| SoulLord06-18-05, 11:26 AM | for rogues to be able to SA they either need to hide or need a flanking partner most of the time. but those tend to die rather quickly. so what is the best flanking partner for a low level rogue? 1.- wand of summon monster (badger) 2.- grey bag 3.- rogue henchman 4.- dwarven barbarian All it has to do is survive while the rogue SA his opponent bonus points for high mobility so it can go into a flanking position the better. |
| Rashomon06-18-05, 11:44 AM | A druid with a wolf. The wolf attacks and knocks the guy down, so the rogue gets ANOTHER +4 to hit the fallen guy. This is of course while the druid is whacking the fallen foe with his shillelagh. |
| Axegrrl06-18-05, 12:21 PM | so what is the best flanking partner for a low level rogue? 1.- wand of summon monster (badger) 2.- grey bag 3.- rogue henchman 4.- dwarven barbarian The wand is out. It's a first-level spell, so the critter stays for only one round. So at best, you can try to SA every other round. The grey bag of tricks gives you a critter that stays for 10 minutes, but they're very easily killed. You've got a 90% chance of getting a critter which is CR 1/4 or less. So I'd say one of the other two, if you're limited to this exact list, and which of those I dunno... why a dwarf barbarian? If you aren't limited to this list, I'd go w/ the druid/wolf combo. |
| Axle_Steelcat06-18-05, 12:32 PM | buy a war dog or 2, put ranks in animal stuff. |
| Baneslayer06-18-05, 01:31 PM | War Dog + Animal Handling really is the best way to go. 150GP + some game time (usually done between sessions) and you got a fairly buff buddy. |
| rilem06-18-05, 03:29 PM | Any hardy PC with the Great Teamwork ancestor feat (OA 3.5 version). Effectively gives the flanker ability (see Elocator), letting them flank from odd angles. |
| carnivore06-18-05, 03:46 PM | how about: FLANKING When making a melee attack, you get a +2 flanking bonus if your opponent is threatened by a character or creature friendly to you on the opponent’s opposite border or opposite corner. When in doubt about whether two friendly characters flank an opponent in the middle, trace an imaginary line between the two friendly characters’ centers. If the line passes through opposite borders of the opponent’s space (including corners of those borders), then the opponent is flanked. Exception: If a flanker takes up more than 1 square, it gets the flanking bonus if any square it occupies counts for flanking. Only a creature or character that threatens the defender can help an attacker get a flanking bonus. Creatures with a reach of 0 feet can’t flank an opponent. train ALL animals that you get....including War dogs as was mentioned, and your mounts(War horses/war ponies/riding dogs/etc....) but remember the limitations of the animals...........certain animals have a reach of 0' and can not help to flank for more on animals and other things you can do.....look here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=436946 :D |
| Periboo06-18-05, 09:10 PM | Incorporal Wizard Familiar. With a ghost-touched weapon. Boss for flanking. But yeah, otherwise... war dogs/druid companion. |
| wotcwotcworc06-19-05, 02:38 PM | A teammate with a spiked chain and reach. |
| SoulLord06-20-05, 11:09 AM | the list was not inclusive, just ideas that I was judging. Speaking of animals it seems that for the lone rogue the war dog is the best choice at low levels. can you train this animals to fight defensively? how about to use the aid another? |
| DisposableHero_06-20-05, 11:18 AM | A marshal with the Master of Tactics (I think thats the name) minor aura grants you his charisma bonus on damage rolls when flanking within 60 feet of him. So for my money thats the best low level flanking partner, or at least a guy worth having around :D |

Yes to both, the rules are in Complete Adventurer. |
| SoulLord06-20-05, 03:16 PM | Don't have it with me right now but I assume they are handled like other tricks? and would it be worth it? to train for example a riding dog to flank while fighting defensively and using the aid another. bite +3[bite -1 ac +4] [45% chance sucess ac 18] [flank +2 aid +2 = +4] or would it be better to let it try to bite and trip your opponent? |
