Best Race For Mystic Theurge [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-27-04, 06:14 AM I'm sure the theurge has been done to death on the boards here, but my question is what races or templates are the best for such a character? :b:

My thought is Aasimar with the Wis/Cha bonus, but only the no LA version.

12-27-04, 06:41 AM Dwarf. The extra con keeps you alive, and then take some runesmith so you can armor up. You have the prof, after all. This is of course, if you're willing to delay you clerical casting even more. Honestly, anymore then 13 levels of cleric casting is pushing it, in my mind.

Wiz 3/Clr 3/Runesmith 1/ MysThu 10/ Runesmith 2-5/ Epic Theuerge.

Dwarven cleric of Mystra is kinda whack, though. Good luck coming up with the story on this one.

Go for the Gold Dwarf if you want to be a sorcerer (for whatever reason) or don't want the -2 Cha penalty to get in the way when divine metamagicking.

12-28-04, 10:17 PM Aasimar is still technically LA+1 even with the optional rules at the back of PGTF, since your next level goes towards buying off the penalties.

That said, the best race would be one with one of the favoured class you plan to multiclass with to MT, either cleric or wizard/sorc, and with bonuses to intel/wis or both, since you will want at least 17+ in both stats, seeing how you will eventually get at least 7th lv spells both arcane and divine. And from what I heard, Epic MT progression sucks, and it would be better to advance in one of your base classes, and you will want to avoid that 20% xp penalty. In a pinch, take magical training to get wiz as additional favoured class.

I think the best race is still human, for the bonus skill points and feat. Avoid races with LA like the plague as it will retard the advancement of your already slow caster progression. Maybe go a race with bonus to either int or wis to alleviate the high mental scores you need. Sun elf comes to mind, but the -2 con will hurt( it always does)

12-29-04, 02:44 AM I'd think Illumian would be good. Take the sigils that let you use your dexterity mod for your bonus spells and go from there. Dex will now increase your spellcasting, armor class and to-hit bonus with ranged spells.

12-29-04, 12:12 PM Well, Human in my opinion is best, either that or that Halfling that gets a bonus feat, because you can get that all important practiced spellcaster out of the way quick and easy, since the best way right now for MT builds is to go with Precocious Apprentice, then Cleric for 3 levels to qualify for MT at lvl 4. Plus I think its better to stick to one spellcasting class over the other, and use the other for backup, not so much make them both equal. I would really love to be able to do with and focus on Arcane casting over clerical but since there is no Precocious Apprentice for Cleric I cant.

The highest Ive gotten in both Arcane in Divine is with this build
1 Wizard/ 3 Cleric/ 14 True Necromancer/ 2 MT

Base CL of 15 with Arcane and Base CL of 19 in Divine. Practiced Spellcaster makes it all the better :)
