Best route to Nar-demon-singer - Hex or fighter? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm working up a character for a new campaign. We'll be starting at level five and I had the idea of a bladesinger/Nar demonbinder combo. I have two routes in mind:

1: Fighter4/sorceror2/Bladesinger6 (3.0)/Nar2/EK6

2: Heblade5/sorceror1/bladesinger6/Nar2/EK6

Both net a base attack of 18 and almost the same spell progression - number 2 losing only one level of soreceror. Adding the demonbinder caster levels to sorceror gets me either a 4 or 5 die magic missile which can be cast as a free action with song of celerity. So, basicly, I'm trading weapon specialization and 1 die off a magic missile for Arcane resistance, mettle, and 2 hexes per day.

Note: We are using the 3.0 bladesinger from Races of Faerun because we have decided the 3.5 version doesn't suit us.

I'm inclined toward the Hexblade version, but I thought I'd see what you guys think.

Thanks.

Mettle if your saves are up to it. You'll have Arcane Strike anyway to outshine Weapon Spec, no?

Just noticed the 3.0 bladesinger still rerquires still spell. That throws the whole build out of whack. There's no way a Hexblade 5/sorceror1 can get 5 feats, so, I'd have to build a Hex3/fighter2/sorc1 to qualify. Comparing THIS one to a fighter4/sorc2, the Hexblade doesn't get as many goodies. Mettle and arcane resistance. No spells with this version and his magic missile will do 1d4+1 less damage.

Still think the Hex is a better startingpoint?

If you're taking levels in Hexblade, why put Sorceror in the build at all?

Hex 4/Fighter 2/Bladesinger 6/Nar 2/EK 6 is legal.

Of course, I would try to find a way to fit in Witch hunter 2 and Arcane duelist 2-3, but thats all personal preference.

I'd love to ditch the sorceror level, but Nar demonbinder requires knowledge of at least one summon monster spell. Since I have to take it, and since ND levels caster levels stack with sorceror, I can take summon monster 1 and magic missile as my 2 spells known and be casting quickened magic missiles.

is the second build bladesinger 3.0? otherwise how can you get 4th level spells?

I like the idea tho, combining 'singer and demonbinder. The problem is you're taking a PrC with int bonuses and combining it with a spellcaster that is cha based, all the while needing high dex, str, con, and everything but Wis.

Maybe you'd do better with

Marshall 1 (+Cha to spell penetration) or Hexblade 2
Sorc 6
Eldritch Knight 3 (adding to Sorc, now can cast 4th level spells)
Nar Demonbinder 1
Eldritch Knight (add to Nar)
Spellsword (add to Nar if you do marshall)
Then more Eldritch or Spellsword as desired to fill out Demonbinder casting.

You end up with around +16BAB, lv 8 demonbinder spells, lots of Charisma Synergy, Sorc spells (up to 5th) and you only have to dedicate 2 feats (NarD)

Try this build:

Drow Half-Elf = ... for the 60' Darkvision.

Bard4 / Ftr2 / Bladesinger6 / NarD1 / SacredExorcist4 / SpellSword3

Why SacredExorcist? You already have an uber-high CHA. Divine Might + Arcane Strike = Insane Damage. And you get to add the Inquisition Prestige Domain to your NarD spells known.

This build also fixes your Summon Monster dilemma while getting you some even more CHA-based spells and some awesome skill ranks to boot. If you don't need your Bard spells, sacrifice them to Arcane Strike.

*Feel* the Power!

Yeah, we're using the 3.o bladesinger.

Combining int and cha is not too tough. 32 point buy, using a sun elf and the magic blooded template nets me the following stats:

S:14
D:14
C:12
I: 16
W: 6
CH: 17

I have the character mostly planned out, I just don't know wether to start with Hex3/fighter2 or Fighter4/sorc1.

I thought about bard levels, but I think the way I have this character envisioned the singing is right out. Just doesn't fit the character.

So see if your DM will let you use Perform: Dance instead of singing. The only thing you use the singing for is your bardic music, anyway. And with only 4 levels of it, you could never even use it and not miss out on much.

And besides, I think the idea of a Bladesinger going into a chant as he attacks is kind of a cool image. Our DM made up a drow version of the bladesinger he calls a Mournweaver. We ran up against one, and we certainly didn't think his singing was in any way "sissyfied". It was dark, and dirge-like, and he very nearly beat our entire party's butts.

That's your perogative, JRR. But sure are missing out on a lot of CHA-based synergy in your build. PhaedrusXY made a great alternative play concept for the Bard prefix. Some Bards manifest their vocalizations via that similar to the Marshall or Warrior Skald ... with none of that floppy pants and merry tra-la-la hootenany to go with it.

And as stated, feed the Bard spell to your Arcane Strike if you want to. Frees up your ability to use Song of Celerity with your other bigger spells.

I DO like the sacred exorcist, however, and for the sacrifice of one base attack point, it's really worth it.
