Better than retraining feats, at the cost of your soul. [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-21-06, 12:01 AM Looking through the Fiendish Codex, I ran across the Embrace/Shun The Dark Chaos spells. This pair struck me as useful for certain builds that meet feat prereqs at awkward levels. In particular, I'm thinking of builds that reach BAB +18 at Lv. 20, preventing them from taking a crunchy PHB II feat.

Embrace the Dark Chaos lets the subject lose one feat to gain an Abyssal heritor feat for which they qualify, all for the cost of an 8th level spell slot and 250xp. Shun the Dark Chaos is pretty much the opposite of Embrace the Dark Chaos in that it lets the subject swap one of their Abyssal Heritor feats for any other feat (except another Abyssal feat) for which they qualify. So if you have some empty feat slots in your build that you'd like to save for later, just fill them with Abyssal heritor feats. When you reach a level where you can qualify for your target feat, get your spellcasting buddy to burn 250xp per and enable the swap. Have old feats you don't want anymore but can't wait for a level to retrain? Just trade them in for some Abyssal nastiness and reswap to the ones you want. No need to wait for a level or anything.

Oh, and the Page 16 Rule is reiterated in the spell descriptions, so just be careful not to disqualify yourself from feat chains/PRCs.

Seriously, though, these are SPELLS? That beats the Reforged trick all to tatters.

By the way: whyn ot just get a cohort to cast these on you? ;)

07-21-06, 06:37 PM Indeed. Don't cohorts at their level cap have 1 less xp than they need to gain a level? Might as well put that extra xp to use.

07-23-06, 02:56 PM Hrm... so a Warlock magic item smith has just become more interesting, removing the need for chameleon levels to swap out item creation feats? Start with Wand making, make wands with those spells, and go to town... abyssal feats fit the flavor of warlock too. An awsome alternative for people without access to eberron feats who'd still like to make all the parties items with one feat choice.
