best ECL+1 for a sorcerer [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm taking an ECL+1 level adjustment for my sorcerer/druid/arcane hierophant who will be specializing in breath weapons. (Yeah, I know, delaying caster progression isn't optimal, but this decision is firm and final.)

Since the character will be wildshaped most of the time, what templates would work best? The only one I can come up with so far is Fey-touched for the Charisma bonus.

Edit: Someone mentioned the "Magic Blooded" template. What's that do?

Source Materials: All WotC D&D books + Dragon Mazaine.
Starting Level: 5th (will be using UA buyoff)
Attributes: High stat-rolling method

Thanks in advance for your help

THe first Dragonlance book is WotC, and it has White Dragonspawn, which is THE BEST +1ECL for a sorcerer, in that it adds a level of sorcerer casting, not to mention giving you a breath weapon.

Not to mention being the permanent thrall to an evil white dragon.

If you have to take ECL +1, might as well go Aasimar. +2 charisma for sorcerer spells and +2 wisdom for druid spells.

I have to suggest that you dump this idea in favor of going Wizard/Druid however, since then you get 9th level arcane and divine after mixing in MT levels. If you aren't going to get to 20th level then I suppose it doesn't matter much.

Catfolk from Races of the Wild. +2 cha, +4 dex, and +1 natural armor go a long way towards your survival.

Don't forget Catfolk's 40ft movement speed which is good for running away really quickly, another useful survival trait.

Personally, if you're allowed the level adjustment buyoff rules, I'd consider actually going above +1LA. +2LA opens-up a wealth of possibilities such-as Phrenic (XPH, quite powerful due to how Psi-likes work plus it gives you SR and the ability to attain psionic focus which is useful for all casters) or Half-Fey (Fiend Folio, also featured here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a) with a LA progression, lots of interesting spell-likes, flight, and immunity to an entire scool of magic). Both give a big +4 charisma, meaning that even though you may be 1 level of spells behind (before LA buyoff) your save DCs are 2 higher for a net increase of 1 save DC.

Another idea is to tack some other template on-top-of the +0LA aasimar (from the aforementioned site (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a)) to get the +2 Cha and Outsider type without the nasty +1LA. Outsider type is GODLIKE for casters with access to polymorph and similar spells.

Bah roleplaying requirements.

Your best option barring whitedragonspawn is the 0ecl version of the Aasimar from wotc web site and the Magic Blooded template.

Youl be 0 ecl and have a +4 cha

Magic Blooded is from Dragon.

There is also the deathtouched template in Dragon. It grants a +4 Cha, -2 Con. Another one would be the draconic template (Draconomicon). It grants +2 Str/Cha/Con. Like P33KAJ3W mentioned above you could also tack on the magic blooded template for another +2 Cha. :)

X-Codes, it specifically states that some Dragonspawn have free will. Check out the second-to-last paragraph on the left side of page 222 of the Dragonlance Campaign Setting. Thus, it is not a necessity that you be such a thrall.

If anything, the DM should be happy, as it pretty much mandates that he can stick a powerful White Dragon in the campaign somewhere and 'reveal' it to be the one who created said character. Now the party does have a problem. ;)

The White Dragonspawn gives a +1 effective Sorc level for spells castable, spells known, etc. It gives 3 natural attacks, flight, almost as much natural armor as the armor bonus of full plate, and a breath weapon that... unfrotunately... only does set damage (really small, think Greatsword) with twice a 'standard' reload for a breath.
The primary drawback is that you are now of the Ice subtype, which while making you immune to cold (yummy) also means you take lots of extra damage from fire, certainly the most commonly encountered element of damage. That and the Death Throes (which invariably leave no useful body behind) can be serious drawbacks, especially at lower levels where one failed save will result in you dying and then exploding, inflicting even more damage on a party that--if it survives--will certainly have no access to the higher level magics necessary to bring you back to life.

Is it still worth only a +1 ECL, though? No way, it should be like +2 or +3. Is it good for a character choice anyway? Yep. Especially if you do something nutty like also be a Dragonborn (the White Dragon attempted to 'suvert' Bahamut's will... unfortunately, the created spawn retained its free will--there you go, you have an in-character explanation for the odd game methods for arriving at your choice). Go with the prestige class or feat that lets you convert spell slots into a breath weapon, and you'll be the Dentine Dragon... with two natural breath weapons, one 'artificial' breath weapon (via the Dragonbreath spell), and one pseudo-breath (the Draconic Breath feat/class ability), your breath is always clean and minty-fresh. ;) Of course, you're also one Hit Die less than normal, which might can be problems later (slowed feat/stat progression, not to mention skill cap being 1 lower) for applying to prestige classes and whatnot, but still a damn fine combination.

Can anyone supply me (and the original poster) with the numbers of the Dragon magazines the Magic-Touched and Deathtouched templates are in?

Thanks, SigmaJargon!

Oh, continuing the "Breath Weapon Insanity", there's also a Draconic graft in Races of the Dragon called Metabolic Fire that can be used to grant you another breath weapon. It's like 56k, though, and only does a set damage, but at this point you'll have so many different ways of coughing up elemental death you'll be too busy to do much else. ;)

Dromites have a lot of nice (general) qualities about them. And they get +2 cha, and c'mon! They're bugmen!
