I want to play a warrior/mage combination of some sort but want to keep it fairly simple.

I was hoping to try the battle sorceror, but it was recommended a war Mage w levels of the Battle Caster.

Which would you guys recommend?

War mage is not the most optimal choice. But I like it. I played a Aeshkrau Illumian Warmage/Dragonslayer/Spellsword/Eldritch knight.

There is always the battlesorceror/eldritch knight/spellsword 1/dragonslayer1 To get PERFECT CL20 and a better BAB and HP than a pure battlesorc.

Look at the misc. handbooks for gishes

The simplest, most effective fighter/mage is still Bard 20 - it is comparable in effectiveness to most "gish" builds around. Alternately, a Dwarf Fighter/Wizard/Runesmith is always nice to have. You can do better if you want to get more complicated.

Warmage is a poor choice, because it only uses damage spells. A fighter/mage's strength is not in damage spells, but in buffs, utility spells, and other "cool stuff".

Before creating a fighter/mage, it is critical to determine what you want to be able to do. If you want someone who is basically a spellcaster in heavy armor, you are looking for a different character than if you want to play a warrior who enhances his prowess with magic.
