Black Ethergaunt as Gish? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-16-06, 04:55 PM A Black Ethergaunt has 16 character levels. He has a BAB of 12. He has four more levels before the Epic Attack Bonus kicks in. He has dex +8, which helps out tremendously for two weapon fighting.

So. Would a Black Ethergaunt make a decent epic gish? What four levels would you take to get that 16 BAB?

06-16-06, 05:13 PM I somehow thought Black Ethergaunts had a higher ECL than that (shrugs). If I remember right, they have a disgustingly high Int, so I would take three levels of Swashbuckler for the extra damage.

06-16-06, 05:17 PM They have a higher ECL (20? 21?), but they have a lot of racial hit dice; the character would be epic, but the Epic Attack Bonus wouldn't have kicked in.

Swashbuckler3/Spellsword 1 is my answer.

Does anyone have FF on them? i was just wondering if anyone would be able to say whether ethergaunts casting is based on racial HD or any HD?

HD + LA = ECL.

They have 17th level wizard casting. So, who knows?

Yes, but the epic bonus doesn't kick in until the actual HD are at 20. From ELH p25:

Regardless of its ECL, a monster with class levels uses the base attack bonus and base save bonuses of its class (rather than the progression shown on table 1-1) until it has 20 character levels. Beginning with its 21st character level, it uses the progression shown on table 1-1.

Did they actually change that for 3.5?

the others dont make much sense immediately either. red = 5hd, La 7, 9th level wizard; white = 11hd, +5 LA, 13th level casting.

huh - they're casting as a wizard 3 lower than the ECL. wierd.

There have been three or four different interpretations and changes to the Epic rules with regards to epic attack/save bonuses since 3.5 from what I recall. The version in the Epic Level Handbook still makes the most sense though. *shrug* (Particularly when you try to factor in the rules regarding racial hit dice that gain BAB normally and combining those with class levels, something that isn't really explained well.)

They are not naturally proficient with martial weapons though, regardless, so they're not eligible for Eldritch Knight.
