| Ashenai11-03-04, 01:45 PM | Here's a challenge-type thing for you guys that I think also might have relevance in optimizing a character for a real high-level campaign. Make the deadliest primary caster possible... in an anti-magic (and anti-psionic) field. I'm talking about a level 20 character who can cast level 9 arcane or divine spells, or manifest level 9 powers... but is as deadly as possible when stuck in an anti-magic field. No cheating with Disjunction; the anti-magic field is undispellable and absolute. You can't cast or manifest anything, nor use magic items. Here's a fairly trivial build: Fighter 1 / Wizard 6 / Spellsword 3 / Eldritch Knight 10. Casts as a level 17 Wizard, and has a BAB of 17. No special abilities, though. I'm sure you guys can come up with something better. I'm thinking the key to this challenge will probably be some cool race. We'll see. |
| Iku Rex11-03-04, 01:55 PM | You can't cast ...(Of course you can. Thanks to the Initiate of Mystra feat from Player's Guide to Faerun.) |
| Ashenai11-03-04, 01:58 PM | Bah, cheating already. ;) Let's ban that feat. |
| Nightspirit11-03-04, 02:24 PM | (Of course you can. Thanks to the Initiate of Mystra feat from Player's Guide to Faerun.) cleric 20 of mystra with initiate of mystra and something that give him a bonus on caster level checks...the most deadly pc ever... wizard 5/fighter 2/barbarian 1/frenzied berserker 4/eldritch knight 8 BaB +17, wizard level 13°(extended anti magic field) or antropomorphic elephant, african, feral(ECL +6) wizard 5/spellsword 1/fighter 1/eldritch knight 7 |
| Sardrakh11-03-04, 02:32 PM | How about an Dragonkin Fighter 1/Ur Priest 10 ? Essential Feats: Practiced Spellcaster x2, Improved Natural Attack, Iron Will, Spell Focus(evil) BaB +18 Caster Level 18 Saves: Fort +7 Ref +10 Will +15(17) |
| Fwib11-03-04, 03:04 PM | cleric 20 of mystra with initiate of mystra and something that give him a bonus on caster level checks...the most deadly pc ever... errr... wouldn't the 'something' not work in the AMF? Initiate of Mystra doesn't let your magic items function in an AMF does it? |
| Sang-Drax11-03-04, 03:32 PM | How about Shadow Weave User casting Anti-magic field from a Weave scroll? |
| carnivore11-03-04, 03:46 PM | how about looking at the gish thread, any build there which has a BAB +16 or better and can wear armor armed with an adamantine weapon would do just fine. :D oh i forgot, cast 9th lvl spells too. ;) |
| xerofire11-03-04, 04:01 PM | How about Shadow Weave User casting Anti-magic field from a Weave scroll? Now I had been thinking of that for a while but aren't they now longer able to access the weave AT ALL? would UMD bypass this, or is it a cut off since you switched to shar from mystra's weave? |
| Khazra Reborn11-03-04, 04:33 PM | white dragon spawn (buy off la) battle sorcerer(militia)8/dragon slayer1/spellsword1/EK10 20th level caster & 18 BaB, apart fom that, pretty damn boring & a horrible cheesy odour :P |
| The Simbul11-03-04, 04:41 PM | How about Shadow Weave User casting Anti-magic field from a Weave scroll?Antimagic Field affects ALL spells equally, regardless of what weave the AMF effect is generated by. The only magical (or semi-magical) effects that can function in an Antimagic Field thus far are: *Artifacts. *spells cast by beings with a Divine Rank of 0 or greater. *Salient Divine Abilities. *Epic Spells (with a successful caster level check). *spells cast by beings with the Initiate of Mystra feat (with a successful caster level check). |
| shadow mage11-03-04, 05:34 PM | Hm...which gish should I mention first...;) I’ll be fair and keep it at a minimum CL/ML with access to 8th level spells/powers. How about this one. Fighter1/Sorcerer6/Spellsword3/Eldritch Knight10. That’s +17 BAB and 17 caster levels. With Ignore 15% ASF, he can wear +5 twilight mithral full plate (starts at 35% ASF, then down to 25% with mithral, down again to 15% with twilight, and minus the rest with spellsword, and in an antimagic field the twilight shuts off, not that he can cast spells anyway... ;) ). Give him...oh, let’s say...Combat Expertise, Improved Combat Expertise, Power Attack, and an adamantine greatsword. Now he can sit there in melee and NOT get hit, OR hit hard as hell until the antimagic effect ends. Or we can play mean and pull out a Barbarian1/Sorcerer6/Rage Mage2/Eldritch Knight10/Frenzied Berserker1. Here’s a +16 BAB and 16 caster level build. So what if you’re in an antimagic field of whatever kind, you can simply use rage and frenzy for +10 Strength, +4 Constitution, -6 AC, and an extra attack during a full attack at highest bonus. He should be wearing at LEAST light armor, probably a chain shirt since a mithral chain shirt and rage mage allow for no penalty. While you’re not the hardest thing to hit, if you’ve got Power Attack and a greatsword people are NOT going to want to approach you. And as a third alternative, I’ll show an odd-ball build. Rogue4/Ex-Paladin Blackguard7/Nar Demonbinder1/Eldritch Knight5/Spellsword3. This build has +18 BAB, Blackguard CL 7, Nar Demonbinder CL 7 (full), decent early skills, and the ability to wear twilight mithral full plate. His sneak attack is +4d6. He can pull out Power Attack, the TWF tree, and Arcane Strike (not used while in antimagic field). This guy can seriously put on a hurting in melee with zero magical benefits and a pair of adamantine weapons. |
| shadow mage11-03-04, 05:34 PM | Oi, it double posted meh. :embarrass |
| xerofire11-03-04, 05:38 PM | Antimagic Field affects ALL spells equally, regardless of what weave the AMF effect is generated by. true but the trick works in a magic dead zone. so i guess its a tactic if you fight in an arena built on a magic dead site often. I actually like shadow weave items for that reason, they are hardly ever turned off by "natural" disturbances in the weave. |
