| Desyth04-18-06, 02:21 AM | I just found this prestige class in the Psionic Handbook, and WOW! So far the best use I can see for this thing is a monk that takes this PrC to lvl 5 for the Nimbus ability. Either use the Fist of Zouken or the Wild Talent Feat to meet the prereqs. Am I missing the obvious use for this? And what other classes could further benefit this PrC? |
| Riodrian04-18-06, 03:06 AM | It's not a bad PrC, but it is lacking overall since fire is one of the most common immunities/resistances around. |
| Desyth04-18-06, 03:51 AM | True, mainly though, this is for RP reasons. As it IS one of the most common damage types and immunities, would one tend to rely more on physical (ki) damage via the monk line? Or should another weapon be used? Basically, how would I minimize the problems with this PrC? |
| Xeraph04-18-06, 04:15 AM | Dont like fire? Check this out: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625e I like the Sonic the best. Lets me go Tetsuo Shima all day long. :D http://taro.lool.net/Akira/pics/anime/Kei_Tetsuo.jpg |
| Riodrian04-18-06, 04:16 AM | I find it pretty good for a monk, as long as you keep your monk abilities up with items like the monk's belt and/or monk tattoo. The ranged fire attack does a lot of damage and gives the monk a decent ranged weapon (and add's that video game/martial arts movie fireball..hehe). The extra damage on melee attacks are pretty nice too. There is a cold version in Frostburn as well, the cyrokineticist. I have seen a couple of builds around here before, but I don't know the location offhand. |
| Riodrian04-18-06, 04:17 AM | Doh...late by a minute! |
| hogarth04-18-06, 07:22 AM | It's not a bad PrC, but it is lacking overall since fire is one of the most common immunities/resistances around. Note that a successful use of the Heat Death ability is a death effect, not a fire effect; fire resistance only comes into play if the target makes his save. Unfortunately the DC is pretty low. Also note: monk = lawful, pyro = chaotic. |
| Todd04-18-06, 08:54 AM | Use the new Divine Mind base class from the Complete Psi as a prefix to Pyro ... if you take the Elements mantle the Divine Mind aura grants the ability for you and your nearby allies to ignore one type of ER with your attacks.... ;) :D |
| Xeraph04-18-06, 09:06 AM | Also, even if you take levels in the Chaos Monk (who are chaotic) you would still need way to many scores. The idea is cool and all, but if you want to really be a good Pyrokineticist, you should focus on Strength and Charisma. Also, the Fire Lash is not a bad weapon by it self. You can even TWF with it. Anyways, most people start out their Pyrokineticist careers with 2 levels of Rogue followed by 3 levels of Hexblade. This gives you mettle and evasion aswell as good skills and abiliites. Your Hexblade Curse will help you with your Heat Death DCs later on aswell. Heres how i would but it together: Rogue 2/ Hexblade 3/ Paladin (Anarch or Tytanny variants) 3/ Wilder 2/ Sonokineticist 10 If you arent allowed to use variants, take two levels of fighter instead of paladin and an extra rogue level. Some people like the combine the Lasher prestige class. They take 5 levels of Pyrokineticist and 5 levels of Lasher. You want bab +16 at 20th level istead of +15? Consider either dropping the Wilder levels or the Rogue levels. It depends, you want evasion skill points and some sneak attack? Or powers and charisma bonus to ac vs touch attacks? Tough call imo. Cheers. |
| cyberpunks04-18-06, 12:31 PM | Todd: Read that ability again. That's not what it does. Damage resistance, not energy resistance. It nullifies the damage resistance of elemental creatures which are aligned with you. |
| lostone04-19-06, 10:45 AM | Definitely go with the sonic version, very few, if any, critters are immune to it, and I remember seeing only a handful resistant to it. |
| Manus04-19-06, 12:14 PM | My favorite use of the pyrokineticist: Start with a psionic race like elan, kalashtar or psi-forged. A couple levels of fighter, and start getting whip-appropriate feats. When you have the prereqs done, take levels in the pyro prc and in the lasher prc (which regretably has not yet been updated to 3.5, but the 3.0 one still works). You end up with a fire whip wielding nasty. I like dual wielding with the fire lash in one hand, and a heavily enchanted whip-dagger in the other. Plus, firebolt is a nice backup. Ever notice that while warlock's eldritch blast can be modified by infusions, and isn't tied to one energy, firebolt increases in damage much faster, and caps out around the same damage potential. I have a fondness for character builds who can keep up the butt-whoopin even after losing all their gear and being thrown into jail. |
| SoulGamit04-19-06, 02:42 PM | Ranger 1 / Wilder 4 / Pyrokinetasist 10 / Slayer 5 16 bab, powers as an 8th level wilder. Wear a gauntlet and a monk's belt to take full advantage of the abilities. You can also turn yourself into a field control with your fire lash and improved trip. Of course, sonokinetasist is better then pyrokinetasist if allowed. |
