Best Seer - Arcane or Divine? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm trying to build a secondary caster who is a world-class diviner and I can't figure out which is the best way to go: Arcane Divination Specialist (forbidden school: Evocation) or Cleric (Domains: Fate & Knowledge).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

As for PrC's - Divine Oracle is de rigeur and I think Divine Agent and Contemplative are also in my future.

Thanks!

Both routes are commendable.

I *love* arcane diviners. I'm currently playing 2 Wizards in my 2 gaming groups. An AT and a Diviner Utility Wizard.

A Diviner Wizard/DivineOracle/Loremaster build would be an awesome build combo for you. Take advantage of the Loremaster's Bard Lore ability to supplement your divinations ... and his awesome skill base. I also give you a  for having Evocation as a forbidden school. I tend to find divination spells and Summon Monster spells to be a good combo. Use divinations to scout ahead and reveal creature/hazards behind walls/doors. Then summon case-customized SM monsters prior to engagement that are best suited to dealing with specific foes or hazards.

And of course, you are king at "Scry-&-Die" Teleportation strategies as well. :smirk:

Snow.

Um, no. I don't recommend that at all. You want access to those higher level Divination spells ASAP (Scry, Clairvoyance, Prying Eyes). A 3 level delay would really suck.

Or you could go psionic...

True, but I think D. Serpent wants either a clerical or arcane solution to being a good Diviner.

To note, since the Divine Oracle PrC is on your horizon, I like to best take advantage of that grant Evasion ability you get at DO-2. Since your REFL save will most like blow, try to get magic items and or spell enhancements that will crank up your REFL save and/or DEX score. Normally WILL and FORT are the most important saves to me, but if you have Evasion, it's best to maximize the REFL save boons you do have.

Also, since you have Evasion, that answers the age-old debate as to which "survival" stat is more important to you - DEX or CON. DEX is the answer here. The False Life spell will help boost your HP's as a compensator.

if you take divine agent just for the domain...don't. take divine desciple (FRCS), you won't loose a caster level that way. (this only works if you are a divine character, it requires level 4 divine spells).

Especially since with the Divination and Knowledge domains I'm getting +3 caster levels when throwing divinations.

Which I do. I don't understand psionics nearly well enough, and it would be wrong flavor-wise.

I think I was actually thinking of Divine Disciple (I get those two mixed up) since it's crucial to get the Knowledge AND Divination domains. Thanks...

Deep Diviner from Underdark is another arcane option which gives a very interesting slant on the theme but does require DM assistance to make best use of the earth nodes

Here's what I'm currently thinking

Cleric 1/Wizard (Diviner) 8/Loremaster 3/Dragonslayer 1/Spellsword 1/Divine Oracle 6

Domains: Fate (Uncanny Dodge), Knowledge (+1 caster level w/Divination spells)

Thoughts? Suggestions? Comments?

Improvements?

Nice! Why not Cler1/Wiz6/Lore5 to get the extra bonus language, Secret, & sweet extra skill ranks? Same BAB. And the 1 level of Cleric right there easily takes care of "access" to a bunch of extra divination spells.

Perhaps you are not playing a human? Then I could understand the Loremaster feat crunch due to the missing human bonus feat.

Right you are! My elf wizard has acquired a band of outcast orcs (seer, shaman, bodyguard, scout, breeder, storyteller).

The local houserule allows followers to advance in levels, so I'm plotting out their progressions.

I agree with the extra Loremaster levels. So it looks like Clr1/Wiz6/Lore6/Dragonslayer1/Spellsword1/DivineOracle4 (since I can't see much reason to go beyond DivO 4).

Thanks for all the help everyone! Further comments and suggestions are, of course, welcome.
