| Dark Elf01-14-05, 05:20 AM | Alright, so I'm a sucker for elves (should be evident by my moniker) and thus I thought - saying you used the core rules, and couldn't have more than ten levels (just like in ToEE), what elf build would have the greatest killing potential? I guess what I want is the cheesiest build possible, using only the core 3.5 elf, and the classes and feats available to ToEE. Note: Since archery sucks in ToEE, don't bother with archer builds. Thanks. :) |
| PaTRiXXX01-14-05, 05:36 AM | Well in core books only, elves are well suited for ranger archers. Their bonus skills and bonus dex go very well with a ranger specialized in archery (well, you know, it's called elven ranger and not halfling ranger or half-orc ranger for a reason). |
| Dark Elf01-14-05, 05:57 AM | Yes, I know. :) But since archery isn't such a good idea in ToEE, I was wondering what really would maximize their potential besides archery. I really should had stated that in my original post. Sorry. |
| Wizu01-14-05, 06:20 AM | Bard. Full 10 levels of bard. And this comes from a guy who did that, ended in level 12ish. Area control with whip, ranged supportee if needed via bow, melee awesomeness by pointy metal stick usually known as rapier. My stats were 14 18 12 14 10 18 at level 1, pumbing charisma all the way. Aligment chaotic good (You-want-to-be-cg!). Feats were like combat expertise, improved trip, improved disarm, weapon finesse, leadership. It was a blast, I had the priviledge of being the guy who the party couldnt live without. Partys face, healer, scout, secret door finder, whip 'em and strip 'em dude and general useful guy. It all became twice as tasty when I took a female elven companion with the girlfriend class, healer. From that point on I prolly could have soloed the whole module, or then I was just on a powertrip. ^^;; Truth to be told, I dont really remember why I choose to be an elf. 'Spose it was the "they just are a bit... girlish, they cant help it" argument. Thumbs up for pure barddom! |
| Dain01-14-05, 07:17 AM | Wizard - I would go wizard. Elves aren't that bad wizards - the bonus on dex is useful, and the longbow is good in the low levels. The penalty on con is a pain, but it always is, no matter what class you choose as an elf. So something like Wizard 7/Loremaster 3. Or Wizard 10 if you don't think you get enough payoff for meeting the requirements of Loremaster in the 3 levels you'll get. |
| DNDGuroMaster01-14-05, 07:27 AM | being a ranger is actually really effective in TOEE. i should know cuz i played a party of all elf rangers and i made it to level 10 quite easily. a good idea is to have the mage cast Greater Invisiblity on you and then you can go around shooting everybody and never get attacked, also have the mage cast Haste on your so you get an extra attack. |
| Wizu01-14-05, 07:32 AM | Read my lips; can-ranger-cast-tashas-hideous-laughter? Problem solved! And even as wizards can cast that fabled spell, you will have access to it as level 2 bard! So that eliminates like... meh... what, 60-80% oh ToEE monsters? Do the hippity hop, diggity dig! Dig the bard! Baaard! Edited; as a sidenote, wizards+ToEE+scrolls=combination that will never happen. Ever. Yes, I watched the level 11 wizard cry at his four level five spells and two sixth ones. He would have been better off as sorc. ^^;; |
| PaTRiXXX01-14-05, 08:33 AM | Bard isn't a bad choice if you want to play an elf but it would be better as an archer and you said you don't want an archer. I mean no offense to Wizu but his view on the bard is waaaaay too optimistic and the stats are way to high for the standard 32 point buy. There are 2 great threads about bards in the CO board that explain everything about them (but they are a bit outdated with the arrival of the Complete ...... series), just try a search and you will find them. The bard can be a great skill user with the addition of his spells and can offer good ranged support when combat arrives. Finally you can "save from death until the slow cleric has time to heal" your party because with tumble and light armor you will be able to get to you injured companions faster that the cleric, you just need to CLW them so they don't die. In extreme conditions you just can try some ilusions against the enemy to slow them and get some time while you run. Or alter self in a high AC form to suck some damage while the barbarian power attacks them to death. |
| Wizu01-14-05, 09:25 AM | Wasnt standard pointbuy, was rolled and then added racial modi from middle aged. And then I died once at first level, meh... Curse you puny spider and criticals! |
| Lilt01-14-05, 10:27 AM | Maybe consider an arcane trickster build? High dex comes in handy, as do the elven weapon proficiencies, search bonuses, and wizard favoured class. Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Wizard +2 or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Rogue +2 (8d6 sneak-attack) or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Archmage 2 or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Loremaster 2 or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Thaumaturgist 2 or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Shadowdancer 2 or Rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10/Wizard +1/Rogue +1 (BAB 11 total for 3rd attack) Trap monkey, 9th level spells (or other abilities), What more do you want? |

While you're right that elves (more grey than high) make for good tricksters you're missing the 1-10 level thing. ATs start to shine at about 12th level, and he's playing 1-10. |
| Dark Elf01-14-05, 03:09 PM | I'm also playing without any prestige classes whatsoever. Just the eleven basic classes. :) |
| Eidolon Faer01-14-05, 07:24 PM | Cleric of Obad Hai with Elemental domains and a tricked-out Charisma. |
| Kastalyn01-14-05, 07:39 PM | 5/5 rogue ranger. Bonus Ranger feats were geared towards two-weapon fighting. Other feats taken were weapon finese, two-weapon defense, Weapon of choice shortsword, Improved Two-weapon fighting (since he was never going to see 11+ level). For racial enemies focusing on human is a good choice. Another good option for an elf would be rogue 10 levels. For feats Two-weapon fighting, Weapon finese, two-weapon defense, Improved two-weapon fighting. I tend to like ranger and rogue for elves since being able to boost their search is nice for finding secret doors just by walking past them :). Kastalyn |
