Best Dragon Disciple build (!) [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hopefully this will put the debate to rest. I boldly claim that this is the best possible Dragon Disciple build that takes 10 levels of the class while still hitting +16 base attack by level 20.

Minimum attributes: Int 16 (it is possible to do with 14 int but you will have to waste 4 more points crossclassing Knowledge: Arcana), Wis 15, Cha 12, race human

I am only going to list the relevant abilities of the build.

1 Rgr1 Track, WF: Greatsword, Alertness, 4 ranks in Search, Spot, Survival, Move, Hide, and Knowledge (nature)*
2 Hex1 4 sp cc'd into Spot & Survival, 2 sp into K (arc)
3 Hex2 ditto on skills, Combat Casting
4 Hex3 ditto on skills
5 Hex4 ditto on skills.. you now have 8 ranks in Spot, Survival, & K (arc). You have wasted a total of 8 skill points cross-classing.
6 Nentyar Hunter Lightning Reflexes, remaining skills needed for WW
7 Windwalker
8 WW
9 WW open feat
10 WW You now have level 5 spells from the awesomely powerful NH list. Your caster level is low, but it is going to be low in virtually all DD builds.
11-20 Dragon Disciple (make sure you take something other than white or silver, otherwise your cold resist from WW is wasted)

*Assumes windwalker prereqs in 3.5 are changed to 5 ranks of survival and 3 ranks of knowledge(nature).

You finish with full NH spell progression, added spells known from Air and Travel, 7 bonus *5th* level spells from DD (slots you can use to memorize lower level spells if you so choose), +16 base attack, very good saves, and all the goodies from Dragon Disciple. You are a good fighter (good hp and offense), have decent stealth/detection skills, and have direct damage, healing, combat buffing, and movement spells.

This character would make an excellent solo adventurer that is VERY likely to be allowed by a DM. (unlike the cheesy ur-priest/nard/anyspell/spellfilch/etc symbiotic halfogre/puppeteer builds we've been developing.)

You can substitute Master of Shrouds or Hospitaler for Windwalker, but I seriously doubt a DM would allow either of these PrCs to be combined with ranger/NH and Hexblade, respectively. Fist of Raziel doesn't work because of alignment and a missing caster level.

Technically speaking, the above build isn't the best because it is possible to make a better character using Ur-Priest, but I suspect a sane DM wouldn't allow it. Just for discussion's sake, though, how's this:

Ftr1/Hex4/Ur-Priest2/Master of Shrouds3/Dragon Disciple10.

Thematically, this build works, because fighter is flavorless and Hex+UP+MoS are all evil. The stat requirements of this build are lower too, allowing you to put more into str and con in a point buy. You also don't have to waste anything cross-classing. However, I don't think this build will hold up over the long run because it is just a matter of time before Master of Shrouds is revised (ie, nerfed).

** Special thanks to Funny Slaughter, for giving me the idea to try NH in a DD build in the first place.

Special thanks to Funny Slaughter, for giving me the idea to try NH in a DD build in the first place.

thanks for the credit, i think you did a very good work realizing this.

there wont be something like a best build imo, the most powerful was surely the ur-priest getting all bonus-spells for his 9th level spells.

this one is very elegant, cool that you managed the double-tightness on feats and skillpoints.

a really pretty build! still impressed :)

Mmm... I could swear I have seen this build before. It was from Snow Savant, on a DD thread not so long ago...

Edit: Ah yes, it is here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179323) Very similar but not identical.

Sorry guys, she beated you to it. :ayyyy!:

who said something about a challenge?
i didnt read snows build, normally i am not too interested in dragon disciple characters, but with LordShade making a thread i can spare a chunk of time.

advancing NH with WW is a bit better imo, but if there are credits to give i dont have a problem with snow getting them, maybe she bakes some cookies then :smirk:
