Which creatures give the biggest bang for the HD when turned into zombies or skeletons?

Or, if this has been covered before, could you reference me to the appropriate thread?

The "Death Priest and Animate Dead" thread is your best bet. You can find a link to it in the Optimization Library, which can be found via the FAQ. For a 10th level character, here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7194232&postcount=12) is a post of mine that has some decent ones.

Edit: here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=140914) is a direct link to the Death Priest thread. The newer stuff is at the end, but all of it is good.

If you don't happen upon good creatures to use raise dead on during an adventure, then why not create some of your own? Right now I am playing a dread necromancer and what I can do with planar binding is scaring my dm.

Just take a look at the Devil and Demon entries in the monster manual. With planar binding you can summon most of those into the perfect trap, slaughter them, and then raise them under your control with animate dead. There are some nasty nasty creatures such as a 12HD glabrezu with 31 strength and 5 natural attacks which makes for one hard hitting skeletal minion, ouch!

Even lesser planar binding has some good 6hd outsiders to call like
Bralani with 18 str and dex or howler with 21 str 17 dex

Now, why if the previous 2 planar binding are on the dread necro's spell list the greater version isn't?
