What's the best 'subject' for a Wizard to cast POA on himself?

At 15th level, I'm sure there's a number of prime candidates up to that HD. I'm looking for something that's somewhat hardy, and that has a good Intelligence and Dexterity to power up my spells and ray casting capabilities somewhat . . .

. . . is there a thread out there that can help me?

And what about items n' such? Can I take my Headband of Intellect +6 off, cast POA, then plonk it back on again in my new form ( assuming said new down has an appendage capable of wearing it )?

Thanks for any help . . .

Polymorph any object ( PAO ) :

a good choice is the Tulani ( 10 HD medium outsider with dex 22, int 24 and natural AC +20 - BoED p. 171 ) - but you have to be an outsider
