| Kenkai01-18-04, 05:42 PM | my favored soul is a divine archer. Since i have greater magic weapon i'm going to put only special abilities and a +1 enhancement on his longbow. So my question is, what kind of special abilities are most useful to him? note: by level 15 he'll be casting quickened true strikes combined with manyshot (my DM house ruled that spontaneous casters can use quicken spell). i figured the best ones would be the ones that apply to each arrow, so flaming, frost, shock are probably good but what else? thanks! :) |
| Kenkai01-18-04, 07:04 PM | well i guess nobody as access to the DMG or any other source with weapon special abilities. i can use almost any book. savage species, RoF, MoF, FRCS, the Underdark, Draconomicon, BoED, BoVD, Manual of the planes, Miniatures handbook, Oriental adventures, fiend folio, arms and equipment, etc. thanks! |
| Kenkai01-18-04, 08:50 PM | nobody has --any-- ideas? i feel so alone  |
| newblar3201-18-04, 09:10 PM | The best bow in my opinion is.. Bow of the Solars (BoED) then talk your DM into adding exit wounds (CW) and seeking (DMG) and whatever else you fancy onto it. |
| Mandemon01-18-04, 09:39 PM | Bane, *Distance, Ghost Touch, *Holy, Keen, *Knockback (from Miniatures Handbook or Complete Warrior), Merciful, *Seeking (DMG), Spell Storing (if you can use it to target two spells at once), *Summoning (see Beads of the Construct in The Mind's Eye psionics column), specific spell effect like Melf's Acid Arrow , Wounding |
| Kenkai01-18-04, 09:39 PM | thanks for the idea. *looks up bow of the solars* any other suggestions? |
| Nifft01-18-04, 09:47 PM | HOLY! One PC in the game that I DM put this on his composite longbow, and it's really changed the party's outlook towards demons & the undead. A couple of Banes would be nice -- Undead & Outsiders (Evil). That's an extra +4d6 vs. your most hated foes. Keen is good except against Undead. Seeking is a must, since there are so many ways to generate concealment using magic (or just darkness). Flaming, Shock, etc. are okay, but most big bads will resist 10 points of some kind of energy damage. My advice is to get some kind of Burst -- Acid is good vs. everyone evil except Yugoloths -- and look for some sort of crit multiplier enhancement. -- N |
| Kenkai01-18-04, 09:47 PM | hmm whats a slaying arrow? also can i change the creature type every time i shoot? the cost to create is weird. thats the price to make a bow of the solars, so its automatically a +2 composite longbow including that price? thats neat :D |

| Boondoggle01-18-04, 10:02 PM | My suggestions: Holy, Exit Wound, Seeking, Knockback, Speed. |
| Kenkai01-19-04, 12:58 AM | can someone please answer my bow of the solar's question? |
| foxylady01-19-04, 03:42 AM | Smoking, +1 enchantment. It grants a concealment bonus that doesn't affect you. Ideal for ranged combat. It's from one of the FR supplements. |
| PhaedrusXY01-19-04, 03:55 AM | Originally posted by Kenkai hmm whats a slaying arrow? also can i change the creature type every time i shoot? the cost to create is weird. thats the price to make a bow of the solars, so its automatically a +2 composite longbow including that price? thats neat :D 1) Look up Slaying Arrows in the DMG or SRD. 2) Yes 3) Yes. And for the "best" enchantment, my vote is Holy. I don't know the ones out of the non-core books that well, though. But Holy is incredible if you play in a typical game where the PCs are the good guys and most of the people you fight are evil. Edit: Also, if you play with 3.5 rules, see if your DM will let you have a +1 enhancement that allows the bow's draw strength to match your own. That way you don't have to worry about having different bows to use depending on whether you have Divine Power, Bull's Strength, etc, on you. Or replacing your bow if your strength goes up. From a min/max point of view, I hate the fact that if you use a bow with a draw strength too high for you, you get a penalty to attacks. But from a roleplaying point of view it makes perfect sense. |
| Inkubus01-19-04, 04:38 AM | FIERCE! Dex bonus to damage is awesome! |
| Kenkai01-19-04, 12:07 PM | where is fierce from? i assume its a special ability hehe. slaying arrows are in the SRD? *goes and looks* thanks! |
| mean_liar01-19-04, 01:57 PM | +1 Holy Seeking Fierce ExitWound Corrosive Wounding |
| Kenkai01-19-04, 02:03 PM | where are corrosive and fierce from? |
| Nifft01-19-04, 04:01 PM | Corrosive is in many sources -- Magic of Faerun at least. It's just like Shocking, but with [Acid] damage. Again, I recommend a Burst instead of a plain energy damage weapon, as many things have resistance in the 5 and 10 range. Keen seems to NOT be a Bow enhancement, so I'd take Distance instead. -- N |
| Kenkai01-19-04, 08:13 PM | i wouldn't want burst just because i only crit on a 20. |
| Varkas01-19-04, 08:21 PM | I know its been said before but a simple holy + Seeking very useful. Add in the feat Improved Precise shot and nothing will stop your holy bolts of doom |
| Nifft01-19-04, 09:37 PM | Originally posted by Kenkai i wouldn't want burst just because i only crit on a 20. Take "Improved Crit" and get Keen put on your arrows. -- N |
| Kenkai01-19-04, 10:13 PM | keen doesn't stack with improved critical. i'd rather have 2d6 bonus elemental damage then get +2d10 every 10 attacks. not everything has resistance. |
| newblar3201-19-04, 10:44 PM | fierce is just WRONG on a bow, so very wrong.... |
| Boondoggle01-19-04, 10:54 PM | Nifft, burst enhancements are 100% inferior to either a regular +1 or more elemental damage. |
| Kenkai01-20-04, 01:50 AM | WHERE IS FIERCE FROM!? and where do they talk about slaying arrows in the DMG? what page? |
| PhaedrusXY01-20-04, 01:55 AM | Originally posted by Kenkai WHERE IS FIERCE FROM!? and where do they talk about slaying arrows in the DMG? what page? From the SRD, Magic Items 2 section: Slaying Arrow: This +1 arrow is keyed to a particular type or subtype of creature. If it strikes such a creature, the target must make a DC 20 Fortitude save or die (or, in the case of unliving targets, be destroyed) instantly. Note that even creatures normally exempt from Fortitude saves (undead and constructs) are subject to this attack. When keyed to a living creature, this is a death effect (and thus death ward protects a target). To determine the type or subtype of creature the arrow is keyed to, roll on the table below. A greater slaying arrow functions just like a normal slaying arrow, but the DC to avoid the death effect is 23. Strong necromancy; CL 13th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, finger of death (slaying arrow) or heightened finger of death (greater slaying arrow); Price 2,282 gp (slaying arrow) or 4,057 gp (greater slaying arrow); Cost 1,144 gp 5 sp + 91 XP (slaying arrow) or 2,032 gp + 162 XP (greater slaying arrow). Then there is a big table with all the different types. Learn to find stuff on your own please... we're not encyclopedias. |

For example: Where the heck is Fierce from? It's not in the SRD Magic weapon section, that's for sure. :twitch: |
| Funny Slaughter01-20-04, 07:56 AM | taking a look at the SRD is quite easy, just use the search-function of your office-program if you use the rtf. if its not in there you can probably find it at crystalkeep, nearly everthing is listed there. again ctrl+f is your friend because these pdf-files are completely indexed. gs Funny |

| Kenkai01-20-04, 03:35 PM | thanks for the help! :) yes fierce is a cool ability. i also like precise just to save a feat :) |
| catharz01-20-04, 06:17 PM | Actually, the best set of bow abilities is Throwing Returning Valorous Cleaving. |
| Kenkai01-20-04, 06:36 PM | i'm gonna kick you catharz ;) |
