I am inheriting another's person's character, a level 17 straight ranger for a campaign that might go into epic levels. I am debating whether or not to take a prestige class at this point.

elven 3.5 ranger. Went TWF combat style. ranks in search, spot, listen, survival, handle animals, hide and move silently.
stats without items is 18 str, 16 dex, 18 con, 12 wis, 10 int, 8 cha
feats are weapon focus longsword, power attack, weapon focus handaxe, blindfight, improved trip, high sword low axe (Complete Warrior)

Can't change the feats or anything like that. No I did not pick them.

Recommendations?

I would like to pick up 1 level of spell casting for ranger, so I he becomes a 9th level caster, making his Barkskin +4 (freeing up the amulet slot for a amulet of health +6)

thanks

At that point, just continue as a ranger so you can get bonus feats for being an Epic Ranger.

I agree, Staying a ranger is your best bet at this point.

You're almost there, dude. Level 20 Ranger.

Redundant as it may seem I'll say stick with ranger.

Or take one level of cleric, wizard, and fighter. No just kidding.

If you're going very far into epic, I would look into the epic PrCs. If you like spellcasting, you could also spend a lot of feats and potentially get Epic Spellcasting, but you'd need to make sure to max out knowledge (nature) and Spellcraft as much as possible (you'd likely need to multiclass into something that would give you Spellcraft as class skill). If you run into your favored enemies much, there's also some very good epic feats for that as well. I'd also look into putting your animal companion to use as a mount.

Nentyar hunter/Druid/World guardian (Dragon 297) might be viable. Otherwise, Ranger 20+

I have to question what the level of Nentyar Hunter is for. The first few levels he gains nothing he doesn't already have and loses out on raising his Ranger caster level, BAB, skill points, and even a lower HD... it also requires Alertness and Combat Casting, and I doubt he has them both already.

I was thinking, you could possibly look into the Savage Progressions artical on the DnD web page and maybe work your way into a template or more powerful race.

Eagle prince, you're a great min/maxer, but RTFM on this one ;)

But what's so funny? I feel like I'm overlooking something now.

Nentyar hunter stacks caster levels with Ranger (Ranger 10+NH 1= caster level 11). As he is going epic, my primary concern is advancement at epic levels. Assuming he dosen't have either of the feats to qualify, he can take Nentyar hunter as his 21st level (which dosen't affect BAB), and qualify for World guardian at 24th. This may or may not be worth it. The expanded spell list is nice, as are the class abilities, but there may be better epic PrCs. Anything that adds a domain would also be very helpful, and you could even use Contemplative 2 to get into Void incarnate.

Well I never saw anywhere it said NH caster would stack with ranger. But if you're going to spend a feat to get into it, why not get into Lion of Talisid. That would get him some class features he doesn't already have and just as imporantly if you're looking for spellcasting, Spellcraft as a class skill (to be able to cast decent epic-level spells).
