Best single ally buffer. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I want to try a character that centers in buffing a single ally. It should be able to buff a spellcaster as well as a fighter. It wouldn't matter if it's effective by itself.

- I don't think bardic abilities will get to where I'd like.
- A simple cleric could buff, but there must be a way to center in this purpose only.
- An artificer could take a lvl 1 peasant and stuff him so much with magic items that he'd be able to defeat dragons, but I'd rather not go the item distributor way.
- I can't think of good ways to buff a spellcaster. (And I'm not looking for a walking shield.) maybe granting flight, greater invisibility, etc...

The concept is simply placing the character aside or behind a party member (so both same lvl +-1) from 1st round in a fight and start pumping spells/effects on him with enough effect that justifies (at least) the effective 1/2 actions that they'll both generate.

Not my usual character so, where should I start? Any PrC that I would have ignored, that fits the concept?

Just for kicks, check Bard with a feat called Words of Creation from Book of Exalted Deeds. Use violin or lute to get two songs going at the same time. That does give some excellent morale, competence and dodge bonuses when combined correctly. You take some serious amount of subdual damage, but hey, be an undead or something :P.

You might be able to add the seeker of music (?) or the other bard PrC from Complete Arcane.

But mostly, this post was to notify you about the bard+Words of Creation combo.

Edit: Of course, Bard does have some nice buffing spells too, like displacement etc.

Yes, I once made a marshal /bard /... as BBEG (the thread might be still somewhere). However, this time I wanted a character that gave added options to other characters, instead of bonuses to their actions.

To be a bit more precise (as my idea solidifies) I'd like to grant stuff similar to:
- ability to fly/burrow/climb
- polimorfization to some creature.
- size change
- attack technique change (like firebreathing)

Things that would put other players in a position of being able to explore options in D&D that they've never studied in depth.

Sounds like a typical wizard with Polymorph Any Object. PAO can be used to grant everything else besides firebreathing from that list of yours. Firebreathing can be granted probably through some other spells in Draconomicon or another of the zillion source books. Otherwise you can just design a spell of your own to do just that. Another trick would be to be a marshall/sorcerer. You would be able to grant stuff like extra move action, CHA bonus to SR checks, CHA bonus to initiative, et cetera. That would give options to help both melee chars and spellcasters.
