I've been giving some thought as to the first scrolls my newbie wizard will be creating/buying and wanted to get some input from you folks. Consider it character resource optimization.

Obviously this depends quite a bit on the spells that are available to him, but just for the sake of argument assume that it isn't an issue.

What are your 'must have' scrolls that you create/buy as quickly as possible?

Edit: I'm really asking about scrolls to keep on hand as opposed to scribing into spellbooks.

My thoughts:
Protection from Evil
Disguise Self
Expeditious Retreat
Tenser's Floating Disk

identify.

If you don't need it for 3 or 4 levels you have permission to kill the DM. :)

Serious about magic missile?

Considering a newbie wizard drops 25 gold for a scroll that does an average of 3.5 damage, is it really worth it? At these levels I figured I'm pretty much better off with a crossbow for damage.

i thought more of writing it to his spellbook.

Mount, Color Spray, Grease if you can't get them in your spellbook. Besides these are always useful to have around especially at low levels.

Scrolls should be spells which aren't level dependant (or level tends to be irrelevant) or are rarely used. Shield is a great candidate, as is Identify. (Note that I mean for spells which you know already and are scribing onto scrolls as a backup or an "extra casting per day" type thing.)

I should have specified that I'm asking about scrolls to keep on hand as opposed to scribe into a spellbook.

Identify, Hold Portal and Mount are good suggestions!

Oddly enough, magic missile scrolls are pretty good until level 3 (when self-cast missiles, L2 spells and more powerful L1 spells are better)

Yes, your crossbow does the same or slightly better damage.

But you will hit EVERY time with the magic missile. You will miss most of the time with the crossbow because you are a mage without any ranged combat feats. (if you have precise shot, high dex and small size, sure, stick with the crossbow...those who spent feats and attribute points in other directions will value the scrolls).

You use the scroll to finish off a badly wounded but dangerous enemy, especially one that the fighters have been having trouble hitting. I carried four scrolls of MM on my recent sorcererss at all times until she hit level 2 and I was never sorry when it came time to use them. At 12.5gp a pop for self-scribed or 25 for purchased, it's as good as a splash weapon and a whole lot more reliable.

At low levels, fighters miss a LOT just due to bad dice, and you are so fragile that the 2hp high AC badguy can kill the entire party with bad luck. Magic missile scrolls are cheap insurance.

Lots of L1 scrolls are good. Ray of enfeeblement, Truestrike, Disguise Self, Exp Retreat, Mage Armor, Shield (I hate shield memorized, it is usually a waste of an action, but when you need it, you need it), Mount, Prot Evil, Grease (for grapple escapes on allies) are all lifesavers from time to time.

Basically anything that isn't level dependant and doesn't grant a saving throw. I know Ray of Enfeeblement gets better with higher levels, but it doesn't allow a save.

Others:
Enlarge Person <--One of the best melee buffs in the game
Reduce Person
Comprehend Languages
Endure Elements
Jump
Magic Weapon

Well I dont have a huge selection of spells in this campaign world I am currently in. Not to mention I have to have certain materials and so forth to make the scrolls. I am only level 4 (almost 5) currently

But as far as right now, I always scribe scrolls on spells that I dont use all that often and I want to free up spell slots spells I will more than likely use in the course of the day.

Right now, I have 4 scrolls, 2 comprehend languages and 2 tensers floating disks. I will probablly make scrolls of invisibility, knock, and other utility spells. I try to free up my memorized list for primarily combat oriented spells (offensive, defensive, and battlefield control).

If you wanted to do offensive scrolls I would recomend color spray its an amazing spell and gives you more bang for you buck at the low levels. Heck its even a kitchen sink spell at higher levels in my opinion. Magic Missle does not really become worth using until level 5 in my opinion. One catch about colorspray try not to catch allies in it, so far I havent. I am extremely cautious about using it.
