Best Primeval Creature [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-01-06, 03:02 PM I did an advanced google search for a thread like this and came up empty, so...

The Primeval prestige class (from Frostburn) gives you an ability to add the strength score -10 or -11 of any one 8 HD or less dinosaur or dire animal (others are up to DM and are not for this discussion) onto your existing strength. My question is what 8 HD or less dinosaur or dire animal has the highest strength?

I did a search through the SRD and found the Dire Boar was tops at +16. Does anyone know of anything higher?

03-01-06, 07:31 PM Dire Lion and Megaraptor are probably the best total packages.

03-01-06, 07:45 PM I don't believe that's the case. The Megaraptor was errataed to a Large creature, unless I'm mistaken--which would put it in reach of a Medium Primeval, yes?

03-01-06, 10:27 PM Oh, you just want highest Strength? I actually think one of the best uses of Primieval is with the Fleshraker Dino. I know, only a Str of 16, but that Leaping Pounce special attack is just beautiful, and by using the Primieval ability instead of normal shapechanging, you can push that strength much higher as it stacks with your existing strength, and increases with more Primieval levels.

03-02-06, 12:38 AM I like the simplicity of Dire Lion. The Fleshraker (MM3) is nice too.

03-02-06, 05:24 AM Pounce from the Dire Lion/Fleshraker/Megaraptor is really great, I don't disagree with that. However, if you don't mind considering something else, I would like to suggest the Dire Wolf.

Nothing really fancy, but it's nice when you tack on Wolf Berserker (Unapproachable East) and Improved Trip onto it. True you have only 1 attack, but if you hit, you get a free trip after which you get another attack. If the opponent tries to stand up, you get to take an AOO on him. So in a sense you get '3' attacks which is not too bad.

On a side note, the Str isn't half bad too, +14 if I remember correctly.
