| EtherealFocus07-31-05, 07:08 PM | Ok, so I'm making a character that will be low level for a fairly long time. Starting stats are 16/15/14/13/12/8 for the whole party, and there will be mostly combat vs NPCs as opposed to monsters. This makes poison use actually practical. We're starting at CR2 and planning to level roughly every other session. What poisons are cheap, decently high save, enough damage to make it worth the effort? EDIT: I'm playing a lizardfolk, which means safe poison use. Just in case that changes anything... |
| jameswilliamogle07-31-05, 07:21 PM | if you can get it, phase spider poison is nice (DC 17, d8 con primary and secondary). the last campaign i was in we had the ranger extract some w/ a knowledge:nature check, and got from 5 spiders like 5 doses. much later the BBEG trying to kill us was a beholder. just in case you wondered, abjurations have the lowest fort saves :D. it was fun! |
| Tempest Stormwind07-31-05, 10:03 PM | As for stuff actually statted, blue whinnis (injury DC 14, 1 Con / Unconciousness, 120 GP) and vapid leaf extract (injury DC 16, Euphoria (daze) / 2d6 Int, 250 GP) are my personal favorites. I used both extensively on a bounty hunter character I had (the fact that the bounty hunter was a cover identity for a nimblewright just added to the fun). |
| EtherealFocus07-31-05, 11:12 PM | Thanks - what books are these poisons from btw? I probably know less about poison than any other aspect of D&D since I've never used it before... |
| Benedict the Black08-01-05, 12:44 AM | There are quite a few poisons (including blue whinnis) in the DMG. A more extensive list, as well as rules regarding crafting of poisons can be found in the Book of Vile Darkness. |
| Hesparex08-01-05, 12:46 AM | Carrion crawler brain juice is a nice all or nothing low level poison |
| Tempest Stormwind08-01-05, 03:25 AM | Thanks - what books are these poisons from btw? I probably know less about poison than any other aspect of D&D since I've never used it before... These, and other nifties, are in the Arms & Equipment Guide. There's an entire page taken up with a table of poisons. :D |
