| HunterKillerX3M04-13-06, 11:16 PM | Our DM started a campaign involving the faerun campaign and we will go to a lot of dangerous places, the Underdark being one of them. Now ive looked at the boards and did my own bersion but 3 buiolds later all of em have been nerfed one way or another :( so I would like help building an awsome ranged ranger we are 15th level and i am a poisondusk lizardfolk half dragon. my stats are 17 17 17 14 14 12 so theyre not bad I have a ECL of +4 and hes allowing me to redo my whole character after a long discussion that it wasnt fair to keep my build since he nerfed it. We are allowed to used all the faerun books and 3.5 books. Nothing below 3.5 though hes really nit picky bout rules =/ My concept is to use a big damage dealing weapon and i want no one to see where the shot came from, so i also wana be very stealthy and sneaky. we have 12th level gold though =/ hope that is enough info to help you help me ^___^ Thx in advance |
| King_Bulba04-13-06, 11:55 PM | How is that build not fair? If we understand that, then we know what to avoid. |
| HunterKillerX3M04-14-06, 02:15 AM | well i tried, Rgr5 rogue 5 weapon master 1... no go then i tried rgr 5 horizon walker 7 and no go, now i tried a different ranger 5 horizon walker 7 but with different feats and it seems like its not getting happy reviews from the DM hope this can help you guys help me |
| DavidWL04-14-06, 02:59 AM | *shrugs*. Druid 20 |
| PhoenixInferno04-14-06, 03:30 AM | Well, how are we supposed to help you make a good build that'll slide under your DM's nerf radar? |
| Oathar Nethuzeda04-14-06, 04:24 AM | How is your DM Nerfing you? Introducing houserules, giving everybody and their mom Deflect Arrows? That might help us figure something out. |
| X-Codes04-14-06, 04:28 AM | Half-Dragon and you want to use a bow? ... Throwing I can understand, but a bow? Also, yeah... unless you tell us whats getting nerfed/thrown out then we can't really help that well. |
| DavidWL04-14-06, 04:50 AM | well i tried, Rgr5 rogue 5 weapon master 1... no go then i tried rgr 5 horizon walker 7 and no go, now i tried a different ranger 5 horizon walker 7 but with different feats and it seems like its not getting happy reviews from the DM hope this can help you guys help me He did say what got nerfed ... Ranger 5/Horizon Walker 7 (with 2 different feat mixes) However, I do agree with everyone -- what about this build did your DM not like? |
| X-Codes04-14-06, 05:10 AM | Well, lets get some stuff straight... He wants to be a ranged buff despite being a half-dragon. Therefore, these are obvious: Power Attack Brutal Throw Power Throw TWF style from ranger levels gives... Two-Weapon Fighting More Archery feats that you need... Point Blank Shot Precise Shot Cap Ranger at 3 and pick up Fighter 2 for... Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Harpoon) Rapid Shot (You can pick Archery Ranger and drop Two-Weapon Fighting here... it doesn't really matter to me) If you get bonus feats from somewhere else, look for Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting and Quick Draw. Now then... main hand is whatever, off hand is Harpoon. Impale with Harpoon and keep them inside Point Blank Range with Harpoon while you pincushion them with your 4 main-hand attacks. If they remove the Harpoon you get to deal that much more damage with it, and their speed suffers while Harpooned as well. If your DM allows you to make it a Spell Storing Harpoon then keep a Ray of Enfeeblement in it or something. Thats Ranger 3/Fighter 2/XXX 7. Until I know what your DM doesn't like about Horizon Walker I'll wait to tell you what the XXX should be. |
| Pinky's brain04-14-06, 10:31 AM | He wants to be a sniper ... Id just go ranger 12. Get a splitting bow (CoR) and some of the nice arrows from RotW (increased crit multiplier). If you get the drop on your opponent cast hunter's mercy (SpC), then next round cast arrowsplit (CoR) using a lesser metamagic rod of maximize and attack with manyshot ... you fire either 2*(3+4) or 2*3+4 arrows depending on how you interpret the stacking rules, and your first attack will crit if it hits. Afterwards you still have a move action left to hide again. Unfortunately you don't have a lot of level 3 slots, you might want to get some pearls of power so you can pull the trick more times a day (even without it you still get 6 attacks on a manyshot). |
| HunterKillerX3M04-15-06, 07:11 PM | Thank you so much on the info i will look into it. ANd for the nerfs that Ive been getting are: ""this build doesnt make any sense, why would i allow you to play this?"" ""Horizon Walker is broken im not allowing it..."" ""your small and you want to do massive damage? i smell broken from a mile away. try something else"" and the list goes on and on =/ so any new insight would be greatly apreciated, plus, i really like that harpoon idea but i was thinking more of a sniper. and what did you mean by being a half dragon i should look into throwing? is thowing better? thx in advance everyone ^^ |
| PhoenixInferno04-15-06, 07:25 PM | ANd for the nerfs that Ive been getting are: ""this build doesnt make any sense, why would i allow you to play this?"" ""Horizon Walker is broken im not allowing it..."" ""your small and you want to do massive damage? i smell broken from a mile away. try something else"" and the list goes on and on =/Sounds to me like he's just being a control freak. Horizon Walker is FAR from broken. Does he want you to dress up too? Throwing is only better in that it allows you to use Master Thrower's Weak Spot ability + Power Attack+Brutal Throw->Power Throw to get big time PA damage. |
| X-Codes04-15-06, 07:30 PM | and what did you mean by being a half dragon i should look into throwing? is thowing better? thx in advance everyone ^^ Yes, it's better because theres a feat that lets you use your Strength mod to attacks. Not that your Dex mod will be bad, your Strength mod will be much much better. You also don't have to spend a small fortune on a mighty bow that nobody else will ever be able to use. |
| NineInchNall04-15-06, 07:36 PM | At this point is when I'd usually do something like core-only, straight Druid or Cleric, just to say to the DM, "There, you see? All of your ridiculously restrictions and irrational prejudices against character options have forced my hand." *shrug* If a DM were to restrict me that way, then that's exactly what I'd do. Natural Spell all the way. Normally I'd feel dirty about playing either of those two classes, seeing as how they're a little unbalanced, but in a situation where the DM is forbidding less powerful options on the most unreasoned grounds ... *sigh* |
| Khazra Reborn04-15-06, 07:39 PM | throwing is better for a half dragon because with brutal throw str is the stat you add to your hit bonus instead of dex and the half dragon gets+8 racial str but 0 dex. half dragon is a very odd choice for a bow user. |
