Quick Question:

I'm looking for suggestions on the best One-handed, Finessable, Martial Weapon.

Which one strikes you as the best, and where can I find it?

Thanks

Rapier can be used one-handed, Spiked Chain is Exotic. Rapier might be my best bet, though. Thanks.

Any others?

Elven thinblade/lightblade if you want to TWF. You can play an elf and get that racial exotic weapon proficency to get weapon prof for both. (complete warrior)

Oh, that is very good. Unfortunately, I'm playing a Human, and though I have Martial Weapon Proficiency (thanks to Swashbuckler), I don't have enough feats to nab EWP. I want to eventually use a Mithral shield to help with a low AC, so I'm looking for the best possible one-hander that can benefit from Insightful Strike.

It is quite a bit dependent on your build. Are you dual wielding? Some good ones are:

Katana, with one level of Iajistu master
Scimitar with one level of dervish
Dagger with several PRC's
Dagger, shortsword, or maybe kukri if dual wielding without oversized two weapon fighting
All by themselves, for one-handed I would say, as already mentioned, rapier for martial and elven thinblade for exotic.

If you post your build or build ideas it would be easier to help.

Haha... I'm reluctant to post my build, as it's far from optimized (not a problem with the group I play with), nowhere near complete, and would probably attract all sorts unwanted suggestions. This is the Char-Op board, after all. :D

That being said:

Human

Str 10
Dex 13
Con 12
Int 18
Wis 14
Cha 10

Two flaws at level one.

1. Ranger 1 (Track, Favoured of the Companions, Alertness, Dodge, Mobility)
2. Swashbuckler 1
3. Swashbuckler 2 (Endurance)
4. Swashbuckler 3
5. Bloodhound 1
6. Stalker of Kharash 1 (Elusive Target)
7. SoK 2
8. SoK 3
9. SoK 4 (Raptor School)
10. SoK 5
11. SoK 6
12. Bloodhound 2 (Improved Favoured Enemy)
13. BH 3
14. BH 4
15. BH 5 (Darkstalker)
16. BH 6
17. BH 7
18. BH 8 (Yet to be determined)
19. BH 9
20. BH 10

But again, I'm mostly looking for a good one-handed, finessable weapon.

Level 1, I guess. It's just another character concept that I wanted to put into a build. I've got hundereds of them floating around; every time I imagine something I try to stat it and flesh it out, and then if I get the chance, actually play it a bit.

If I ever DM a game, I'll be set for NPCs.

Could. But I do want him to be human, and if I put in EWP, it'll bump the rest of the feats up. It would be nice to have those feats at a lower level.

Looks like rapier is the best way to go. Too bad they're so dorky.

Use a wooden light mace, and get someone to cast Spikes on it. Something made of wood is always the best. :D

Spikes is handy enough. But it's not /that/ handy. Especially not after the Spell Compendium. Off the top of my head: Cutlass is a decent light weapon (martial) if it's not as nice as the rapier, it is at least, slashing. Kukri's are cool, and one makes a good backup/utility weapon. Rapier is probably the best finessible one handed weapon, without a feat.

I'd strongly consider the kusari-gami though (DMG, Asian Weapons) if you don't mind spending an EWP. It's a one hand, light weapon, with reach. And it can be used for trips and disarms at range, and seems like you could definately fit it into your concept. And it's wicked cool. Might take it at 9, and either bump them rest of the feasts back, or else replace raptor school. Only if you don't mind spending for an EWP, though.

Did they nerf Spikes in the Spell Compendium or something?

Well, lets see what the new brambles does ...

Cleric/Druid 3
Duration: 1rd/lvl
A wooden weapon that blah blah blah gains +2 enhancement bonus to hit, +CL (up to +10) enhancement bonus to damage, and threat range doubles. (not stackable with keen or imp crit). Does piercing and bludgeoning damage.

So shorter duration (MUCH), and the damage add is now typed (enhancement) meaning it doesn't stack with anything the weapon may already have. In general, nerfing the heck out of the spell (Except for divine metamagic/persistant cheaters, of course, who lose only the ability to stack it with GMW)

best finessable weapon is something like the Feycraft Shortsword. It only deals 1d4 damage, but you do not need to waste a feat. It is automatically using your dex.

Best 1 handed finessable weapon would have to be the Feycraft bastard sword I think, simply because it deals 1d8 and doesn't take exotic weapon proficiency.

Stormwrack has the stats for the cutlass. essentially, it's a martial, light slashing weapon. d6, 19-20/x2, and +2 on disarm checks.

I do have a copy of Complete Warrior, but I couldn't find this. Do you have a page number?

Thanks

If I don't have EWP (Bastard Sword), it is not considered a one-handed weapon, and therefore is not made finessable by Feycraft.

I think.

Am I wrong?

For your build, I would say that the humble rapier is best. You will be depending on favored enemy, precision strike etc. for the majority of your damage. It would also be best to add energy damage to you rapier as soon as possible. A perennial favorite is the hellblade, which is simply a +1 vicious flaming shocking corrosive weapon -- deals +5d6 damage per hit.

Very true. However, if I can pick up a finessable Feycraft longsword, that might end up being even better. Less crit. possibilities, but more base damage.

Fey craft lowers the weapons damage dice by 1 size and makes it finessable so a fey craft longsword would do 1d6 19-20/x2 and be finessable. Essentially its a rapier without the cool crit range. Just use a rapier until you can afford or find a sunblade. Or see if your dm will determine the cost of the sunblades weapon handiling altering magic effect and allow you to apply it to your weapon of choice.

It's in Complete Adventurer and after the errata only gives +1 AC.

Unfortunately, it's exotic. Also, I believe it only deals subdual damage.

Heads up, Kusari-gama(OA) cannot be used as a reach weapon while being wieldet in one hand and still being able to strike adjecent foes. :weep:

The Kawanaga(OA) on the other hand can be used as a reach weapon in one hand while still being able to strike adjecent foes. Low damage though, would be great as an offhand weapon mixed with the "mage slayer" feat.

The Warfan(OA) is also an interesting weapon, great as an offhand weapon if you plan on going TWF. With a good chance you can fool your enemies and get a +4 attack bonus first round.

Is there an update for the Whipdagger? I mean, why waste EWP on whip, when you can waste it on Whipdagger? :D
pyro_cat

03-05-06, 02:22 PM
All those OA weapons are quite good, and definately what I would take if I opted for EWP.

I'm still unclear on whether I could use a Feycraft bastard sword without penalty and finesse it. Anyone know?

The 3.5 DMG says nothing about being unable to use the Kusari-gama at any point.

Kusari-Gama: This small sickle is attached to a length of chain. A kusari-gama is an exotic weapon that has reach. It can strike opponents 10 feet away. In addition, unlike other weapons with reach, it can be used against an adjacent foe. It can be used in all respects like a spiked chain (see page 99 in the Player's Handbook) for trip attacks, disarming other foes, and using its wielder's Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier in attack rolls.

Yep. It's easily my favorite one handed exotic weapon. Expecially for a sort of bounty hunter build, the idea of tossing the chain out, and reeling someone in is just awesome. Not to mention swinging stunts.

Must have been tired as hell last night, Im sure I read the description of the Kusari-gama twice... But this morning, when reading it again, I can see that Im totally wrong. Need some ranks in Knowledge [Raw].

Cheerios.

I'm still unclear on whether I could use a Feycraft bastard sword without penalty and finesse it. Anyone know?I'm not familiar with Feycraft, but the bastard sword is technically a one-handed weapon that you can wield in two hands as a martial weapon. In other words, for what you want it requires an EWP.

I've been looking at Whip-Daggers for a rogue build.
15' reach, 1D6/x2, exotic, no threat range, finessable.
Trouble is, it's classed as a ranged weapon, so watch for those AOO's.
