| CrazyCloud10-01-06, 02:34 PM | In my campaign, we are having trouble with a ghost that is haunting us. Every time it dies, it reforms and goes after us again. Is there any way to stop this without fulfilling its desire to stay on earth (which incidentally is to be the strongest)? PS: Does Smite Damage get multiplied on a Spirited Charge? If so, how do you prove that? |
| Drill_Sgt10-01-06, 03:03 PM | No smite damage does not. Now dealing with the ghost... hrm, alot of ways but it depends on what lvl you guys are. There's a spell in (i believe it's) spell conpendium that will turn a ghost into a solid form, then just jump him and drag his dead butt to jail or somethin. If you have a lvl 7 cleric, and your dm allows you to access the material in the book of exalted deeds, you can have your cleric cast 'celestial brilliance' on an object, say a ring. The ring generates light to a 60ft radius, and shadowly illumination another 60 beyond that. undead in the 60ft of bright, take 1d6 dmg every round no save, evil outsides take 2d6. SO... have him make one for every party member (4 lets say). that ghost takes 4d6 dmg every round he comes close to you guys... you dont even have to do anything. Dependsing how much cash you have, you can go by a high lvl scroll to take care of him, like like say imprisonment (3825gp) and trap his butt in the centre of the earth. |
| GaffeR10-01-06, 05:38 PM | PS: Does Smite Damage get multiplied on a Spirited Charge? If so, how do you prove that? I believe so, yes. When mounted and using the charge action, you deal double damage with a melee weapon (or triple damage with a lance). Just as non-variable damage (like power attack, weapon enchantments, etc) get multiplied on a critical hit, so too does Smite damage on a spirited charge (in addition to power attack, enchantment bonuses, str, etc). You use smite to boost the damage dealt by your melee weapon. SC doubles/triples the damage dealt by your melee weapon. Ergo, SC doubles/triples the damage dealt by smite. A charging smiting Paladin is a thing to be feared. However, you may want to ask CustServ, as I couldn't find anything about this in the FAQ. I'm not sure where Drill_Sgt is getting his opinion from. I'm simply arguing from my interpretation of the rules as written. As far as your Ghost problem goes, here's what the SRD has to say: As a rule, the only way to get rid of a ghost for sure is to determine the reason for its existence and set right whatever prevents it from resting in peace. The exact means varies with each spirit and may require a good deal of research. Looks like you're stuck on a quest to lay the spirit to rest. Either that, or use one of the above methods. It looks like somehow trapping it is gonna be the only method. Call the Ghostbusters. |
| PhaedrusXY10-01-06, 05:50 PM | Call the Ghostbusters.And whatever you do, DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS! |
| Prominence10-01-06, 05:52 PM | Ghostwalker campaign setting book might have something to get rid of it. |
| Pinky's brain10-01-06, 06:01 PM | Trap the Soul and Imprisonment work. Id say a Thinaun weapon would work too (cheapest option). |
| Dragon310-01-06, 06:59 PM | Actually there's a prestige class with an ability called True Death. I forgot the name of the class but the class ability can deal true death to any undead that was destroyed in melee or by spells. |

| ThePrivateer10-02-06, 01:15 AM | I'm also of the opinion Smite is multiplied. It's a base damage addition, not something like Sneak Attack -- and if Smite is multiplied on a crit, which I believe it is, it's reasonable that it would multiply on a charge. I can't point you to a specific rules location, though. :P |
| runestar10-02-06, 03:40 AM | Aye, I too believe smite damage is multiplied as well, just like bonus damage from power attack, since the damage is not a variable.:) Could you make some crazy diplomacy check to convince it that it already is the strongest?:P |
| ChristopherGroves10-02-06, 11:17 AM | Define "strongest". Seriously. If your DM has inflicted this on you there is likely a catch there where you can get rid of it RP-wise. Can kill everyone? Can lift big heavy things? Is the best fighter? All have different RP solutions. |
| Dirty Dan the Laundry Man10-02-06, 11:34 AM | Most ghosts I've faced over the years (in 3.0 or 3.5 play), have been most efficiently dealt with *OUTSIDE* of combat. Meaning diplomacy/bluff via parlay, Bard Lore knowledge, divination spell information, etc. - have all been key in providing my party information on how to best deal with the ghost's raison d'etre. Do not underestimate the crafty use of bluff and diplomacy skills in finding ways to deal with what's bothering the ghost. Usually, they don't want to fight. They just want conditions met to send their soul to their final destination. Which is much more preferable to deal with than a potentially constant recurring foe. |
| CrazyCloud10-03-06, 04:39 PM | Surprisingly enough, it's actually a PC. Since it seems to make a difference, I thought I would point that out. |
| Llochlyn10-03-06, 04:44 PM | You definitely need ranks in Craft (pottery). Ranked Mature ! |
| ChristopherGroves10-03-06, 04:59 PM | If it's a PC then there's no way I think we can really help. There's obviously some sort of DM/PC thing going on to allow it and even if you had a magic rod of ghost-de-ghosting it probably wouldn't fly. |

| Aegeu10-03-06, 05:23 PM | Capturing it or finding out how to pacify it is your only option. The SRD says "a ghost that would otherwise be destroyed returns to its old haunts with a sucessful level check vs. DC 16" No way around this, not even true death. |
