Can someone point me towards some effective creatures whose effigies won't cost a fortune?

Orogs are cheap.

Orog Warrior Effigy:
25 HP, 23 Strength, 13 AC before armor
3,000 gp, 80 xp

Give it a Greataxe (might as well make it Masterwork) and you have a nice little expendable soldier.

Of course, if you want to be just plain ornery you can throw all the templates you can think of on to a monster to boost it's strength into the stratosphere.

It appears that you're using the Warrior class in the statisitcs of the effigy. I think you should be able to do this, but there's a lot of disagreement with me on the boards. How do you deal with class levels, then (besides the HD being dropped)? Also, how does armor work with an effigy?

And thanks for the suggestion, but what book is the Orog in?

look at Mr Roboto in my sig. another really good abuse is the dusk giant from heroes of horror. it has an ability that is kept as an effigy that allows it to gain HD by eating dead. but all in all just take something anything that you can afford to build and add the paragon template several hundred times before adding the effigy template to it. its cheap and VERY broken.
