| Schwarg02-23-04, 04:03 PM | Race: Half-Ogre Class: Any My roles: 18, 16, 13, 11, 10, 10 ability mods: str +6, con+2, chr -2, dex -2, & int -2 also: My dm is giving me an additional 3 ability points I can put anywhere, even on the eighteen. Starting at character level 2. I'm aware a half-ogre is overpowered by many of you. I need help deciding what to be not to discuss how overpowered it is. ---For fun I was thinking a paladin, but I'm having second thoughts. Barbarian? How should he be built. I appreciate any feedback on how to maximize this character race and roles. Thanks, Schwarg |
| baoban sith02-23-04, 04:10 PM | You can make quite a good cleric. |
| nachtmeister02-23-04, 05:22 PM | or a monk |
| pawsplay02-23-04, 05:39 PM | Expert. Take Skill Focus (basket-weaving). Well, that's my first guess, knowing what I do about your goals and the rest of the party composition. |
| mean_liar02-23-04, 06:14 PM | Cleric. You don't have the stats to be a Monk. |
| adiaven02-23-04, 06:20 PM | I would run in fear if I saw a half ogre bard coming at me. Definitely go with bard. Put the 18 and more 2 points into Cha and go from there. Good dex is useful for bards. You could even roleplay him with the most beautiful voice ever heard from an ogre... |
| Hanniball02-23-04, 06:53 PM | as i'm sure you've figured out by the above posters, you need to be a bit more specific as to what you want/need out of this character. simply saying, "here's my race/stats; what do i do now?" won't get you far. so what are you going for?...hulk smash, tactical warrior, a spellcaster...what? |
| catharz02-23-04, 07:09 PM | Play a Monk/Paladin, they'll never expect it. Dump Cha, Max Wisdom (possibly even take Feral for that), an use something like this build. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=2510617#post2510617) |
| Schwarg02-23-04, 07:19 PM | Yes, I can see some find time to type lame humor in responding a simple request. What would you build? I'm open to suggestions that are valid to good game play. I liked the idea of a playing a (variant) paladin half-ogre. But I'm unsure of my stats. I'm unsure the pluses outway the minuses. A cleric I would consider too, as well barabarian. I've never played a half-ogre. I always play humans. Let me know if that helps. -John |
| MikeN02-23-04, 08:44 PM | If Psionics is allowed, go with a Monk/Psychic Warrior design. Monk2/Psionic Warrior8/Diamond Warrior10 is nice and simple -- you can add other classes to it as you like depending upon your campaign setting and how much cheese you like. 18, 16, 13, 11, 10, 10 Str 17 Dex 14 Con 15 Int 8 Wis 18 Cha 8 I'd add two points to Str and one to con to start out, but if you want skills, you should add some to int (at the very least, you should have high tumble). Feats: Combat Reflexes and either Large and in Charge from S&F or Stand Still from the Psi Handbook will accomplish the goal of controlling space for your party, and getting improved trip (Wolf Berserker from Unreachable East sidesteps the Int/Expertise requirement) is helpful -- there are quite a few trip builds on the boards as well. Grappling is pretty decent here too, as you can use the psionic Trigger Power feat + some claw powers (claws of the vampire is nice here). Also, you can take inertial armor (psionic feat -- works like mage armor), improved inertial armor (adds two to base) as many times as you like/can, and get an item of shield self (level 1 spell in PHB) and an item of Lion's Pounce (level 2 spell from Savage Species) and you can make a combo of Psionic Charge (can turn a number of times equivalent to your dex mod during a charge) to full-attack every turn as well. I hope I wasn't too hard to read in the above paragraph but there's a few ways you can go with a psionic type. ________________ If non-psionic, try my simple build of Monk6/Shintao Monk3/Shou Disciple5/Exotic Weapon Master1/Templar1+(Kossuth, favored weapon spiked chain)/PrC4. PrC is either Templar or some other +1 BAB class that strikes your fancy -- if your cha weren't so bad we could use Holy Liberator or Singh Rager but those are out... ________________ Not sure I helped you any but they are pretty good if unusual builds. By the way, advising someone who wants a "good" character or the "best" character to build something like an eight-armed basket weaver isn't really a joke -- that person has not been specific in what he wants to be "good" or the "best" at so the eight-armed basket weaver is actually the best basket weaver available. Looking through the boards, and hanging out here is the best education in character design (mechanics-wise anyway) I can think of. |
| Boondoggle02-23-04, 11:00 PM | Play a war hulk. You obviously have 'no time to think' about what you want in a character... |
| Raging Halfling02-23-04, 11:02 PM | Well, I don't know specifically what you want to do or what the rest of the party has in mind, but...as some mentioned above, you could have a very good cleric there. With racial adjustments, stats might look like this: Str 22, Dex 11, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 18, Cha 8. I would suggest then using your 3 distributed points to bring Cha to 10 and Con to 14. Pick a martial deity with access to the War domain and a good favored weapon (preferably two-handed). Use all of the clerical buff spells to make yourself into a damage machine. You could try different stat placement, but that's my assessment at a quick glance. As far as PrCs go, well, I wouldn't worry about it much. Base clerics are actually quite powerful. The main problem with the stat placement above is that you'd need to roleplay a really dumb half-ogre of the "I smash things" variety. Or you could just make a barbarian and go all out on the damage potential. If doing this: Str 24, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 8, Wis 9, Cha 8. Then use the 3 points to raise Con, Wis, and one other stat of your choice. Have fun raging and smashing things. Later on you can do Frenzied Berserker and/or Runescarred Berserker. That's if your party doesn't mind the fact that they might have to waste spells calming you down after tough fights. But, since I have no idea what you actually WANT to play, that's about all I have for you right now. |
| nihility02-23-04, 11:52 PM | Half-Ogre Gish: Half-Ogre Fighter 1/ Wizard 6/ Spellsword 1/ Dragonslayer 1/ Eldritch Knight 10 BAB 16 Caster Level 17 Put the 18 in INT, plus the bonus points. Put the 16 in CON, the 13 in DEX, and whatever for the rest. I bet that won't be what people expect! |
