Using only core material. [PH,DMG,MM,psionics from the SRD]

what would be the best item to give to a *raven to assist you in combat

*ravens can speak a language as a supernatural ability and thus can use command word activated items.

the less expensive the better.

The top two on my list from the DMG are medallion of thoughts(12000gp) and cape of the montebank (10080gp)

Scaled to size, the raven is just strong enough to carry both.

The first one lets you have your familiar scan for lifeforms and/or read the thoughts of weak willed creatures while your sorcerer is bluffing them into ignoring those will save checks they're making :) (no telltale concentration)

The latter lets the familiar get you out of trouble even when you are incapable of acting.

Excelent if a bit on the expensive side :(

How about a feather token whip for 500 gp you can have a grappling/tripping assistant.

Hat of disguise

Since the raven can talk, and now look like whoever you want, it can do all of your information gathering for you. Knowing what you are up against should help considerably.

But wouldnt a hat of disguise only allow him to disguise as other birds of similar size?

yeah, disguise self doesn't let you change types.

But...it means you can turn into something that is not a raven, owl or hawk and thus you don't have the "I am a familiar, shoot me" arrow pointing over your head when scouting.

Antimagic Torc, no question. Use it to take out those nasty enemy wizards, then pound them with instantaneous conjuration attacks.

Isnt there some item in Savage species called hands of man? theyre like magic gloves that give you fingers and thumbs. Kind of neat.

I think a familar in an AM Field is a bad idea... for the familiar!

Quaal's feather token: tree. If you are in trouble, have the familiar drop the token on the ground by your feet. An 80 foot high tree will pop up underneath you, saving your from danger.

After checking through the DMG, I found several items that might prove handy.

A Ring of Shooting Stars would be pricey, but would provide a number of options to the familiar.
Assuming the familiar can fly with a 1lb load, a Chime of Interruption would be excellent caster hate.
I don't see any reason familiars can't make ranged touch attacks, although there is pesky line in the PHB that could be interperated to mean familiars can only make natural attacks. So unless you have an extremely rules lawyery DM, a raven could probably use Iron Bands of Bilarro.
If it could be sized to fit, a Minor Circlet of Blasting would be a reusable attack.
If you're worried about price and can get by with just consumeable items: a Necklace of Fireballs doesn't need to be tied around a neck to function.
A Bead of Force is a powerful one-shot item.
My personal favorites however, would be Oil of Invisibility or Dust of Disappearance, which gives the familiar a good shot at saving my butt.
