| jaerad04-15-05, 10:35 PM | I know no one min/maxes Healers 'cause they're boring to play, but aside from that.. Allowing all WotC books. Campaign will have Gestalt classes. My friend wants to be more of a support type - healing, buffing/debuffing, etc. Basically hiding back like a mage. With Gestalt, it will be possible to incorporate some nice damage dealing in as well (through wiz perhaps?). The idea here is your FF2 Mage (white and black magics equally). She is partial to Druids as a concept, but mostly she sees herself on the backlines of a fight, throwing in whatever she can. I've never really gone spellcaster, but my initial thoughts are Cleric/Wiz. I heard something about a Healer class in the Minitures book, but I haven't read it. I don't know much about healing classes, except that Pal/Cleric are kinda half-fighters. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
| Neb Rybel04-15-05, 11:04 PM | Druidic Healer of Ehlonna (Elf, Gnome, or Half-Elf) (Healer X - Druid X) Double Wisdom Caster. The Armor restrictions align perfectly. Radiant Servant of Pelor boosts the Healing Domain substantially, plus it grants extra uses of the Sun Domain... Turning and Greater Turning are sort of like healing the soul (freeing a trapped spirit from an undead tomb). |
| Ashianyl04-15-05, 11:05 PM | Well, if support is the route you are going and you aren't too worried about trying to get x number of actions per round, try using Chain Spell with Divine Metamagic and buff / heal away. At higher levels, if you can squeeze in Persistant / Chain, that would really help the entire party, although you will be hard pressed to have both and enough Extra Turnings. Access to Nightsticks from Libris Mortis will solve this though. Having a high initiative would help you pull off the buffs before everyone rushes off into melee or into other positions and out of your 30ft radius reach. Other supporting roles you can play is to have dispel magics handy to debuff with Chain Spell. :) |
| PhoenixInferno04-15-05, 11:06 PM | The problem with Healer is that it doesn't allow you to commit any kind of violence. If you're going to be stuck not hurting things, you might as well get something out of it. Thus, you should look into going for Vow of Nonviolence and Vow of Peace. If you mix the other side with a diplo-Bard build you should be sittin pretty. |

Also how many Vows can you take? If you look at it, Chastity and Nonviolence are broken via the same circumstances. Also Nonviolence and Peace are very similar in their constraints as well. |
| Neb Rybel04-15-05, 11:29 PM | Uh... no it doesn't. I just looked at the Healer class. It doesn't say anything about not being able to kill. The only place "Eschewing violence" is used is in terms of spells. "eschewing the use of violent spells" which means "There are no harmful spells on their spell list." You could have a Gestalt Healer - Warmage... it would be kind of weird, but you could do it. |
| PhoenixInferno04-15-05, 11:46 PM | Hmmm...could have sworn... In any case, Vow of Nonviolence and Vow of Peace are still pretty good choices for a Healer to take. |
| allenchan04-15-05, 11:50 PM | I think a healer/warmage would be pretty cool. Or, for total bad-assed-ness a healer/cleric. I mean, c'mon! |

You could have a Gestalt Healer - Warmage... it would be kind of weird, but you could do it. So you could only take non-harmful Warmage spells, correct? *EDIT* Also, what constitutes a harmful spell? Guessing this forbids debuffs and hold person/monster with the intent of it getting Coup de Graced - same as Peace/Nonviolence. I don't think she could take Vow of Peace. It extends beyond her own actions; if she is willfully aiding us in killing she still breaks the vow. Nonviolence causes penalties when we kill, but doesn' break vow methinks. But it does limit her a lot considering we're going to dungeoncrawl and be killin' a LOT. She could buff/heal, but no debuff/offense. Not sure she'd really want to go that extreme in order to be a badmofo healer. *EDIT* cleaned up spelling and minor fixes. Any way to fit Druid into this as well? She's into the nature affinity kind of stuff, so Ranger might be workable too. She's not totally deadset on being a "hide from baddies and nuke/heal" character, but that is kind of the emphasis she wants (and it would be nice to have a healer, but there's lots of ways around that). |
| jaerad04-16-05, 12:20 AM | Druidic Healer of Ehlonna (Elf, Gnome, or Half-Elf) (Healer X - Druid X) Sounds good so far. This a made up on the spot name, or something with some more info out there? Or is Ehlonna a diety? (Like I said, I know diddly about spellcasters) *EDIT* Ok, googled Ehlonna. Sounds like the right kinda deity (though I don't know anything about the particular schools outside of what y'all have told meh). Also, any PrCs you guys can think of that would be helpful are welcome as well. |

The only thing a Healer has to do is heal Good-Aligned Beings in need and to heal allies. 1. Ehlonna is a Deity. When I said Druidic Healer I was implying: Druid 20 - Healer 20. Ehlonna is a Nature Deity worshiped by Elves, Half-Elf, and Gnomes. |

All sounds good so far, but like I said we got a lot of research ahead of us. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I actually wasn't expecting much help because other Healer threads had like, one comment saying "They're boring." |
| Neb Rybel04-16-05, 12:59 AM | You have to put that in perspective. The typical Powergamer's (and that is what the majority of posters on this board are) motivation for making a character is to be the center of the game. Kill the most, skill the most, spell the most. Edit: If you want the White Mage - Black Mage feel, then Healer - Warmage would do it. Healers can take advantage of Charisma. Warmages have Warmage's Edge that adds Int to damage spells, while Healers add Charisma to healing spells (CLW at CL 5 with an 16 Charisma is 1d8 + 5 + 3 restored hit points). |

I think my egoism would be checked pretty quick with a few comments. "Remember that time I rezed you?" "Remember that time when you were barely crawling on the ground trying not to get stepped on, and I healed da bajeez outta ya?" "Ya, I bet that +8 STR I hit ya with didn't help at'tal." *EDIT* Man, can't believe I almost forgot: "Ya, that was some cool damage... But remember when I cleared the whole room, before you could even ready your weapon, that one time w/ [insert badmofo spell here]?" So prime stats will be CHA/INT? Which should be higher if she has to choose? If you wanna rattle off some stats, we're going 30pt buy. **EDIT** Oh ya, this is 30 pts w/o scaling. So 8, 10, 14, 10, 18, 18 is possible. Yes, I am 2E stupid - Heros have godly stats. |
| jaerad04-16-05, 02:19 AM | Man, I don't know if this fits her concept but Seer [http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=413950] is frickin' ubAR! Seer + Healer = omfg. That would be pretty sweet. Well, at least to me it sounds cool. She might be much less offensive oriented than even the Healer/Warmage builds. Gotta talk to her some more, and find out what she thinks of some of this stuff. She had mentioned Druids, but I don't know if that's just what she thinks they should be, as opposed to the way they are portrayed in D&D. She's only played on one occasion before, and I think she was a Cleric or a Mage or something. I forget, but she doesn't have nearly the skill in Knowledge (Geekdom) that even I have, and anyone that's seen my posts knows that I'm a n3wb. |

Str 8, Dex 10, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 18, Cha 18. However... if she did Healer X - Psion X, swap Charisma (Warmage) and Intelligence (Psion). Psions (even if they aren't Kineticists) can still be blasters. In fact, they are better at it than Wizards since they can do it with as few as one 3rd level power. |
| jaerad04-16-05, 04:43 AM | Where can I find stuff about Warmage? *EDIT* N/m, Complete Arcane. How does Healer/Warmage look as far as buffs/debuffs, scrying type things, etc (all the other magic things)? What I meant by a White/Black Wiz was that in that game a Mage was your magic user - could do everything. One thing no one has mentioned, Bard? Those are mostly buffers right? Or are they Rogues w/ singy spells? That's not necessarily what she's probably interested in, but I'm pretty much trying to balance healing/support w/ something else. I just want her to be active and happy with her character. Healing/support might be enough, but I just wanted to explore the options. Just as a guess I'd rank things: Heal > Buff/Debuff > Scry > Nuke. Though she may be more interested in Heal > Nuke > Buff..etc. Like I said, I'm just scouting things out. Gonna talk to her more specifically this weekend and see what we can narrow things down to. Thanks for all your help so far, the options you guys have suggested sound like a lot of fun - and ub3rz0rzised...ed. :shifty: |
| Neb Rybel04-16-05, 05:04 AM | Warmage can be found in the Complete Arcane Healer is in the Miniature's Handbook Psion is in the Expanded Psionics Handbook (Just in case you were wondering) |

Someone mentioned Cleric.. Druid still worthwhile? What's a Seer for, scrying & nuking? I haven't got a clue what to look for with spells. Gonna leave that up to her, just looking for directions. Healer sounds like it gets Healing & Buff stuff, does it have the ub3r buffs that r0x0rz j00r b0xoRz? Obviously it has no debuffs/nukes, so is that what we should look to go into with her Gestalt to balance? What about racial paragons (modified here:)? What PrCs? Racial Sub levels? Scrying I think would be really cool, and add a lot of RP elements. Identify is very worthwhile as well. Although, I've heard that we should stick to Wands of Cure for healing - same goes for identify? And if we just need wands for healing - do we need a healer? Should she ditch that? Campaign isn't set yet - we're going to build off what we pick for characters. I just want to help her get some cool options going. Btw, doubley thanks to you all. Very helpful and informative. |
| Pathanus04-20-05, 11:24 AM | If you want to have a little more blasting (and other stuff) you could go Cleric/Sorc or Cleric/<Arcane Caster Class> gestalt and take Arcane Disciple (from CD) and use arcane spell slots for healing magic too (if you have Healing Domain). Path |
| Gerdreg04-20-05, 11:45 AM | Psion or Wilder 3 / Cleric 4 / Psychic Theurge 10 / Sangehim 3 would be my vote for raw healing per day. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625c http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040925b |
