rounds end, the user need not continue concentrating, but cannot stop the Orb from activating.
After four rounds, two Earthquakes occur, each one centered on one of the two buildings.
Also, each round the sphere is held after the first four, every metal and stone item (including walls) within 900' from either building takes 120 points of damage as from a maximized Great Shout spell.
The next round, each building is affected by two Meteor Swarms.
The round after that, two Storms of Vengeance appear, centered on each of the buildings. The Orb's user does not need to concentrate on the Storms, they automatically lasts for 10 rounds.
When the Storms dissipate, four elder elementals appear as though called by Summon Monster IX. A Fire Elemental, an Earth Elemental, an Air Elemental and a Water Elemental. They attack any living thing near the former buildings, and will attack structures if no living thing is present. They last for 40 rounds before disappearing.
All spells are cast at level 20, and have a range of 1000'.

I will have to add more later but I have always liked my Gloves of the Weapon Mastery. Basically they are a set of gloves that have the Wieldskill spell in them set to weapon proficiencies. Give them 5-10 uses per day that are use activated. Any time you wield a weapon in combat you are not proficient with, wieldskill goes off giving you proficency with that weapon. The spell last for 1 minute so that is 10 rounds of combat. You can mix in the Gloves of the Balanced Hands from MoF if you are interested in dual weilding (plus give the gloves an + enchancement to dex to make sure you meet TWF and ambidex dex requirements). In addition it never hurts to make both gloves with the Gloves of Storing properties from the DMG. So basically you are proficient with any weapon you pick up, and you can store/retrieve it with a free action.

The main reason I made these gloves was we would always find neat magic weapons of a type of weapon no one could wielded. I did not include the price because it depends if you are playing 3.0 or 3.5, but the basic 5-10 uses of wieldskill castings a day are really cheap.

... but I was a positive energy lich; with limitations (the research was a full 1/4 of the campaign).

***ADD folks, skip to the bottom...***

The story behind it was that I was a human from a forest that was the battleground of two countries that bordered it. So they were fighting the 'glorious' fight, but on land that didn't matter to them, a raiding party spelled the end of my mother (pops had already died as a conscript). All I had left was my younger brother, so I survived as best I could (1 level of rogue) for both of us; we got old enough whereas he joined the resistance (against both countries). So I left to pursue enough power to bring peace back to our homeland (I started taking levels of wizard). This was 3.0 when only the core books were out. Eighteen levels later (Rogue 1/ Wizard 8/Artificer 10 [a PrC that got bonus item creation feats and +1 caster levels {think Incantatrix}]), I went on a quest for a god of magic (True Neutral) and brokered a deal for the 'afterlife' I was seeking. It turned out that to balance the amount of positive energy I'd take on, I have to channel it through a number of living things that weren't creatures. So after all was said and done with a few (three) highly dangerous rituals, and having the party six-handedly stall both entire armies for a week so I could perform them. I ended up with an entire forest as my phylactery. I only had a physical body when I needed one, and the trees on the border were effectively awakened as my sentinels (I could spend XP to awaken trees in the forest). Turns out the consort of the god of magic was the god of nature (natural tangible things/unnatural intangible things; opposites attract) so I had to spend the rest of eternity defending a forest (it was my existence) from destruction; and it was my character goal (get the war out of my woods).

***For the ADD people:***

In summation, the best magical item I ever made was a phylactery that happened to be an entire forest.

P.S. My last (20th) level was a level of Druid.

Here is a nice one for a wizard that wants to annoy Mystra (unless you happen to be Elminister) and make the sorcerer feel like a chump:

Elminister's scales of balance tipping: Command word-activated Mage's lucubration (50,450 gp). Yes, I can now pretend that I'm a Staff of Fireballs.

where's that spell from?

My favorite I ever made was a little stylish gargoyle doorknocker that could cast Mordenkien's Magnificent Mansion 1/day. best in game money ever spent =)....

other than a giant barrel specially constructed filled with alchemistfire and oil and sealed wax paper fire trapped bundles of black powder all shrunk down and shot into a throne room of a BBEG decimating the entire throne rooms and the BBEG ( the guy had a second form in true video game RPG style and i kinda figured and since we couldn't one shot kill it I figured my DM would let me get my BIG BOMB fix out of the way)

my new favorite magical items are magical traps and figuring out how to build modular magical traps to load onto animated objects as mobile weapons platforms. its really cool making force net launchers and spider shaped construsts with flame and acid cannons. LOL

A fairly cheap, yet very nice item in a campaign using the Eberron material is a ring that has daily uses of the personal weapon augmentation spell from the Eberron core book.

Sure it has a long casting time to activate, but if you are a rogue sneaking around, it never hurts to scout the place out, find out where the bad guys are, and more importantly, what race they are, then hide somewhere for a minute to use the ring to put a <insert bad guy race here>Bane effect on your dagger before you leap out of the shadows to sneak attack. Or put the bane effect on a shortbow and rapid shot a pair of arrows from within 30' to get a nice sniper attack. Either way, the bane effect makes the rogue much more efficient in taking out the bad guys quickly and quietly.

How much it costs depends on how often you want to use the spell, but 3-4 times a day will get most rogues through a day of adventuring in my experience. Make the item something else that takes up an item slot if you don't want to waste a ring slot. If you are playing in the Eberron setting, it should be fairly simple to find a mid level House Cannith artificer to make this for you by the time your character has several thousand GP to spare.

*sigh*

Personal Weapon Enhancement is an /infusion/ and not a spell.
It cannot be made into an item.
Thank you.

oops.

I didn't read the artificer rules too closely, as I was playing a rogue. However, in that case, our PC artificer has made a couple of items that aren't legal then, and our DM let it slide. Damm, and I really liked that ring... :weep:

I prefer the Instant fortess. Sure, it costs 20k more, but you can use it as a weapon.

And you can use it as many times in a day as you like.

Well, it is legal by the rules. It just isn't legal by Keith Baker ;)

A fine line, but you'd only know if you read a certain thread on the Eberron boards.

Truth. It is supposed to be in the next Eberron erratta, though.

(and a shameless plus for Eberron, and the sucess of the setting search. Not only did Eberron bring us a fun, andstrong 1-20 class, and a pretty well balanced and useful set of new crunch, it's designer is actually both avaliable AND willing to answer questions about unclear points in the book. Kudos.)

Now, for items. It's nothing truly powerful, but in 3.0, I'd take the travel cloak, and give it endure elements (all five elements) and make it a cloak of resistance. Sometimes a small bag of holding in it as well. Adventurer's Cloaks were very popular in our party. :D

I like one item I made.

A Ring of Continous Prestidigitation...

I never actually saw one used in a game, but I think the funniest idea for an item I heard of was a tongue stud with Continual Flame cast on it. It was for a barbarian, so he could look like gouts of flame were shooting out of his mouth when he raged. :D

Another pseudo-magic item favorite of mine is any large object shrunk with the Shrink Item spell that I can drop on people from a great height.

Most of the actually useful custom magic items I've used in games weren't especially creative. They all either allowed you to cast a certain spell once per day (Mind Blank is a favorite of mine...), or just combined the properties of two existing magic items, like my Vest of Trollish Health (+6 enhancement to Con and regenerate as a Pearly White Ioun Stone).

In a 2ed game, one of my buddies had a sword that he had magically bonded with him at an early level and it rose in power as he did until when he dies, part of his essence will enter the sword making it an intelligent item. This is the rough 3.5 conversion.

Varaguard
CG +5 Anarchaic Defending Longsword; Int 11, Wis 14, Cha 18, Ego 17
The +5 bonus is flat out applyed as both an AC bonus and a bonus to hit and damage(no fluctuating between AC and hit/dmg). It also gives a +2 bonus on all saves. The sword has the word Defender engraved down the blade.

The funny thing is that Varaguard was CG to the core but his best friend was a LG knight and will always talk about there adventures, and as such doesnt have an aversion to lawful charecters of good heart(to an extent).

A fun but horrendously overpriced item (something for a DM to give out and wait for the PCs to figure out the full extent of it's abilities):

Shield of weaponmastery: This wooden shield will become any weapon of any material on command, granting full proficiency and medium BAB. If formed into a missile weapon, it will magically create metaline ammunition (Skillful [CA] Bashing +1 Serren [BoED] Light shield + Everchanging blade [Und] + Quiver of Anariel [WotC], 109,153 gp).

I haven't actually ever seen this thing in use. I was just trying to take the Everchanging blade to it's logical conclusion.

I kinda played researcher in one campaign. Not that we were having much free time, but I researched few things:

Obscuring mist+ray of enfeeblement=potion that can be thrown, lets out a mist for a minute, which weakens everyone inside as per spell. Was kinda fun for low level, and even got to use few times

Glitterdust, improved with cone and put into a spray can :) Quite a good thing for blinding enemies and showing invisible guys. Used twice in campaign

Magic mouth+lightning bolt= head, that hangs about a month while slowly dripping electricity, but can be discharged with command word. I used it in our most critical areas as backup. Never needed to use though.

Arcane arbalet, added blinking+true strike = It was really great. Striking through stone/metal, it was used as grenade launcher when attacking enemies entrenched. Later sold for some 50,000 because we were leaving material planes for a long time.

Well, I imagine most druid players wrestle with the inability to talk in animal form, my particular druid handled this by crafting Esk's Torc of Beast Speech (cue music). It could be created by manipulating a Tongues spell, or a specifically-researched Speak As Animals spell (sort of Speak With Animals in reverse). Anyway, at the time I mixed in the abilities of the Wilding Clasp and voila, a pretty torc that I could wear in animal form, which allowed me to communicate with the group. Later on I added +Wisdom to it, which was great because that's tied to the neck slot anyway, and I didn't have to worry about losing spells in wild shape because my enhancement item wouldn't meld.

Just last week I almost lost it to a Rust Dragon in Acheron though!

Oh yeah, here is one that an NPC True Necromancer in my game has:

The Lich King's Scepter is a piece of obsidian, crafted to look like a skeletal forearm which is grasping a skull with rubies for eyes. It functions as a Rod of Undead Mastery (+1 HD/level of undead controlled via spells) with the abilities of a Scepter of the Netherworld (+3 to level for Rebuking) and Night Stick (+4 rebuke attempts per day) added. Total price 34,750 gold.

I'm thinking of adding a few other similiarly themed items in the game, and saying that if you have them all then you gain additional abilities.

Well...

For stupidly-useful cheap items, there's an item I gave one of my players that allows a divine spellcaster to use the Create Water orison at will, much like the 1000gp Mage Hand at will amulet in the DMG.

There was a rod in Neverwinter Nights that allowed Ray of Frost at will as well...incredibly useful item, that. Unlimited Cantrip items are often excellent deals.

This isn't quite a Magic Item, but a Demonologist NPC IMC also has a rather interesting strategy...he uses his Charm Demon ability when he encounters a hostile demon, orders it to possess him, and casts the BOVD spells that prevent it from taking him over and prevent it from leaving. Not only do paladins nearly spontaneously combust when Detecting Evil and seeing the hundreds of hit dice of Tanar'ri he carries around, but nobody in their right mind would EVER want to kill him. He carries a Ring of Counterspells loaded with Greater Dispel Magic at all times. Why bother SUMMONING a demon when you can charm one of the ones rattling around in your head and release it to do your bidding with a targeted Dispel Magic?

Item of Unlimited Cure Light Wounds (2000gp) or Cure Minor Wounds (1000gp). Nothing like unlimited healing between fights without bothering the cleric or using his limited spells per day.

I don't remember the issue, but one of the dragon magazines (older, like 290ish) had some armor or a shirt that whenever the wearer took damage it triggered a casting of cure light wounds, when I looked at the price (something like 2500gp) I couldn't figure out how they priced it, just some ad hoc DM ruling type thing. It was basically fast healing 1d8 on rounds you were damaged.
