| chaos_bane11-06-06, 06:19 PM | yeah ok, i just done raping the party with an adult red dragon(cr15). they just managed to kill him in the end. but honestly, what would you do if you were a dragon with all knowlegde of the party available before fighting. In my case the dragon had charmed a fight, mage, and cleric party to help him retrieve the red dragon orb from the pc party. used the npcs to tax the pcs resources, then cast benefitial spells, like haste, stone skin, protection elements cold, and such before engaging the party with breath weapon and hasted full atk option. is there anything or something else this dragon could have done to destroy the party? setting was within the slums district to a port city. the dragons fear kept most of the guards and townsfolk away, those that passed were too few to make a big help so they helped save citizens from burning buildings and the rest as the pcs fought on valiantly. yeah so, what would you have done as a dragon? |
| ninjarabbit11-06-06, 06:22 PM | The dragon should have made the party come to him. Lure the party into the dragon's trap-filled lair and have an invisible cleric cohort heal him as the fight rageson. |
| Arem_K11-06-06, 07:07 PM | I have actually found that the best tactics for dragons involve taking them out of the lair. A dragon in its lair is just a big super tough lizard. Out of its lair it can fly and usually has a significant movement advantage against the party. Whenever my DM throws a dragon at us, we can pretty much expect it to do the whole strafing with dragon's breath thing. Usually it has a back up strategy of the whole wraithstrike/power attack thing. High level ones do the I-cast-antimagic-field-on-myself and start strafing thing or the I-become-invisible and start strafing thing. |

| FiestFan11-06-06, 09:55 PM | I can't claim credit for this, but the best use of Dragon tactics I ever heard of was a Blue Dragon: Party comes into the known lair of an ancient Blue Dragon, who is awake and waiting for them. Party and Blue Dragon engage in near-epic struggle, with the Blue using its physical attacks, breath weapon, and some spell-like abilities to seriously tax the party before they are able to defeat it. As the Blue Dragon dies, it slowly fades out, to the sound of quiet chuckling.... "Well done, mortals,"comes from behind them. Looking for the sound, the party sees the real Blue Dragon, who had controlled the Illusionary one the entire time from the safety of a camoflaged niche in the lair.... |
| chaos_bane11-08-06, 05:54 PM | wow, that blue dragon thing is an excellent idea. thanks alot for that one. i personally don't like to use a dragon's lair because if the dragon needs to retreat and he's already home, where's he gonna go? plus i think if he does lose would'nt he want to rob the pcs of his hoard by hiding it? the cohort idea for the dragon is pretty nice, i havent really thought of that one either. i kinda had the feeling like dragons feel to proud and arrogant to need human help. but i suppose if he saw the human as a tool much like humans see summons as one thats kinda kool. question... can you chain spell greater magic weapon? i was wondering so the dragon could magic weapon his claws, bite, wings, tail slap in one turn. or whichever spell buffs natural weapons. on a side note, what negates the druid PrC shifter class from changing? would anti magic field do that? i have a pc that has the PrC and he rapes almost everything i throw at the party with whatever he can turn into. |
| Radijs11-08-06, 05:56 PM | A good one indeed. I also heard one of a black dragon who polymorphed a kobold into a copy of itself and threw that at the party before coming out himself. |
| Seeker of Truth11-08-06, 06:29 PM | can you chain spell greater magic weapon? Yes i was wondering so the dragon could magic weapon his claws, bite, wings, tail slap in one turn. or whichever spell buffs natural weapons. He could use greater magic fang for that, but not greater magic weapon on a side note, what negates the druid PrC shifter class from changing? would anti magic field do that? Yes |
