Best time to take a level of Rogue? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Now I know that the first answer people will want to give is 1st level for the benefit of all those extra skill points.

-However-

I'm already a Fighter 2 about to take my third level. For purposes of the characters story and where the campaign is taking us I want to take a level of rogue or two at some point for Gather Info, Sense Motive, and skills of those like, but my character is first and foremost the parties' combat character. So getting combat feats are a priority. Taking my third level as rogue I'd still get a feat but my next fighter level would be featless while if I took fighter straight to 4th I'd get a feat every level.

So when is it best to multiclass into rogue if my starting levels are in fighter?

Have you considered the feat rogue from unearthed arcana? Its a great alternative to the normal rogue.

Fighter 2/ Feat Rogue 2/ Psychic Warrior 2... Thats 9 feats in 6 th levels right there. Sure you lose out on some base attack and som hp, but the feats is far better imo.

If you can, you might want to consider taking the feat rogue variant from UA. It is an awesome addition if you are only going to take a level or 2. That being said, if you have to take regular rogue, get the craven feat, that also is an awesome addition to any build for the cost of 1 feat.

For feat rogue, take the first one now, take the next one when you need the feat and the skill points or now for evasion. You could take up to four levels of it for 3 feats, evasion, uncanny dodge, quite a few extra skill points and +3 bab. Not a bad trade off for 1 bab (which your going to lose anyways) and a couple hps. (You could take improved toughness to make up for it if you wish).

For regular rogue, take the first one now, take the next one after (evasion is a life saver at low levels (well, any level but especially low)). Take a third if you wish later for the skill points and an extra sneak attack. The main reason to not take rogue levels is the loss of BAB, but after you take one, you are fine up to 4. (although I would probably stop at 2 or 3 with this variant).

After that go into a PRC (or get at MOST 2 more levels of fighter). What PRC depends on what fighting style you want. If you let me know I might be able to recommend some.

As to my fighting style, this being a totally new kind of character for me as I usually play a support character (rogue, monk, etc.) I haven't really found it. The feats I have selected as of level two are: Combat Expertise, Imporved Unarmed, Imporved Disarm, Improved Init. I have used the improved disarm to some use, as well as having the imporved init.

My preferred weapon is the Ransuer for it's bonus to disarming and it came in handy when we fought a tough half troll dwarf who I suspected was a blackguard and his minions. Being a city guard I try to take alot of opponents alive. The improved unarmed was for access to improved grapple to facilitate this and because unarmed combat has happened before and has a good chance of happening again.

As a combantant I think I'm cautious but not cowardly. I ran from the huge mob but stood my ground long enough to give their leader bloody nose. With the half troll I retreated to a more defensible position and had a barricade hastily built out of long tables and chairs so we only had to deal with at most 2 of his minions at once. I like reach weapons and using items like tanglefoot bags whenever possible and try to never fight without support. I'm also a big fan of non-lethal damage. I think my strength doesn't have to be just my BAB or my weapon.

Also I like the be mobile. Right now I have MWK Chain Shirt for armor and I think I want to keep my armor light.

PrCs I was thinking about were the Justicar or Reaping Mauler. But I'm leaning towards the Justicar and also not certain I don't just want to be a Fighter/Rogue emphasis on fighter.

I'd take that level of Rogue at 3rd level, and then spend that 3rd level feat to pick up Craven from Champions of Ruin. Craven gives you a damage bonus on sneak attacks equal to your character level. So right there, every time you flank you'll get an additional +1d6+3 damage.

Later on add on a level or two of Tactical Soldier from the MiniHB, granting you the Flanker ability.

I'd take a level of rogue at 3rd level and pick up Able Learner as your 3rd level feat (assuming that you're human).

Except you can only take able learner at 1st level.

@OP-I agree with some of the above that a feat rogue would be a good choice, but even if you don't do that, I would take rogue at third level. If I were you I wouldn't go back to fighter either, but that's just me.

Well under normal circumstances I'd agree with you about not going back to fighter. I myself usually do rogue and dip into fighter, but we already have a rogue and I am the parties main melee combatant.

I went ahead and leveled up as a normal rogue and am thinking about taking improved feint as my 3rd level feat. Is my understanding correct to assume that if my feint succeeds my next attack gets the sneak damage?

Otherwise I'll drop the sneak damage and use the feat rogue and get myself two extra feats for this level and alternate between fighter and rogue every 2 levels and end up gaining bonus feats with the same regularity of a fighter anyway
