Any limits on ECL, Racial HD or LA?

Goliaths are great for fighter classes, at the cost of 1 ECL you gain:

Large Weapons

+4str, +2con

Size Bonuses to disarm, trip, bull rush, overrun, grapple etc....

Really nice feat options that are restricted to goliaths or large creatures, like one that gives +1 nat AC, ones that make you a rock thrower or even let you throw enemies (or allies), etc....

Ability to do running jumps without having to get a running start.

First replier: No. I can use any race in a book.

Second replier: Thanks, I'll consider that. Any other of you fine folks here at CO know good races for those classes?

Best races for?
Bard
Barbarian

Monk
Paladin

Answer: It Depends what you're doing and what you want.

If you're just looking for strong races, look at lesser aasimar, warforged, whisper gnome, and humans.

Assuming PHB-only races:

Bard: Gnome if you plan on illusion spells, half-elf if you are a "talker" otherwise human.
Barbarian: Dwarf or half-orc.
Fighter: Dwarf or half-orc.
Monk: Human, there is no other choice; you need that bonus feat.
Paladin: Human.

For barbarian I say Goliath: +4str +2 con, powerful build which kicks ass and the ability to accelerated climb at no penalty and make running long jumps without a running start. Their barbarian racial sub is really good too.

For monk I say Githzerai, the last 2 monk levels aren't that great anyway but Githzerai get +6dex +2wis, combine that with timeless body and you negate the int penalty and get an effective +5 or +6 to monk Armor Class

Paladin I would say Aasimar, +2wis and +2cha. They also make great soulborn too.

Fighter it depends on combat style. If you like being finessy then Air Genasi or Tiefling. Basically anything goes with Fighter, the best fighter Ive played was a skullcrusher Ogre TWF with a waraxe and heavy shield. I had a Harsaaf fighter wielding a spiked chain, he turned out really well. I would avoid adding templates if you want to adjust level.

Bard Im not sure, maybe Catfolk or Drow.

The question is really rather moot since your choice of race (from a CO perspective) comes down to what you want your character to do, which isn't necessarily limited by your class. Some of my favourite races at the moment include:
Flind Gnoll - ecl 4, big stat boosts, EWP: flindbar
were-direbat - ecl 7-8, very nice stats, large hybrid size, flight
Bauriar (planar handbook) - LA+1, outsider type, SR 11+class
Catfolk - LA+1, good stats, 40' speed, early pounce feat
Ed-Zero

What is the gnome that gets the extra feat at first level like a human? That race would be pretty good for almost anything.

You're thinking Strongheart Halfling (or was that "stoutheart"?)

The halfling that trade the general luck bonus to saves for a feat is strongheart I believe (It is FR which is a campaign setting I dont much care for as poorly written rules don't amuse me)

I'm ignoring creatures with hd and LA because they suck.
I'll try to stay away from anything overly complex because that would require too much of your time to understand what the hell I'm talking about.
I'm also ignoring lesser aasimar and lesser tieflings because they are broken and cannot condone anyone using them under any circumstance

Bard - Elves are great (Half-Elf substitution levels from Races of the Wild isn't bad either)
Barbarian - Human, Half-Orc, or Dwarf
Fighter - Human is good, but fighter is too vague to choose which one in particular
Monk - Overall Human (Half-Orc or Dwarf are playable, but not suggested)
Paladin - Human

I like the warforged for barbarians, because of the con bonus, and the not-getting-tired-after-raging ability.

Monk

Bard - Star Elf - Forgotten Realms Unapproachable East, I'd also say add the spark template from one of the dragon magazines but i dont remember the number.
Barbarian - Warforged - Ebberon Campaign Setting
Fighter - Warforged - Ebberon Campaign Setting
Monk - Buomman - Planar Handbook
Paladin - Humans - PHB..

Those are all LA+0.. now if you dont care about LA's then there are just to many for any one particular class.

Let's look at the Dragon Shaman- it wants to add kobolds or spellscales, but are either of these two races optimal? Taking any kobold as a character almost requires taking Dragonwrought feat at 1st level. Level 2(?) of Dragon Shaman is pretty much similar to the innate spell like abilities of the Dragonwrought type (although being Dragonwrought is much better- pg. 39 of RotD lets Kobolds grow smarty, wise, and charming without a lost step).

Any thoughts about a kobold dragon shaman?

Bard? Half-elf, by far. There is simply no other ability that can compare with Soothing Voice for enhancing the power of a Bard, and only a Half-Elf with the first racial substitution level can get Soothing Voice.

whys everyone hating on the halfling? they make great palidins, rogues, casters.

Strongheart halfling palidins beat out the human hard! think, they get the extra feat, size bonus to hit(a more accurate smite anyone?),their dex helps with the riding, they get access to the halfling outrider(omg best prc ever for palidins)and with the right class dips can deal just as much or more melee damage(use their high charisma bonuses+marshal aura over the hill..charismaX3 on charges...amkes strength a dump) and are awsome mobile throwers(total of natural +3 to ranged attacks)

Oh, heck, I'd never hate on the halfling; I'm married to one. ;) Besides, Strongheart Halfling's key to the Supermount build.

Has anyone mentioned Illumians? They rock something awful, multiclassing is suggested for them, and because of their sigils, you can adapt them to fit almost any class. I'm playing a shadow sentinel, one of the illumian only PrCs, in a campaign now, and he's been quite poweful. All in all, illumian make exceptional rogues, paladins and wizards, because most of their sigil combinations favor those classes. Besides, they look cool too. :D

If by "they look cool" you mean "they look like idiots" I agree with you completely on that one.
