| Otto the Bugbear12-06-05, 07:31 AM | I was fooling around making a party the other day, when I decided I needed to go buy Heroes of Horror. Of course, I remember all the talk about the Archivist and the Dread Necromancer, but I didn't see much about the PrCs presented therein. I started looking them over, and overall, they seem fine. Not over the top, not sub-par. Then it struck me. Why no talk about the fiend-blooded? Here we have a sorcerer PrC that adds to the sorcerer's spells known. Granted, it's not a lot, but for the cost of 1 meh (Eschew Materials) feat, and one that's useful but limited (Blood calls to blood), it's better than a kick in the face with a golf shoe. I went with the PrC, and went with a concept as well, so there may be areas that could use improvement. Overall, I like it a lot. Here's what I came up with. Strongheart Halfling S: 10, D: 14, C: 14, I: 14, W: 10, C: 16 Sorcerer 6 / Fiendblooded 2 / Fatespinner 2 / Fiendblooded 7 / Fatespinner +1 / Fiendblooded +1 / Fatespinner +1 Feats: Eschew Materials (1), Able Learner (1), Blood Calls to Blood (3), Spell Focus: Necromancy (6), Black Lore of Moil (9), Spell Penetration (12), Transdimansional Spell (15), Twin Spell (18) Spell list: spells in [] from fiend-blooded 0 - prestidigitation, detect magic, read magic, detect poison, ghost sound, mending, mage hand, open/close, dancing lights 1 - sleep (switch to magic missile at 4th level), true strike (switch to identify at 6th level), silent image, enlarge person, protection from evil 2 - scorching ray, alter self, rope trick, protection from arrows, detect thoughts 3 - haste, spell vulnerability, clairaudience/clairvoyance, explosive runes, suggestion 4 - shadow conjuration, dimension door, otiluke's dispelling screen, charm monster, [burning blood] 5 - shadow evocation, draconic polmorph, magic jar, spiritwall 6 - contingency, mislead, eyebite, greater dispelling, [harm] 7 - sword of darkness, control undead, limited wish, [greater shadow conjuration] 8 - mind blank, greater prying eyes, horrid wilting, [greater shadow evocation] 9 - shapechange, timestop, gate, [shades] Basically, this character gets an extra spell known at 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th. While that's not overwhelming by itself, it certainly helps the sorcerer out a bit. Then, tack on the fact that he can take 5 non-wiz/sorc spells (harm, slay living, destruction, song of discord, sympathetic vibration, modify memory, etc.) and it comes out even better. Granted, my choices only involve a single non-sorc spell, but there may be better ideas out there. There's just something about nasty halflings that creeps me out. I guess it's just that fantasy stereotype, but having one that dabbles in the things shown above feels against the grain. Oh, fatespinner was added just for the 'I'll not succumb to my fiendish ancestors ways' thought. I just thought it fit, considering the names fo the abilities it gains - 'deny fate' etc. Edit: I updated the classes to the proper order. I also changed the feats around. Dropped the Draconic feats and went with the suggested Black Lore of Moil instead. Without Libris Mortis, I can't put the suggested necropolitan and tomb tainted soul in there. Levels 12, 15, and 18 could be switched around, so if you've got a great idea, post it! I'm also open to more ideas for spells, especially for the bonus spells. No vile/corrupt spells, but anything else should be ok. Cheers Otto :) |
| Nifft12-06-05, 08:49 AM | Drop Draconic Breath -- you don't need it after level 9, though it's fantastic from levels 1-6. Fiendblooded looks very interesting -- did you consier the synergy of Necropolitan or Tomb-Tainted Soul along with your acquisition of Harm? Frankly I think taking Extra Spell three times is usually a better deal than taking Draconic Legacy (and its four pre-reqs), unless you really want Draconic Breath at 1st level, when it, shall we say, pwnz. Why Silver? You really want Disguise or something? Anyway -- Draconic feats can be useful, but that's in place of something like Fiendblooded. I'd go with your Fiend-theme and drop the half-hearted Draconic stuff. You should take: Black Lore of Moil, Tomb-Tainted Soul (thus, your own False Life spell can heal you until you get Harm). You should consider: Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Circle vs. Evil, (Greater/Lesser) Planar Binding -- ride the Nightmare! Cheers, -- N |
| Spellbinded12-06-05, 09:27 AM | I personally would think that Mr. Bugbear took the Draconic Breath as he was aiming for Draconic Legacy, which, as you said, requires 4 prerequisite feats. He could just take 3 extra spells and have a greater selection of it - but I think that what the Draconic Feats are offering add a bit more versatility then that. He gets three spells, some (if I remember correctly; don't have time to go fishing through my PHB) at lower levels then they'd be otherwise. In addition, he also gains a skill of his choice, the ability to sack spell slots for a breath weapon if necessary, some natural armor, and a limited frightful presence ability. It costs him one more feat, sure, and lessens the choices he makes regarding the bonus spells he gets, but all in all I say it's a better deal. Though you're right...I personally would take another dragon type then silver. |
| Korg al Tarr12-06-05, 01:20 PM | Sorcerer 6 / Fatespinner 2 / Fiendblooded 9 / Fatespinner +1 / Fiendblooded +1 / Fatespinner +1 (bold mine) You need 10 ranks of k.arcana and 4 lv spells for Fatespinner. |
| Zemyla12-06-05, 06:23 PM | And you need 8 ranks of Know (the planes) for fiend-blooded, which you can't get as a sorcerer. |
| Otto the Bugbear12-06-05, 06:27 PM | Hey guys, thanks for the input. Drop Draconic Breath -- you don't need it after level 9, though it's fantastic from levels 1-6. You should consider: Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Circle vs. Evil, (Greater/Lesser) Planar Binding -- ride the Nightmare! Actually, the whole thing with the draconic feats was from a post that Radical Taoist did about taking 20 levels of sorcerer. I didn't really put much thought into the feats before posting this. I switched one of the draconic feats, but that's as far as I got. You all are right. It's almost better to just take Extra Spell 3 times than the draconic feats. I did consider Necropolitan or Tomb-Tainted Soul for about as far as I can. Ya see, I don't have that book (books?). That means I can only rely on what others tell me they do. Which also means I'm unlikely to include them very often. Libris Mortis is high on my list of books to get, so hopefully I'll do that soon. I did strongly consider Black Lore of Moil, but, as I said, I didn't really get that far into the build. I'll take a look and likely update the first post to include it. Though you're right...I personally would take another dragon type then silver. I'd think that Red or Black would be more fitting for this guy. Though there is a case to be made for green as well. After all, Poison qualifies to be taken as a Fiend-Blooded bonus spell. Sorcerer 6 / Fatespinner 2 / Fiendblooded 9 / Fatespinner +1 / Fiendblooded +1 / Fatespinner +1 (bold mine) You need 10 ranks of k.arcana and 4 lv spells for Copied it wrong. It should have read Sorc 6 / Fiend-Blooded 2 / Fatespinner 2 / Fiendblooded +7 / Fatespinner +1 / Fiendblooded +1 / Fatespinner +1 I did that to maximize the spell level for the bonus spells. As you can see, I ended up with a bonus 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell. That works out to needing 2 levels of fatespinner to interrupt fiendblooded. This delays the second bonus spell known to 12th level, thus allowing an extra 6th level spell known right as the character is gaining access to 6th level spells. *grumblegrumble*stupidbugbear*grumblegru mble* Cheers Otto :D |
| Otto the Bugbear12-06-05, 06:47 PM | And you need 8 ranks of Know (the planes) for fiend-blooded, which you can't get as a sorcerer. Wow, another retarded requirement put forth by WotC. "Here, have a sorcerer PrC, which you cannot qualify for as early as you think you can. To ease the pain, we'll make it easy for bards to get into." " Sigh. I guess that's another feat to take then. edit: actually, it's not a bad PrC for bards at all. It allows the bard to add some rather nasty spells to his spells known. If only there were another PrC out there that allowed bards to access all sorc/wiz spells... *coughsublimechordcough* Now that I consider it, why not take 2 levels of sublime chord then a bunch of fiendblooded for stuff like Harm, Poison, Destruction etc.? Now that's an idea! Cheers Otto :) |
| Zemyla12-06-05, 09:43 PM | It looks like it was placed in late, as the flavor text makes no mention of it. I expect to see it errataed to 4 ranks, and that's what I would do in my campaign. |
| PhaedrusXY12-06-05, 10:15 PM | I want to see someone make the "8-armed blood-vomiting Death God of Babylon" build. :dancin: |
| Nifft12-06-05, 10:41 PM | IMPORTANT NOTE: You can't take Able Learner unless you're Human. So, no creepy Halfling, unless you use alter self to fake it. Mindbender to the rescue! All knowlegdge skills are on his class list, and you only need 4 ranks of Bluff, Diplomacy, Sense Motive & Intimidate to get in. (Oh, and charm person on your spell list, and a caster level of 5... not a problem.) Take one level of that for your 6th level, all the relevant skills become as good as class skills forever (thanks to Able Learner), and you get all the social skills too. Do you really need Eschew Materials at 1st level? (Is it a pre-req?) It's not a bad feat... but component-pouch theft does not figure into all campaigns. Thus: 1: Sorc 1 -- Able Learner, Eschew Materials -- Ray of Enfeeblement, Charm Person 2: Sorc 2 3: Sorc 3 -- Blood Calls to Blood -- Magic Missile 4: Sorc 4 -- Alter Self 5: Sorc 5 -- Protection from Evil, Scorching Ray 6: Mindbender 1 -- Spell Focus (Necromancy) -- Ray of Exhaustion 7: Fiendblooded .... (etc.) Cheers, -- N |

(etc.) Cheers, -- N Ah, I don't have RoD, so I couldn't look up Able Learner. And of course the FR regional feat has no halflings mentioned. That's major suckage. I guess human it is then. :( Eschew Materials and Blood calls to Blood are requirement feats. Good catch on the mindbender! With the abilities laid out the way I have them, the requesite skills are no big deal. Actually, if I have to switch to human, mindbender isn't really needed. That's is to say, not needed, but used anyway! Telepathy is always a good thing, plus a boost to fort saves. I'm just not sold on ray of enfeeblement. By the time I get Black Lore of Moil, I won't be using too many 1st level spells for direct offense. Having that plus magic missile is a bit of overkill, IMO. Plus, usually the things I'd want to use enfeeblement on have a good fort save. I'll still consider it, but I'm leaning toward no right now. Thanks for the input. Cheers Otto :) |
| Nifft12-07-05, 07:41 AM | Ray of Enfeeblement Necromancy Level: Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Effect: Ray Duration: 1 min./level Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: Yes A coruscating ray springs from your hand. You must succeed on a ranged touch attack to strike a target. The subject takes a penalty to Strength equal to 1d6+1 per two caster levels (maximum 1d6+5). The subject’s Strength score cannot drop below 1. Cheers, -- N |
| Otto the Bugbear12-07-05, 06:25 PM | HEH! Shows how much I play caster, eh? Cheers Otto :embarrass |
| Tleilaxu_Ghola12-08-05, 11:35 AM | Just a side note, I see on your spell list that you have harm. If you had tomb-tainted soul then you could turn that frown upside down and heal yourself with it. :) Anyways, it'd be nice, but your feats do look a bit tight. If I had to pick I would drop transdimensional spell, unless you have big plans for that feat. |
